History
A reacted furiously when the Uchiha killed Kumogakure’s envoy Lei Zang and declared war. His advisers warned him about Ren’s Mangekyō Sharingan and the Uchiha’s history, but he remained confident in his own speed and strength 47. Dismissing the elders’ fear of Madara’s legacy, he mobilized Kumogakure’s elite forces and announced his intention to kill Ren and seize the clan’s Sharingan 48. Despite his public contempt for the enemy, he halted his army’s advance when he learned that the Uchiha were approaching, ordering defensive preparations against their large-scale lightning technique 49.
During the Uchiha campaign against Kumogakure, A charged through the Uchiha Shrine’s lightning bombardment to reach its forces. He cut apart an enormous Kirin created by the Shrine’s coordinated formation, briefly restoring his troops’ morale 52 53. Ren subsequently overpowered A and the Eight-Tails, and Kumogakure surrendered 104 149.
During his initial confrontation with Ren, the wounded A angrily protested the extraordinary nature of Ren’s abilities. Ren’s overwhelming feats and claims of descent from the Sage of Six Paths began to unsettle A’s skepticism 57. A later pushed his Lightning Release Armor into an extreme burst mode that damaged his body and endangered his life. When Ren repelled his assault and released an overwhelming surge of chakra, A ordered the surviving Kumogakure shinobi to retreat 60.
A and his brother Killer B later developed a counterstrategy. Using the Eight-Tails’ chakra as a protective cloak, they fought in smaller, more mobile forms and timed their attacks for the moments when Ren became tangible. The approach kept Ren occupied, though he retained the initiative 104 105.
Following Kumogakure’s defeat, A resisted Ren’s demands for the village’s complete Lightning Release Armor training materials and the technical details of the Heavenly Transfer Technique. Nevertheless, Kumogakure’s shattered defenses and depleted military left him without meaningful leverage. A, the Land of Lightning’s envoy, and Darui signed a treaty imposing reparations, commercial privileges, Uchiha access to Kumogakure’s missions, and recognition of the Uchiha clan head’s status as comparable to a daimyo. Mabui and Samui were also assigned as liaison officers for Uchiha trade operations 111. The surrender required 678 billion ryo in cash, materials, and supplies 129.
After the war, A ordered an intensive investigation into the Uchiha’s rapidly growing number of Kage-level fighters. On Darui’s advice, Kumogakure examined the clan’s public businesses and supply networks because its guarded Inner Court was too difficult to infiltrate 327.
The investigation followed reports that the Uchiha possessed seventeen Kage-level fighters and might have discovered a method for rapidly producing more. Kumogakure’s leaders were interested in acquiring such a method themselves. Their inquiries uncovered Uchiha interests in railways, trade, cement, steel, construction, spiritual-item collection, and electric lighting. Darui estimated that approximately one person in twelve across the Lands of Fire and Lightning either worked for Uchiha businesses or had relatives who depended on them, revealing the clan’s extensive social and economic influence 327.
When the Seireitei Conference was announced, A recognized that the Uchiha were no longer merely a powerful military opponent: their Rinnegan, businesses, resources, and Shrine forces gave them influence over nearly every aspect of the shinobi world. He questioned whether the other nations’ daimyo would attend, while Darui explained that some still regarded shinobi as hired tools and did not understand Ren’s strength 376.
A subsequently traveled to Konoha and accepted an Uchiha escort into the clan’s territory. He noticed the escorts’ powerful chakra and imposing captains before entering the completed conference hall. Seated beside Darui, he surveyed an unprecedented gathering of all five great villages’ leaders, the nations’ daimyo, nobles, officials, merchant representatives, and leaders of smaller villages 382.
At the conference, Darui explained that reluctant dignitaries had received visits from Uchiha operatives who demonstrated their strength without injuring anyone. A reacted angrily but understood the coercive purpose of these visits. Ren’s spatial entrance, advanced electronic display, and revealed Rinnegan further demonstrated the Uchiha’s superiority. A remained outwardly controlled while recognizing the overwhelming gap between Ren and the assembled leaders 383.
Personality
A is fiercely protective of Kumogakure’s shinobi: when urged to wait during the Uchiha bombardment, he angrily refused to leave his subordinates exposed 51. He initially believed a Raikage should prevail through his own fists, but accepted B and Gyūki’s help when doing so offered a better way to defend the village 105.
His pride and aggression initially led him to dismiss warnings about Ren and the Uchiha, including his elders’ fear of Madara’s legacy 47 48. However, his confidence does not entirely override practical judgment: he prepared defenses against the Uchiha’s lightning attacks and ordered his troops to withdraw when Ren’s power escalated beyond their ability to resist 49 60.
A remains resentful of Uchiha dominance, resisting the surrender treaty’s demands and reacting angrily to the pressure used to secure attendance at the Seireitei Conference. Nevertheless, he can acknowledge unfavorable circumstances and restrain himself when confrontation offers no realistic advantage 111 383.
Abilities & Skills
Lightning Release Armor
- Grants A exceptional speed, striking power, and defense; he charged through the Shrine’s bombardment while protected by it 52 53.
- Pushing the armor too hard damages his body, limiting how long he can sustain it unaided 104.
- His extreme burst mode increases speed, strength, and reflexes at the cost of severe bodily damage and potentially his life 60.
- Obito described A as having mastered the highest level of Lightning Release Chakra Mode, with speed, strength, and defense at the pinnacle of Kage level. He also regarded A’s speed as among the best in the shinobi world 267.
- Despite this speed, A could not keep pace with Ren’s attacks when Ren used Idaten 162.
Eight-Tails Cloak Combination
- B supplies A with a close-fitting cloak of Eight-Tails chakra. It absorbs damage and rapidly mends injuries, allowing A to use his Lightning Release Armor more aggressively 104.
- Working together, A pressures Ren from the front while B attacks his flanks. They hold back when Ren turns intangible and strike when he becomes tangible again 104 105.
- A uses the cloak and Lightning Release Armor in layers, absorbing an attack’s initial impact with the cloak before deflecting the remaining force with his lightning armor. This allowed him to withstand a blow from Ren without being sent flying 104.
- Obito assessed the brothers’ combined defense, recovery, and sustained combat ability as standing at the peak among contemporary shinobi, with overall combat strength far beyond ordinary Kage-level fighters 267.
Physical Resilience
- Ren praised A’s resilience, noting that an ordinary shinobi’s internal organs would have been shattered by the first punch A endured 58.
- Tsunade acknowledged A’s physical strength and stated that even she could not confidently claim an easy victory over him when his Lightning Release Armor was pushed to its limit 139.
Tactical Judgment
- A prepares countermeasures against known enemy techniques despite publicly projecting confidence 49.
- He adapted to his earlier defeat by accepting B’s chakra support and coordinating attacks around Ren’s periods of tangibility rather than wasting effort against his intangible body 104 105.
- As village leader, he authorized investigations into the Uchiha’s military growth and economic networks, adopting Darui’s recommendation to study publicly accessible businesses instead of attempting to penetrate the Inner Court directly 327.
Power Progression
| Chapter | Development or Demonstrated State | Effects and Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| 52–53 | Lightning Release Armor demonstrated against the Uchiha Shrine | Charged through the Shrine’s lightning bombardment and used a lightning-infused blade to cut apart its enormous Kirin 52 53. |
| 60 | Extreme burst mode | Greatly increased speed, strength, and reflexes, but inflicted severe physical damage and risked his life; Ren ultimately repelled the assault 60. |
| 104–105 | Eight-Tails cloak combined with Lightning Release Armor | Gained additional protection and rapid healing, allowing more aggressive armor use and improved endurance. Coordinated timing with B enabled them to pressure Ren when he became tangible 104 105. |
| 267 | Retrospective assessment of peak combat capabilities | Obito described A’s Chakra Mode as the highest level, placing his speed, strength, and defense at the pinnacle of Kage level. With B’s support, their combined combat strength surpassed ordinary Kage-level fighters; this was an assessment of existing abilities rather than a newly reported advancement 267. |
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Lightning-infused blade — A used it to slash apart the Shrine Formation’s Kirin 53.
Relationships
- Killer B — A’s brother and combat partner. B urged him to retreat to preserve Kumogakure’s leadership, but A refused to abandon him 68 105. B devised the shared Eight-Tails cloak strategy after studying their earlier defeat, compensating for the bodily damage caused by A’s Lightning Release Armor 104.
- Gyūki — Provides the Eight-Tails chakra that B shares with A as protective armor 104 105.
- Uchiha Ren — Battlefield opponent who defeated A and helped compel Kumogakure’s surrender 104 149. A reluctantly signed Ren’s treaty and later investigated the sources of the Uchiha’s growing strength 111 327. At the Seireitei Conference, he recognized Ren’s overwhelming superiority while remaining resentful of the Uchiha’s coercion 383.
- Darui — Kumogakure subordinate who advised A on how to investigate the Uchiha’s resources 327. He signed the surrender treaty alongside A and later accompanied him at the Seireitei Conference, explaining the Uchiha pressure campaign against reluctant attendees 111 382 383.
- Mabui and Samui — Kumogakure personnel assigned to Uchiha trade liaison duties under the surrender treaty A signed. The agreement prevented Kumogakure from recalling them or secretly employing them against the Uchiha 111.
