Mangekyō Sharingan 263 264 Madara and his younger brother Izuna both awakened it while leading the Uchiha against the Senju.
Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 264 Madara fused Izuna’s eyes with his own. His Eternal Mangekyō let him use Complete Body Susanoo without the ordinary Mangekyō’s risk of blindness 264 301.
Rinnegan 266 After taking Hashirama’s flesh at the Valley of the End and incorporating his cells, Madara awakened the Rinnegan decades later, near the end of his life.
Enhanced Impure World Reincarnation body 261 262 Obito and Black Zetsu summoned him early in a youthful body made with a White Zetsu sacrifice and Hashirama’s Cells. It combines his Eternal Mangekyō, Wood Release, replenishing chakra, and regeneration; he does not possess the Rinnegan at this stage 262 284.
Weakened post-seal state 356 362 More than ten days of chakra drainage and damage to his soul leave him far below his peak, although he can still manifest Complete Body Susanoo and threaten the Inner Court.
Rinnegan manifested during the second confrontation 367 Madara is subsequently described with a genuine Rinnegan, which he turns while attempting to establish a connection with Ren’s eyes.

Background / History

Madara led the Uchiha during their long conflict with the Senju. He and Hashirama eventually founded Konoha to end the practice of sending their clans’ children into battle. Madara later urged the Uchiha to leave the village, but few followed him; he regarded their decision to stay as a betrayal 188 263.

His rule over the clan had depended on overwhelming personal strength and is described as dictatorial. After his defection, the Uchiha reduced the clan leader’s authority to prevent another leader from imposing disastrous decisions on the entire clan. Major decisions instead required agreement from the Elders Council and clan assembly 4.

Hashirama’s guilt over Madara’s separation from Konoha also influenced the village’s founding covenant. To safeguard the village’s original purpose against future misuse of Hokage authority, Hashirama granted the Uchiha the right to impeach the Hokage under extreme circumstances; the Senju received an equivalent right 122.

He fought Hashirama at the Valley of the End and prepared Izanagi to conceal his survival. During the battle, he obtained Hashirama’s flesh, intending to combine their powers, awaken the Rinnegan, gather the Tailed Beasts, and carry out Infinite Tsukuyomi. He believed this Eye of the Moon Plan could create a world without war, betrayal, or pain 266 283.

After awakening the Rinnegan, Madara summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and gained Six Paths Power. In his old age, he depended on the statue to sustain his life; this frail but still intimidating figure was the Madara whom the young Obito encountered 203.

Madara’s Rinnegan was transplanted into Nagato, whose Uzumaki vitality made him suitable to bear the eyes. The resurrection scheme depended on Nagato eventually performing Rinne Rebirth to restore Madara to life, at the cost of Nagato’s own life force 348.

Ren later identifies Madara as a reincarnation of Indra’s chakra and Hashirama as one of Asura’s. Their connection belongs to a recurring cycle between the Uchiha and Senju bloodlines 220 230.

Appearance

After his summoning, Madara has a youthful body. He is described wearing armor and later appears at the Uchiha gates beneath a cloaked windbreaker 261 270 276.

  • Long hair and dark red armor 270 280.
  • Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 262 267.
  • An Impure World body that reconstructs itself from paper-like scraps when damaged 304.
  • After breaking out of the stone statue, he appears with long black hair, battered armor, and a face marked by age 356.
  • A genuine Rinnegan is described during his later confrontation with Ren 367.

Personality

Madara judges leaders and fighters by strength. He initially dismisses the modern Uchiha and treats their refusal to leave Konoha with him as betrayal. Reports of Ren’s victory over Hashirama and the clan’s four Mangekyō wielders force him to reassess them 263 264 265.

At the Uchiha Inner Court, Madara sees a prosperous, disciplined clan stronger than the one he once led. Rather than abandon his belief that peace will collapse, he decides to destroy what Ren has built. In battle, he attacks the Inner Court and its residents to force Ren out of intangibility 283 296.

Madara can nevertheless acknowledge an opponent: he accepts Ren as an equal after their clash and admits that Ren has surpassed his own mastery of Susanoo 295 298.

He also praises Uchiha Jian’s improved techniques after being suppressed by Shifting Phantom, admitting that he underestimated his old adversary. He recognizes the ingenuity of combining tangible clones, True Essence, and Flying Thunder God even while insisting that absolute power remains decisive 281.

His captivity intensifies his anger toward the clan. He regards being displayed, drained of chakra, and used to intimidate the Shinobi World as a personal humiliation, and threatens to destroy the Uchiha in retaliation 356.

Ren’s Rinnegan awakening further unsettles his confidence. Madara contrasts his own decades-long evolution with Ren’s transformation in just over ten days and concludes that ordinary talent cannot explain it. Despite resisting Black Zetsu’s advice to flee, he eventually acknowledges Ren’s victory in their second encounter and withdraws 367 370.

Abilities & Skills

Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and Divine Foresight

Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō supplies the ocular power for his Susanoo. His dōjutsu, Divine Foresight, shows him several seconds into the future 267 301.

  • He uses foresight to anticipate attacks, but it cannot make an attack connect with Ren while Ren is intangible 268 296.
  • Unlike an ordinary Mangekyō wielder, Madara does not risk blindness from using his Eternal Mangekyō 264 301.
  • Foresight reveals that Ren’s Spiral Sword will pierce his Susanoo, Wood Golem, and chest, but the attack is too fast for him to dodge. He attempts to intercept it with a cross-shaped sword attack instead 303 304.

Complete Body Susanoo

Madara manifests a towering blue, winged Susanoo with four arms and chakra swords 284 312.

  • Its sword attacks can devastate terrain and overwhelm three Fourth-Stage Susanoo in a single sweep 295 296.
  • His reanimated body’s replenishing chakra lets him rebuild Susanoo after the Uchiha Shrine’s Heavenly Tribulation repeatedly shatters it 289.
  • He can armor a Wood Golem with Susanoo, combining the golem’s vitality and recovery with Susanoo’s weapons and defense 303.
  • He can increase a blade’s power by compressing additional ocular power into it and bringing all four arms to bear on a single slash. Ren nevertheless stops this full-power attack with one hand in his Deity Transformation state 301.
  • During the Valley of the End battle, Madara controlled the Nine-Tails and covered it with Majestic Attire Susanoo. Hashirama’s Top Transformed Buddha defeated that combination head-on 264.
  • His later Majestic Attire Wood Golem connects the chakra of Wood Release and Susanoo so that their strengths compensate for one another. It is not equivalent to Ren’s fusion of Susanoo into his own flesh 303.

Wood Release and Reanimated Body

Hashirama’s Cells grant Madara Wood Release in his enhanced Impure World body. He uses it to overpower Uchiha Jian’s Wood Release and to create a Wood Golem 284 303.

  • His body regenerates severe damage, including the wounds left when Ren’s Spiral Sword pierces him 304.
  • Regeneration does not stop Ren’s Petrification Seal, which spreads through Madara’s reconstructed body and imprisons him 305.
  • He creates Wood Dragons that bite apart and tear through Uchiha Jian’s dragons, demonstrating proficiency beyond that of ordinary recipients of Hashirama’s Cells 284.
  • Wood Release: Hōbi Technique raises a massive demon-faced wooden shield. It withstands several of Ren’s Spiral Swords without being completely penetrated 302.
  • His reanimated body retains his independent consciousness, allowing him to choose techniques and targets rather than fight as a forcibly controlled puppet 312.
  • The replenishing body does not prevent lasting impairment from captivity: sustained chakra extraction and soul damage leave him substantially weakened after his escape 356.

Taijutsu and Physical Strength

  • Madara exchanges rapid close-range attacks with Uchiha Jian, whose Flying Thunder God movements are difficult for onlookers to follow 280.
  • He opens all seven chakra-resistant Inner Court gates through physical force alone, including the final 256-ton gate 277.
  • He uses strikes and ground-shattering shockwaves to repel Jian’s tangible clones, eventually destroying one sufficiently damaged clone, although their position-switching tactics keep him on the defensive until he escalates to Susanoo 281.

Fire Release and Genjutsu

  • Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation produces a sea of flames that clashes with Uchiha Jian’s Water Dragon Bullet Technique 281.
  • His Sharingan genjutsu can control Tailed Beasts, including the Nine-Tails used in his battle against Hashirama 264 375.
  • During his renewed attack on the Inner Court, his Susanoo blade carries wind and fire. Ren’s chakra absorption consumes both components and the blade’s chakra fragments 364 366.

Rinnegan and Technical Knowledge

Madara awakened the Rinnegan by combining his own power with Hashirama’s Cells over several decades. The eyes allowed him to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and access Six Paths Power 203 266.

  • His original Rinnegan was placed in Nagato as part of the plan for his eventual true resurrection 348.
  • During the second confrontation, Madara is described turning his genuine Rinnegan while attempting to establish a connection with Ren’s eyes 367.
  • He identifies Ren’s durable duplicate as a Yin–Yang Release Shadow Clone, rather than an ordinary Shadow Clone or a special Rinnegan clone. He explains that Yin Release shapes its form while Yang Release grants life, producing flesh, bones, meridians, and vitality 370.
  • He recognizes that such a clone can retain some of the original’s Rinnegan abilities and survive ordinary attacks unless its sustaining Yin–Yang Release Core is destroyed 370.

Strength Assessments

  • Black Zetsu places Madara and Hashirama in the Super-Kage realm, beyond ordinary jōnin and most Kage-level fighters 182.
  • His enhanced reanimated body restores his Eternal Mangekyō-era power, adds fully integrated Hashirama’s Cells and Wood Release, and is assessed as standing at the pinnacle beneath the Six Paths level 262.
  • After Ren pierces his combined Susanoo and Wood Golem defenses, Madara acknowledges that Ren’s explosive power exceeds both his own and Hashirama’s. He no longer has absolute confidence in victory even if he reclaims the Rinnegan 304.
  • His weakened Complete Body Susanoo remains dangerous enough that Nanami’s Ryūjin Jakka, which melted his Third-Stage Susanoo, cannot stop its full-force strike 366.

Relationships

  • Hashirama Senju — Madara’s Konoha co-founder and defining rival. Madara took his flesh at the Valley of the End; Ren later identifies them as reincarnations of Indra’s and Asura’s chakra 188 220 266.
  • Izuna Uchiha — Madara’s younger brother and a fellow Mangekyō wielder. Madara fused Izuna’s eyes with his own to awaken the Eternal Mangekyō 263 264.
  • Uchiha Ren — The modern clan leader whose defeat of Hashirama draws Madara’s interest. Madara eventually recognizes Ren as an equal, then loses their duel and is sealed by him. Their second encounter ends with Madara acknowledging defeat to Ren’s Yin–Yang Release Shadow Clone and retreating 265 295 305 370.
  • Obito Uchiha — Helps summon Madara ahead of schedule and briefs him on Ren. Madara’s independent will makes Obito wary of the fighter he has revived. Madara later becomes furious on learning that Obito used his cells without permission to strengthen Nagato; Obito’s subsequent Rinnegan-based attempt to truly revive Madara fails 261 262 264 365 401.
  • Black Zetsu — Helps arrange Madara’s summoning, later aids his escape from the Petrification Seal, and warns him against fighting Ren while weakened. Ren identifies Black Zetsu as the hidden manipulator behind Madara’s pursuit of the Eye of the Moon Plan, describing Madara as its most valuable pawn. Black Zetsu later seeks to keep its suspicion of the Sage of Six Paths’ involvement in Ren’s power from Madara 261 356 369 395.
  • Tobirama Senju / Uchiha Jian — Madara’s old adversary, now working with the Uchiha. They clash when Madara visits the Inner Court. Madara recognizes Jian’s identity from his chakra and fighting habits, and later praises his improved mastery of clone and space-time techniques 270 280 281 283.
  • Nagato Uzumaki — The recipient of Madara’s transplanted Rinnegan and the intended instrument of his resurrection through Rinne Rebirth. Nagato is later modified with Hashirama’s and Madara’s cells as the Akatsuki seeks a counter to Ren 348 353 365.
  • Nanami Uchiha — The Fourth Squad commander who stands against Madara after his escape, wielding Ryūjin Jakka to defend the Inner Court until Ren’s intervention 362 364 366.
  • The Uchiha clan — Madara once led the clan but considers those who stayed in Konoha traitors. He comes to acknowledge their growth under Ren, even while attacking their home. His defeat provokes the clan’s confrontation with the Akatsuki, while his use as a displayed chakra source deepens his resentment 263 283 289 314 315 356.

Story Role / Major Arcs

  • Early summoning: Obito and Black Zetsu revive Madara before his planned Rinne Rebirth to counter Ren. Angered by the change, he becomes interested when he learns that Ren defeated a reanimated Hashirama 261 262.
  • Investigation of the modern Uchiha: Reports of the Shrine’s thirteen squads, cultivation methods, and Kumogakure victory lead Madara to investigate the clan himself. He opens all seven Inner Court gates, triggering its highest welcoming ceremony 265 266 270 277.
  • Battle in the Inner Court: Madara attacks the clan’s defenses, battles its fighters, and confronts Ren. Ren’s Spiral Sword pierces Madara’s Susanoo, Wood Golem, and body, planting a Petrification Seal that traps him in stone 283 289 304 305.
  • Consequences of his defeat: News that the Akatsuki summoned Madara and sent him against the Uchiha residence reaches Konoha’s leadership. Ren’s anger over the attack leads the Uchiha Shrine to issue a ten-day ultimatum against the organization 314 315.
  • Escape: After more than ten days of captivity and chakra drainage, Madara breaks free with Black Zetsu’s aid. Weakened but still dangerous, he resumes attacking the Inner Court while its defenders seek Ren’s return 356 357 362.
  • Second confrontation and Rinnegan revelation: Nanami attempts to defend the Inner Court, but Ren appears and catches Madara’s Susanoo blade with one hand. Madara and Black Zetsu are shocked by Ren’s Rinnegan as he absorbs and shatters the weapon. Madara also learns that Obito used his cells to modify Nagato without permission and vows to remember the debt 364 365 366 367.
  • Clone discovery and retreat: Madara notices irregularities in the apparent Ren’s chakra after it takes hits and identifies the opponent as a Yin–Yang Release Shadow Clone. Ren reveals elsewhere that Madara’s release was deliberately allowed to draw Black Zetsu out. Unable to regain the initiative, Madara acknowledges that Ren has won; he and Black Zetsu break through the remaining barrier and flee, while Ren’s clone prevents the Temple captains from pursuing them 368 369 370.
  • Unfulfilled true resurrection: During the later period of peace, Obito attempts to revive Madara with the Rinnegan but fails, leaving the intended return to a living body unrealized 401.
