Background

Chen Yan was the biological younger son of Chen Tan and Li Xiuchun, while Chen Ling was adopted. Despite being considered academically weak, socially awkward, and prone to stammering, Chen Yan trusted and admired his older brother without reservation from childhood onward. Chen Ling’s inherited memories describe him as one of the original Chen Ling’s greatest sources of pride. 12 15

Eight years before the events of the story, Chen Yan watched a poorly attended traveling-opera performance with Chen Ling. He became captivated by theater, then taught himself singing, script-copying, costume-making, and needlework. He sewed the bright red opera robe later associated with Chen Ling, leaving a small blue flower stitched into its hem. 14

At fifteen, Chen Yan was taken to an illegal operating room under the belief that he would receive treatment for his illness. After learning that Chen Ling’s heart was supposedly being taken for him, he tried to stop the operation and refused to accept his brother’s sacrifice. Bone Knife sedated him and revealed that he was not intended to receive the heart; he was instead murdered in an organ-harvesting operation and buried anonymously at Mass Grave. 33

When seen by Chen Ling, Chen Yan appears as a slight, youthful boy, often dressed in a bright red opera robe of his own making.

Personality

Chen Yan is gentle, loyal, and intensely devoted to Chen Ling. He does not fear Chen Ling after witnessing his monstrous transformation; instead, he judges him by whether he remains himself. When he believes Chen Ling has killed Han Meng, his first instinct is to help conceal the body rather than abandon his brother. 12 13

He is also compassionate and morally resolute. Upon overhearing that Chen Ling’s heart would be used to save him, Chen Yan attempts to stop the surgery and refuses to accept a life bought with his brother’s death. 33

His harmless, obedient demeanor conceals unsettling hints of violence and secrecy. He admits responsibility for the Ice Spring Street massacre while claiming incomplete memory, appears with a bloodstained Bone-Slicing Knife while watching over Chen Ling, and has secretly amassed Theater God Path fragments. Later revelations leave the exact nature of his actions and existence uncertain. 24 30 34 40

Chen Ling’s Apparent Younger Brother

He remains at Chen Ling’s side through the aftermath of the Calamity attack: accepting Chen Ling’s monstrous state, repairing their ruined home, practicing opera, and celebrating Chen Ling’s acceptance as an Enforcer. His presence is gradually questioned when others overlook him and physical evidence contradicts Chen Ling’s memories. 13 17 29 31 34

Massacre and Death Revelation

Chen Yan admits to the Ice Spring Street massacre but cannot remember how he arrived there. Chen Ling later experiences memories showing that Chen Yan was killed in the black-market operation and buried at Mass Grave.
