Ch. 301Klein Plays a Navy Admiral
Plot points and events
- Odys negotiates with the navy for promotions and pay for his crew, repairs to the captured cruiser, and permission to call himself a “Pirate Admiral.” Admiral Amelius agrees, though Odys will have a bounty placed on him. Odys also receives a crystal that lets Amelius sense his location within Loen-controlled waters.
- At Amelius’s banquet, Klein—working as the admiral’s Substitute—spots Odys, while Odys recognizes Klein after he takes Amelius’s appearance. Their contrasting fortunes at the feast provide comic relief: Odys eats freely, while Klein is repeatedly prevented from reaching the food.
- The next day, Odys investigates an intelligence report about a dead man who apparently returned to life and participated in a brutal massacre. He identifies the likely culprit as a Rose School Zombie and suspects the crime was staged to draw attention.
- Odys investigates the crime scene and discovers a Wraith keeping watch. Rather than engage, he reports the discovery to Tim, who takes him to “Amelius”—Klein in disguise.
- Klein orders an investigation and, after divination rules out a Demi-God, agrees to lead a joint operation involving the navy, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Storm Church. Odys argues that the Rose School’s apparent crime is a performance and recommends surveillance before moving in.
- The officials adopt Odys’s plan, keeping him away from the front line. While watching from a café, Odys spots Leona, a member of the Life School, and realizes the Rose School staged the incident to lure the Life School into the open. He approaches her and proposes bringing her to Amelius so their plans can be coordinated.
Character developments
- Odys shows political skill, investigative ability, and caution. He builds ties with the navy, correctly reads the Rose School’s trap, and uses intelligence rather than rushing into combat. He also begins training Aaron in evaluating reports.
- Klein demonstrates the strain and absurdity of impersonating a powerful admiral: he must maintain Amelius’s manner, navigate a command structure, and lead an operation despite limited experience. His divination helps him decide it is safe to take command.
- Aaron begins developing as an intelligence operative under Odys’s guidance.
- Leona reappears as an active Life School investigator, following her teacher’s instructions.
Significant themes
- Identity and impersonation: Klein’s Faceless ability lets him convincingly replace Amelius, but the role brings social and military obligations he cannot simply avoid.
- Information and inference: Odys turns scattered reports and small clues into a workable theory, while the officials debate how much evidence is enough to act.
- Power and responsibility: Klein must exercise authority convincingly; Odys wants the authorities’ strength against the Rose School but tries to avoid being placed on the front line.
- Factional conflict and manipulation: The Rose School’s crime is bait intended to expose the Life School, making the operation a contest of hidden motives rather than a straightforward arrest.
- Comedic contrast: Odys enjoys the banquet while “Admiral Amelius” Klein is trapped by protocol and paperwork.
