Ch. 321The Constantine Family
Plot and key events
Odys, Klein (posing as Gehrman Sparrow), and Alger meet Vice Admiral Deep Sea, Howl Constantine, on Whale Island. Howl explains that a strange rock is mutating local creatures and that similar sources of contamination lie beneath the sea. He wants the group’s help dealing with the monsters so he can destroy it.
Odys agrees only in exchange for answers. Howl reveals that the rock carries an Outer Deity’s “Gift”—power that can grant Beyonder abilities without Beyonder characteristics—and that prolonged exposure can draw people toward the Outer Deity. He also confirms he belongs to the Constantine Family, an Angel Family that once supported the Trunsoest Empire and whose Angel was a member of the Moses Ascetic Order’s secret Ten Pillars. The family later left the Order over an ideological disagreement and has continued opposing Outer Deity influence.
The group tries to destroy the rock with Odys’s Beyonder Machine Gun. It wounds the rock, but its response creates a powerful gravitational pull that drags people, debris, and even the gun toward it. Odys escapes the danger by detonating an Explosion Scroll. Back on the beach, he proposes a ranged attack and assembles a Portable Spirit Wave Cannon. Its blast devastates much of the island and greatly damages the rock, though the rock remains active. Impressed, Howl asks whether Odys will sell him the cannon.
Character developments and interactions
- Odys shows himself to be practical, inquisitive, and unwilling to let others exploit his good intentions. He negotiates payment, probes Howl about the Constantine Family, and quickly adapts when the first attack fails.
- Howl Constantine is revealed as a member of a secretive family devoted to resisting Outer Deity contamination. Initially cautious, he cooperates with the group, pays generously for the damaged machine gun, and becomes impressed by Odys’s weaponry.
- Klein and Alger support Odys’s decisions without breaking their respective personas. Both privately wonder about the Moses Ascetic Order’s Ten Pillars and the Constantine Family’s history, but neither presses Howl for answers.
- Howl’s crew, previously unaware of their captain’s family background, are astonished by the revelations and later by the power of Odys’s weapons. The weapon demonstrations shift the group’s focus from negotiation to survival and then to the prospect of acquiring advanced arms.
Significant themes
- The danger of forbidden knowledge: Information about the contamination’s source may itself expose people to it.
- Resistance to cosmic corruption: The Constantine Family’s history suggests a long struggle against Outer Deity influence, though its connection to the Moses Ascetic Order’s schism remains uncertain.
- Pragmatism and fair exchange: Odys insists that noble motives do not justify expecting unpaid help.
- Technology and escalation: Odys’s weapons offer powerful solutions, but the rock’s gravitational response shows that force alone can provoke greater danger.
