Background / History
Hashirama and Madara’s Final Battle
The valley was the site of Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha’s decisive confrontation, where their break became irrevocable. Madara fought with the Nine-Tails and Susanoo, while Hashirama used senjutsu-enhanced Wood Release to overpower them 134 194 200.
Their battle permanently altered the terrain. Decades later, cracks, enormous craters, diverted rivers, and shattered mountains still recorded its destructive scale. Tsunade had personally seen these remains and remembered the Senju elders’ accounts of the fight 193.
Madara had prepared Izanagi in advance to survive his apparent death. During the confrontation, he bit off Hashirama’s flesh and later transplanted it into himself, combining their powers as part of his pursuit of the Rinnegan 283 284.
Madara’s Majestic Attire Susanoo, formed by covering the Nine-Tails with Susanoo armor, was overwhelmed by Hashirama’s Top Transformed Buddha. Nevertheless, Madara continued fighting rather than surrendering when confronted by Hashirama’s Sage Mode and strongest Wood Release techniques 264 289.
In later recollections, Madara remembered deceiving Hashirama with his apparent death and leaving the battlefield grievously wounded. Tsunade likewise recalled that Madara had faked his death and departed, while Hashirama’s life gradually ebbed away afterward 367 409.
Relocation of Ren’s Battle
Ren used the Heavenly Transfer Technique to move himself and Orochimaru’s assembled combatants from Konoha to the valley, preventing the coming battle from engulfing the village. Kakashi explained the relocation, while Shikaku detected the distant chakra signatures 194.
The transfer itself severely injured Kakuzu and Orochimaru. Sasori’s modified puppet body fared better, and the reanimated shinobi repaired their damage. Hashirama and Ren arrived unharmed, landing on the river beneath the valley’s stone statues 194.
Orochimaru called the location fitting for another Uchiha challenger to face the First. Ren declared Hashirama the only shinobi he regarded as a true challenge, and Hashirama enthusiastically accepted a fair fight 194.
Hiruzen and Tsunade pursued the distant chakra signatures, fearing that Orochimaru could use Hashirama to destroy Konoha if Ren lost. Shikaku was tasked with organizing the villagers’ evacuation and placing the Sealing Unit on standby 194.
Ren and Hashirama’s Duel
| Phase | Events at the valley |
|---|---|
| Opening exchange | Hashirama surrounded Ren with Hands of the Buddha, then countered his close-range attack with the Wood Human Technique. Ren’s repeated strikes shattered the construct’s fist and arm 195. |
| Forest encirclement | Deep Forest Emergence transformed the valley into a chakra-controlled forest. Vines threatened to ensnare Ren and drain his chakra, while Wood Golems narrowed his escape routes 197. |
| Susanoo breakthrough | Ren’s Third-Form Susanoo fired the Spiral Sword through five Rashomon gates, wounded Hashirama, and split a distant mountain peak. Hashirama answered with Flower Tree World Advent, filling the valley with paralyzing pollen 198. |
| Complete Body Susanoo | Ren manifested his Complete Body Susanoo. Its wingbeats uprooted large stretches of Hashirama’s forest and dispersed the approaching pollen, while its steps crushed trees and divided the river around its ankles 199. |
| Sage-powered escalation | Hashirama entered Sage Mode and summoned True Several Thousand Hands. Its enormous wooden arms filled the sky, forcing spectators to flee 200. |
| Mass bombardment | Ren’s Meteor Sword Rain met Hashirama’s Top Transformed Buddha head-on. The collisions shattered wooden fists, collapsed mountains, and split the ground into deep chasms 201 202. |
| Taijutsu finish | Ren used Layered Evening Elephant to stack Air Cannons along the same trajectory, destroying a regenerating Wood Golem and tearing apart Hashirama’s reanimated body faster than it could recover. Later accounts confirmed Hashirama’s defeat 205 264. |
Hiruzen and Tsunade reached the outskirts during the clash between Meteor Sword Rain and Top Transformed Buddha. The ground rose and collapsed beneath them, forcing them to halt, while the aftershocks flattened the forest separating them from the main battlefield. Hiruzen witnessed Ren block Hashirama’s strongest barrage head-on 201 202.
Encirclement and End of the Fighting
Fugaku, Shisui, and other Uchiha arrived during the duel. They remained outside the worst shockwaves while guarding approaches against an ambush, then tightened an encirclement around Orochimaru and his allies 202 208.
Obito and the Zetsus initially intended to attack Ren after he exhausted himself. Ren’s sustained attacks and space-distorting taijutsu instead convinced them to withdraw, abandoning the surrounded fighters 204 215.
The valley also became the setting for Ren’s discussions with Hashirama and Tobirama about the failure of village-based peace, the Senju and Uchiha’s shared ancestry, and the reincarnation of Indra and Asura. Ren offered Tobirama a place in the new Uchiha Shrine 210 214 215 220 221.
These discussions extended to the God Tree, Chakra Fruit, Ten-Tails, and the origins of the nine Tailed Beasts, as well as Indra’s development of hand seals and the succession dispute that divided Ninshū. Hashirama and Tobirama learned that the conflict between their clan and the Uchiha had grown from the struggle between the Sage of Six Paths’ sons 216 217 220.
The wider battle ended when Itachi sealed Hozuki Gengetsu with the Totsuka Blade and Shisui defeated the Third Kazekage, whose remains were sealed by Shrine members. The Uchiha then secured the battlefield and treated the wounded. Ren returned with the Senju brothers freed from Orochimaru’s Control Cursed Seals, allowing Tsunade to reunite with Hashirama 222.
Shrine members also inspected the completed seals and cleared dangerous residual chakra from the battlefield. Tobirama later conveyed the ancestral history revealed in the valley to Tsunade 222 230.
Investigation of the Ruins
After Tsunade announced Ren’s victory at the Daimyo Court, the Daimyo sent Kazuma, Chiriku, and the Guardian Ninja to inspect the valley. Asuma was separately ordered to obtain confirmation from Konoha’s eyewitnesses 232.
The investigators found the former gorge almost unrecognizable. Chiriku identified the surviving wooden Buddha through Fire Temple records, while its enormous palm-shaped craters confirmed the use of True Several Thousand Hands. Kazuma ordered an immediate report, and the Guardian Ninja left convinced that the court must not make an enemy of Ren 232 233.
Nobles’ spies, independent shinobi clans, and representatives of the Five Great Villages subsequently examined the same evidence. Kitsuchi personally surveyed the battlefield before reporting to Ōnoki, who judged Ren to have reached the terrifying tier occupied by Madara and Hashirama 233 234.
Maps carried by the noble scouts no longer matched the valley’s rivers, cliffs, or roads. Envoys from independent clans identified a mountain gouge as the result of sheer impact rather than a ninjutsu explosion, while village investigators concluded that the other Kage-level combatants had left no traces comparable to those of Ren and Hashirama 233 234.
Later Recollections and the Reincarnation Cycle
Following Madara’s reanimation, Obito reported Ren’s battle at the valley, describing the Complete Body Susanoo confronting Top Transformed Buddha amid collapsing terrain. The account reminded Madara of his own confrontation with Hashirama and convinced him that Ren had reached a level worthy of a personal meeting 264 265.
The valley also remained a complicated symbol within Uchiha memory. Madara’s name evoked the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo, but also his departure from Konoha and rupture with Hashirama. Ren’s later achievements gave renewed significance to a battlefield long associated with that legacy 154 264 265.
When Ren identified Naruto and Sasuke as the latest reincarnations of Asura and Indra, Tsunade recalled Hashirama and Madara’s final confrontation at the valley and feared a repetition of their conflict. Ren explained that the inherited chakra would encourage competition without controlling the boys’ personalities, and maintained that proper guidance could make them pillars of Konoha rather than enemies 409.
Geography and Landmarks
Landscape Changes
| Feature | Before Ren’s duel | After Ren’s duel |
|---|---|---|
| River | A surging river ran between the cliffs and statues 194. | The river was severed; remaining water wound around rubble and broken rocks 210 220 232. |
| Cliffs and mountains | Towering cliffs flanked the water, already scarred by Hashirama and Madara’s battle 193 194. | Most cliffs collapsed. Straight ravines and piercing scars cut through multiple mountain peaks 232 234. |
| Valley floor | A gorge marked by old cracks and battle craters 193. | A colossal abyss with no visible bottom, overlapping palm-shaped craters, and fissures wide enough to swallow a house 232 233. |
| Surrounding forest | Dense woodland stood outside the valley 196. | Battle aftershocks flattened forests, including areas dozens of miles away 201 202. |
- Temporary forest coverage: Deep Forest Emergence split the mountain walls, severed the river with roots, and largely concealed the statues beneath branches and leaves before later attacks devastated the created forest 197 199 200.
- Impact and projectile scars: Residual fist force cut straight ravines through mountain peaks, while Spiral Swords left enormous holes and twisted, shattered rock along their paths 232 234.
- Extent of destruction: Kitsuchi reported cracks stretching across dozens of miles, handprints wider than Iwagakure’s large buildings, and a particularly deep scar extending across more than half the valley 234.
Hashirama and Madara Statues
- Two towering stone statues stood on opposite sides of the valley, representing the opposition between the Senju and Uchiha 194 220.
- Both were badly damaged by Ren and Hashirama’s battle 220.
- Their surviving remains allowed investigators to recognize the site despite its radically altered terrain 232.
True Several Thousand Hands Remains
- Hashirama’s mountain-sized wooden Buddha remained standing after the battle, with broken arms scattered across dozens of miles 232 234.
- Chiriku explained that Wood Release creates real wood rather than temporary chakra constructs, accounting for the remains’ persistence 232.
- He estimated that the Buddha’s outstretched arms had covered nearly half the valley and judged its size greater than the version described in Fire Temple’s historical records 233.
- Residual chakra remained powerful enough to make later visitors reluctant to approach the valley floor and wooden Buddha 233 234.
- Kitsuchi located the surviving Buddha at the edge of the canyon and reported that its immense body and remaining arms still made him afraid to approach after the fighting had ended 234.
Political Significance
- Evidence of Ren’s victory: The surviving Buddha, vast craters, and shattered mountains made reports of Hashirama’s defeat impossible for visiting investigators to dismiss as exaggeration 233 234.
- Deterrence against the Daimyo Court: Ren specifically asked Tsunade to publicize the outcome so nobles and civilian elites would understand the danger of threatening the Uchiha 232.
- Leverage beyond the Land of Fire: During Nanami’s confrontation with Iwagakure, the recently inspected abyss served as direct proof behind her warning that Ren would retaliate if her squad were harmed 235.
- Reassessment by the great villages: Investigators recognized that ordinary Kage-level fighters could not meaningfully influence a confrontation of this scale. Reports from the valley established Ren as a new God of Shinobi whose power could not be countered by a single village’s numerical strength 234.
- Challenge to the existing peace framework: Amid the ruins, Ren argued that Hashirama’s division of power among the Five Great Countries had perpetuated war. He proposed a counterbalancing authority above all countries and ninja villages, using the devastated battlefield as the setting for his declaration 210.
