History
Origins and founding era
Ren identifies the Uchiha as descendants of Indra Ōtsutsuki, eldest son of Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths. Indra inherited the “Sage Eye,” which became the basis of the Sharingan, while the Senju descended from Indra’s brother Asura and inherited the “Sage Body.” 29 35 214
The Uchiha and Senju fought for centuries before jointly founding Konohagakure. Following Madara Uchiha’s departure, the clan weakened the clan head’s authority to prevent another individual leader from dominating the family; major decisions became subject to the Elders Council and clan assembly. 4 121
The clansmen who declined to follow Madara out of Konoha had grown weary of the Warring States Era’s losses and wanted their children to grow up outside its cycle of war. Madara regarded their choice as a betrayal. 263
Ren later explains that the conflict originated in Indra and Asura’s differing ideals over the inheritance of Ninshū. Their chakra continued reincarnating among their descendants, with Madara and Hashirama identified as the preceding pair of reincarnations. He also traces the Uchiha, Senju, and Hyuga to the wider Ōtsutsuki lineage, with the Hyuga descending from Hagoromo’s brother Hamura. 215 220 230
Suppression and internal crisis
After the Nine-Tails’ Attack, the Uchiha were relocated to Konoha’s outskirts, subjected to surveillance, politically excluded, and made increasingly unpopular through their control of the Military Police Force. The village leadership withheld nearly thirty percent of the police budget and denied the clan lucrative high-level missions. 2 29 162
These conditions divided the clan between radicals advocating a coup, conservatives fearing annihilation, and moderates seeking survival. Yashiro and Inabi prepared weapons and explosive tags, while Ren argued that an uprising would be militarily and politically suicidal—and would give Danzō the pretext to destroy the clan. 1 9
Ren’s rise
Ren built prestige during the Third Shinobi World War by serving as a medic and saving numerous Uchiha. His reputation became legendary after he used Lightning Release: Kirin to severely injure Ōnoki and force Iwagakure’s retreat. 3
He cultivated a personal faction of young Uchiha, including thirteen Elite Jonin with Three-Tomoe Sharingan, then used the clan crisis to challenge Fugaku’s leadership. Ren publicly dismantled the coup faction, impeached Fugaku for repeated concessions, defeated him, and gained recognition as clan head. 3 9 15
Fugaku formally relinquished the clan-head position, and the assembled Uchiha—including the elders, Shisui, Inabi, and Yashiro—recognized Ren’s authority following his Mangekyō Sharingan awakening. 15 21
Revival and expansion
As clan head, Ren established the Uchiha Shrine as an independent military institution, ordered Uchiha personnel to leave ANBU, and created the Temple Thirteen Squads to train and organize elite combatants. 16
He also reorganized the Military Police Force, assigning civilian matters to a Civilian Police Office and concentrating Uchiha fighters in the Konoha Security Bureau. 30
The clan subsequently defeated Kumogakure, forced the Land of Lightning into unconditional surrender, and received 678 billion ryo alongside mineral resources, chakra metal, military supplies, and trade privileges. The victory transformed the Uchiha from a distrusted Konoha clan into a major military and economic power. 129
Ren’s political campaign also led to Danzō’s removal, Root’s abolition, and the loss of Hiruzen Sarutobi’s central authority. The Uchiha retained their independence from the Hokage’s office while cooperating with Tsunade’s administration on mutually beneficial terms. 129 143 145
Ren rejected claims that the clan had deliberately withheld an established army of powerful fighters during Konoha’s earlier crises. He explained that most Shrine elites belonged to a new generation whose strength developed after his reforms through coordinated training, formations, and battlefield experience. 123
After defeating Hashirama, Ren invited Tobirama Senju to join the new Uchiha Shrine. Tobirama accepted the prospect voluntarily, citing the clans’ shared ancestry, the Senju’s dissolution as an organized clan, and the Shrine’s potential to gather talent beyond a single bloodline. He subsequently operated as Uchiha Jian, explicitly identifying Tobirama Senju as his former identity. 221 230 281
When underground Dark Exchange Houses continued posting bounties on Sharingan, the Shrine destroyed their Land of Fire outposts and seized their records and assets. The Uchiha then offered other villages incentives to purge exchanges in their own territories, bringing Iwagakure and other shinobi villages into the campaign. 223 238 248
Modernization
The clan expanded beyond a traditional shinobi family through industries, trade corridors, railways, construction, mining, and commercial districts such as Myriad City. Its businesses eventually supported a significant share of the populations of the Lands of Fire and Lightning. 144 327
To address personnel shortages and bloodline decline, Ren introduced open recruitment, childbirth incentives, centralized child-rearing, and the Inner Court–Outer Court system. The Inner Court preserves the clan’s military core and secret inheritance, while the Outer Court manages industry, public affairs, and permitted marriages with outsiders. 254 255 256 270
The childbirth policies included subsidies for additional children, housing priority for those preparing to marry, and communal childcare. Within months, marriages increased rapidly, pregnancies multiplied, and nursery facilities expanded. The clan also planned to identify children’s aptitudes early and train them for both military and civilian professions. 254 256
The clan’s enterprises later included electric lighting and a spiritual-resource collection company employing more than 100,000 people. Direct Uchiha-family employment reached the hundreds of thousands. 327 351
Conflict with Madara and Akatsuki
After Madara was revived and entered the Inner Court, the clan activated its grand defensive formation. Its fighters confronted him collectively; thirteen squad captains used the Heavenly Tribulation technique to batter his Complete Body Susanoo, although his regenerating Impure World body repeatedly restored it. Madara acknowledged that the modern clan had surpassed the Uchiha of his era. 282 289
Ren intervened to protect the captains, defeated Madara, and sealed him with a Petrification Seal. Following the intrusion, the Uchiha placed bounties on Akatsuki members and demanded that the organization surrender Tobi, Zetsu, Kakuzu, and Sasori. Shrine forces subsequently marched openly into the Land of Rain, where Akatsuki intercepted them outside Amegakure. 291 314 318 330 354
During the confrontation with Akatsuki, Ren took Nagato’s Rinnegan and issued orders concerning the organization’s members and captives. Black Zetsu later helped Madara break the Petrification Seal, prompting the Uchiha to defend the Inner Court again; Nanami confronted Madara with Ryūjin Jakka while Ren pursued Obito. 360 362
Ren claimed Akatsuki for the Uchiha after Nagato’s defeat. When the renewed Inner Court crisis was reported, he ordered his deployed forces home, directed Konan to escort the Akatsuki members back to the Land of Rain, and kept Nagato in separate custody. 360 362
Seireitei and wider ambitions
The Uchiha later left Konoha and established Seireitei. Their Shrine squads, businesses, trading organizations, intelligence network, and forces stationed across the land gave the clan influence beyond that of any single shinobi village. 377
Ren convened a Seireitei assembly amid concern that other nations viewed the clan’s expanding power and his Rinnegan as threats. He stated that the conference was not intended to make countries submit to the Uchiha; its stated aims included addressing fear of the clan and pursuing a shinobi world without war. 376 378
His proposed order made the Uchiha responsible for guaranteeing a peace treaty and enforcing judgments against violators. Clan elders warned that arbitration would require both sufficient force and absolute fairness, while exposing the family to accusations of favoritism, covert attacks, and attempts to manufacture conflicts. 378
At the Seireitei Conference, Ren demonstrated the breadth of the clan’s military system, including its elite squads, corporate ninja, peacekeeping forces, and capacity to finance a large mercenary army. He also confirmed that Shisui and Itachi possessed Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and showed footage of their Complete Body Susanoo fighting, establishing that the clan’s strategic deterrence did not depend solely on his Rinnegan. 385 386 387 395
The resulting World Peace Treaty placed the Uchiha in the role of guarantor, with Shisui appointed World Peace Ambassador to oversee enforcement. Public announcements presented the agreement as a new era of peaceful development, and many civilians trusted its guarantees because of the clan’s demonstrated strength. 393 404
Ren’s longer-term ambitions also extended beyond the shinobi world. The increasing requirements for family advancement led him to regard the traces of the Ōtsutsuki and the distant stars as the route to greater resources and higher realms of power. 360
Post-conference development
The Uchiha introduced Heavenly Treasury Gold despite opposition from daimyo and nobles who questioned a family’s right to issue currency. Ren tied acceptance to participation in the clan’s commercial network: merchants refusing it would lose access to Uchiha trade channels, factory supply contracts, and the bank’s exchange and notarization services. 391 392
The Uchiha Bank expanded into national capitals, major cities, and important trade routes. Reliable transfers and fulfilled contracts encouraged merchants to deposit their fortunes, and the bank became the clan’s largest commercial group. Its growth accelerated the rise of Family Fortune after the conference. 398
The peaceful environment supported further expansion in banking, workshops, medicinal herbs, mining, transportation, construction, and trade. Merchant guilds built roads, provided employment, and eliminated bandits, increasing popular trust in Seireitei while the military system continued producing new Kage-level fighters. 401
Under Uchiha leadership, elite ninja from the Five Great Countries also formed the World Police Force, tasked with crossing national borders to eliminate rogue ninja and terrorist forces. 405
The clan continued cultivating the next generation through the Hidden Dragon Hall. Sasuke entered Konoha’s Team 7 after receiving extensive clan training, while Ren agreed to provide advanced instruction to Sasuke, Naruto, and Sakura. Konoha’s leadership viewed this connection as an opportunity to strengthen relations with the Uchiha. 404 405 408
By this period, the Uchiha surname itself had become a commercial advantage in the mission market. Kakashi explained that clients associated the name with reliable completion, although Sasuke insisted on establishing a reputation independent of his family and older brother. 414

Abilities & Resources
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
The Uchiha’s defining bloodline is the Sharingan, attributed to Indra’s inherited Sage Eye. Its advanced Mangekyō form is exceptionally rare and grants individual ocular techniques and Susanoo. 29 35 263
- The clan initially possesses four confirmed Mangekyō users: Ren, Fugaku, Shisui, and Itachi. Orochimaru and Uchiha Jian Zhen later also awaken Mangekyō Sharingan. 129 162 408
- Fugaku and Shisui publicly manifested enormous Susanoo to intimidate Konoha’s clan heads and leadership. 35
- The Sharingan’s power places extreme strain on the user’s eyes; blindness and ocular damage are treated as a major strategic vulnerability. 156 157
- The Basic Bloodline Tempering Potion can purify Indra bloodline traits, improve Sharingan-awakening potential, and enhance spiritual, physical, and chakra aptitude. It cannot yet be mass-produced. 246 256
- Ren later publicly displayed the Rinnegan, contributing to the clan’s rise to Family Level 4. The clan’s possession of Rinnegan power became a major factor in how other nations assessed it. 351 376
- Shisui and Itachi subsequently attain Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, enter the Super-Kage realm, and gain the ability to wield Complete Body Susanoo. Ren publicly confirms these developments at the Seireitei Conference. 384 385 395
- Footage shown to the conference depicts Shisui and Itachi deploying two Complete Body Susanoo simultaneously, cleaving mountains and splitting the earth. Their emergence gives the clan additional strategic deterrents independent of Ren. 387 395 397
- Ren identifies the Mangekyō Sharingan, rather than his own Rinnegan alone, as the family’s true strategic power. 387
Temple Formation
The Temple Formation links members’ chakra, Sharingan perception, and combat rhythm into a synchronized unit. 81 153
- Four Uchiha can combine perception, Lightning Release, Fire Release, and genjutsu to overwhelm stronger opponents. 81 153
- Four Elite Jonin can temporarily display Kage-level combat power through the formation. 265
- Larger formations increase the Shrine’s battlefield strength beyond the sum of its individual members. 208 265
- Sustained marches and repeated engagements still exhaust members physically and mentally despite their coordination. 82
- The formation also circulates different chakra natures through its members: Fire and Lightning enhance combat performance, Yin strengthens Sharingan perception, and Yang repairs fatigue-related damage. Battlefield pressure can accelerate this circulation and help members break through existing limits. 85
- The later squad system includes eight regular members per squad, all selected young Three-Tomoe Sharingan users with at least Jonin-level strength who specialize in the Battle Wall Formation. 386
Tiger-Leopard Thunderclap Body-Tempering Technique
A nine-level cultivation method that tempers the entire body through controlled internal vibration. 156
- Strengthens muscles, tendons, bones, skin, organs, blood, vitality, and sensory organs. 156
- Can nourish and temper the eyes, directly addressing the physical burden of Sharingan and Mangekyō use. 156 158
- Its introductory level can be taught throughout the clan rather than reserved for elite bloodline users. 158
- Higher mastery is described as granting extreme durability, regeneration, and near-immortality. 137
- Body Tempering Pills later supplement the technique within the clan’s broader training system, helping younger members develop more rapidly. 396 397
Great River Qi Refinement Method
A cultivation system that refines chakra into denser, more stable True Essence. 158
- The first three stages organize and compress chakra; the fourth stage onward absorbs natural spiritual energy and permanently refines it into True Essence. 159
- Improves chakra control, recovery, endurance, synchronization, and the performance of ninjutsu, genjutsu, and formations. 158
- Unlike Senjutsu, its growth is permanent rather than temporary and does not rely on a volatile chakra–nature-energy mixture. 159
- Ren states that it can allow diligent practitioners to surpass conventional talent and chakra-reserve limits, making Kage and Super-Kage advancement attainable. 159
- Its integration with body tempering and resource support eventually produces repeated Jonin-to-Kage breakthroughs throughout the military organization, rather than strengthening only a few exceptional individuals. 265 270 401
Heart Sea Spirit Refinement Art
A spiritual cultivation method intended to stabilize the mind and strengthen willpower. 137 159
- Improves resistance to genjutsu, ocular techniques, and soul-based attacks. 137
- Helps Uchiha bear advanced ocular power and reduces emotional instability associated with Sharingan evolution. 137
- Its early stages require meditation, willpower training, and contemplation of the “heart sea.” 137
- Together with the body-tempering and qi-refinement methods, it forms a complete body, energy, and spirit cultivation system. 159
Armament Haki
A secret art associated with the Uchiha Family that coats the body or weapons in hardened chakra to enhance offense and defense. It does not require complex hand seals, but depends on precise chakra control and sufficient refinement. 331
- Uchiha Linghua uses a hardened coating strong enough to withstand Deidara’s explosions without bodily injury. Her mastery is explicitly distinguished from that of ordinary Shrine members. 331
- Ren incorporates Armament Haki into advanced physical attacks, using it to protect his striking limb and support the combination of compressed fist force and penetrating vibration. 293
Military strength
The Shrine’s growth turns the Uchiha into a force comparable to—or exceeding—a great shinobi village. 208 325
- The Temple initially fielded forty-three Three-Tomoe elites against Root. 20
- It later expanded to nearly two hundred official members, most possessing Jonin-level strength. 315
- Four squads deployed against the Akatsuki publicly included seventeen Kage-level fighters and dozens of Elite Jonin; the remaining nine squads and major clan leaders stayed behind. 325
- Foreign intelligence estimates place the clan’s total at forty to fifty Kage-level combatants, though the Inner Court’s true strength remains concealed. 327 329
- The thirteen squad captains can guide Heavenly Tribulation, a forbidden technique developed by Tobirama Senju, subsequently known as Uchiha Jian, from the Temple’s Ten Thousand Lightning formation, array techniques, and True Essence. Its lightning clouds contain natural power without requiring the users to absorb that power into their bodies. 281 289
- The clan develops specialized equipment alongside its cultivation arts. Ren forged Nanami’s Ryūjin Jakka from special biometal and Blaze Release Cursed Seals; its released flames damaged Madara’s Susanoo, though its heat also endangered nearby defenses. 362 363
- At the Seireitei Conference, Ren reveals that Uchiha companies employ more than 1,300 ninja squads that could rapidly reinforce the Peacekeeping Forces. These personnel are not all Uchiha clansmen; they are hired, trained, and supported through the family’s businesses. 387
- Ren states that the family can finance and sustain a mercenary army of 100,000 ninja or more. This is a declared mobilization capacity, not the established standing size of its elite clan forces. 387
- Subsequent foreign assessments describe hundreds of Three-Tomoe Jonin and a corporation commanding more than 10,000 ninja, in addition to the clan’s forty to fifty Kage-level fighters and publicly displayed strategic leaders. 397
- The family’s combination of cultivation methods, pills, bloodline potions, childhood education, and battlefield training becomes a central foreign concern. Ōnoki identifies this reproducible system—not merely Ren, Shisui, and Itachi—as the clan’s most consequential advantage. 396 397
- The Uchiha War Hall continues producing new Kage-level fighters as its members advance through resources, cultivation, and combat experience. 401
Defensive infrastructure
The Inner Court is fortified with layered seals, underground barriers, sensory detection, patrols, and defenses against spatial infiltration. White Zetsu’s Mayfly Technique and Obito’s Kamui are both considered unreliable methods of entering it. 270 276
- The Uchiha Wall consists of seven Sunken Gold Iron gates that absorb chakra and must be opened through pure physical strength. 277 279
- The seventh gate weighs 256 tons; opening all seven triggers eighteen ceremonial bell chimes and earns a direct audience with the clan head. 277 279
- Before Madara’s arrival, Ren was the only known person to have opened all seven gates. 279
- The Inner Court’s highest-level formation raises a blood-red barrier and protective screens around important structures. It was activated during Madara’s intrusion. 282
- These defenses are not impenetrable: an intruder later bypassed them and damaged the statue holding Madara’s Petrification Seal. 362
- The clan also maintains coordinated civilian emergency procedures. During Madara’s attack, hired commercial personnel closed shops and evacuated customers while Outer Court guards maintained order and directed families into protected areas. 283
Economic and financial resources
The clan’s commercial network provides revenue, transportation, supplies, intelligence, and access to ninja personnel across national borders. Foreign leaders increasingly treat this infrastructure as a source of military power rather than merely civilian wealth. 376 387 397
- Uchiha Bank operates branches in capitals, major cities, and trade corridors, accumulating substantial merchant deposits and becoming the family’s largest commercial group. 398
- Heavenly Treasury Gold is the monetary system promoted by the Uchiha despite objections from existing political authorities. Access to Uchiha commerce, exchange, and notarization services is used to encourage its acceptance. 391 392
- Merchant guilds, workshops, medicinal-herb businesses, mines, transport companies, and construction enterprises expand further under the peace established after the conference. 401
- The family’s wealth allows it to hire wandering ninja, support retired ninja, absorb smaller shinobi organizations, and continually fund the training of its younger generation. 397
Relationships
- Uchiha Ren — Current clan head and architect of the Shrine, cultivation system, political reforms, and economic expansion. He later establishes the World Peace Treaty and directs the clan’s international financial and security initiatives. 15 29 137 392 404 405
- Fugaku Uchiha — Former clan head who surrendered leadership to Ren; later serves in the Hall of Glory and assists with administration and trade. He supports Ren’s decision to instruct Sasuke and accepts his son’s wish to establish an independent path. 15 16 137 408
- Uchiha Shisui — Mangekyō wielder, Hall of Glory member, clan defender, and one of Ren’s designated restraints against unchecked ambition. He later attains Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and Super-Kage strength and is appointed World Peace Ambassador. 16 29 46 385 393
- Uchiha Itachi — Mangekyō wielder, Zero Squad captain, and another safeguard entrusted to oppose Ren should he become dangerous. He later reaches the Super-Kage realm, possesses Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and can deploy Complete Body Susanoo. 16 29 64 384 385
- Hyuga Clan — Former dōjutsu rival turned wartime ally after Konoha attempted to sacrifice Hizashi to Kumogakure; the Hyuga provide Byakugan reconnaissance for Uchiha operations. Ren later identifies their Hamura-derived lineage as another branch of the wider Ōtsutsuki ancestry. 47 215
- Konohagakure — The Uchiha remain a founding clan of Konoha but reject subordination to the Hokage Tower, framing their relationship as cooperation between independent powers. They subsequently leave Konoha and establish Seireitei. Individual clan members continue participating in Konoha’s institutions, while Ren’s planned instruction of Team 7 offers a renewed connection between the two powers. 121 145 231 377 404
- Senju Clan — Historical rival and related bloodline descended from Asura; the clan’s decline is repeatedly used as a warning against abandoning Uchiha identity and inheritance. 29 214 255
- Tobirama Senju / Uchiha Jian — Former Second Hokage and historical opponent of the Uchiha who voluntarily joins the new Shrine and adopts the Uchiha Jian identity. His research contributes advanced space-time techniques and Heavenly Tribulation to the clan’s arsenal. 230 281 289
- Kumogakure — Defeated by the Uchiha-Hyuga alliance and compelled to provide reparations, resources, and trade privileges. Its leadership later recognizes the clan’s corporate military network and sustainable training system as obstacles that cannot be overcome simply by targeting Ren. 47 129 397
- Akatsuki — Direct enemy following its involvement in Madara’s intrusion into the Inner Court; the Shrine issues an ultimatum demanding the surrender of key members and confronts the organization in the Land of Rain. After defeating Nagato, Ren claims the organization for the Uchiha and directs its members’ movements. 315 318 330 360 362
- Madara Uchiha — Former clan leader who initially condemned the Uchiha for remaining in Konoha. After confronting the modern clan, he acknowledged its strength, but remained an adversary; his escape from its Petrification Seal triggered another Inner Court crisis. 263 289 362
- Obito Uchiha — Estranged Mangekyō wielder whom Ren invites to return during the clan’s proclaimed Golden Age. Obito rejects the offer and threatens to destroy the clan if it obstructs his plans. 75
- Mabui and Samui Uchiha — Former Kumogakure personnel who joined the clan’s administrative work and received the Uchiha surname after pledging themselves to Ren’s vision. Mabui subsequently represents the clan in city construction, trade-route planning, and resource allocation. 137 149 152
- Orochimaru and Uchiha Jian Zhen — Later confirmed Mangekyō Sharingan users associated with the clan’s expanded leadership and power structure. 408
- Kurama Yakumo — Ren’s student, who pledges to serve the Uchiha in return for instruction in physical conditioning and mental cultivation. She later becomes a genjutsu master whose power intimidates the wider shinobi world. 254 408
- Sasuke Uchiha — Fugaku’s younger son, Itachi’s brother, and an elite Hidden Dragon Hall disciple. He joins Team 7 with a Two-Tomoe Sharingan and Special Jonin-level overall strength, while seeking recognition beyond his family’s reputation. 405 411 414
- Kakashi Hatake — Holds the Sharingan given to him by Obito. Ren permits him to retain it and applies a protective Cursed Seal that suppresses its passive chakra drain and destroys the eye if someone attempts to remove it. 175
