Background & History

Chu Muyun first appears at Chen Ling’s home as an unfamiliar visitor carrying a letter. Han Meng immediately recognizes him as Aurora City’s “miracle doctor,” establishing that he has a prior reputation and history with the Enforcers. 19

He later waits from morning until sunset to examine Chen Ling, but Chen refuses treatment. Unable to leave the sealed Third District, Chu is allowed to stay in the Chen household after agreeing not to examine either Chen Ling or Chen Yan without permission. He explains that Han Meng respects him because he saved the officer’s life twice. 22

While maintaining the image of a mild, scholarly doctor, Chu secretly collects Chen Ling’s hair and skin flakes, then contacts the Dusk Society using the Seven of Spades card and its coded passphrase. 24 His Calamity-level assessment confirms that Chen Ling is connected to a World-Ending-class Calamity; despite briefly considering whether killing Chen Ling could release it, Chu assigns him an S+ rating as an “extremely dangerous” recruitment prospect. 25 26

Chu’s interest in Chen Ling is not purely medical. When Wu Youdong destabilizes Chen Ling by questioning the reality of Chen Yan, Chu murders Wu with a chair, calling Chen’s fragile balance between sanity and madness exceptionally valuable research material. 32 He later observes Chen Ling’s massacre at Ma Zhong’s estate, recognizes the strategic value of a World-Ending-class Fusionist walking a twisted God Path, and identifies the Red King as the figure who may recruit him. 36 41

After Chen Ling awakens, Chu openly reveals that his miracle-doctor identity was fabricated for infiltration and that he belongs to the Dusk Society. He offers Chen access to the Society’s resources and eventually recruits him as Red Heart 6 after explaining the Society’s objective of restarting the world from the Great Cataclysm. 43 48

Appearance

Chu Muyun presents himself as a refined, educated doctor whose calm manner sharply contrasts with his capacity for violence. Chen Ling notes that his dress and demeanor resemble those of an Aurora City intellectual rather than anyone from the poorer districts. 22

Beneath this civility, Chu is calculating, obsessive, and willing to commit extreme violence for research or the Dusk Society’s goals. He monitors Chen Ling without consent, considers the possibility of releasing a World-Ending Calamity, attempts to kill Chen in the Theater, and brutally murders Wu when Chen’s mental state is endangered. 24 26 29 32

He views abnormal people as valuable “outliers” rather than merely threats. This pragmatism shapes his interest in Chen Ling: although Chu recognizes Chen as extraordinarily dangerous, he continues pursuing his recruitment rather than reporting him to the Human Domains. 26 41 43
