Ch. 261Azik and Silica

Plot points and events

  • Qilingus, fleeing through the air, is trapped by a supernatural attack: rising dark water and a swarm of enormous skeletal creatures. He uses the glove’s Holy Light to destroy the first skeletons, but more than a hundred appear. When the confrontation ends, Qilingus is dead, and the glove is gone.
  • In a Backlund inn, Azik examines the stolen glove and experiences a painful fragment of memory: he thinks he once worked with “them.” Silica, a small silver-feathered bird, emerges from hiding and feels an inexplicable closeness to him. Azik recognizes the handwriting in the name “Silica” as his own, and briefly recalls a black-haired girl clinging to him, but the memory brings him pain. Silica calms him with her scented potion.
  • Silica explains that she is helping Abner track Qilingus. Azik recognizes Abner Brain as the Hero Detective and asks Silica to take him to meet Abner, hoping he can help recover his memories. She agrees, and they enter the Spirit World.
  • At Duke Negan’s residence, guests discuss Abner’s apparent heroism during the assassination attempt. Emma privately compares his perceptiveness unfavorably with her own. Audrey hears that Abner escorted Miss Macht home and worries he may be fickle, considering whether to warn Xio.
  • Audrey’s father tells her Qilingus has been killed and that the Church of Storms is speculating about the killer. Audrey suspects Mr. Fool’s blessed was responsible. Earl Hall cautions her against curiosity about secret organizations, then reveals she has earned a large bounty and a valuable holiday estate for her contribution.
  • Audrey realizes that publicly accepting the reward could expose her Tarot Club identity. Earl Hall agrees to keep her role secret, arrange for someone else to claim the bounty, and privately compensate her. He also plans to redirect public attention toward Abner by having reporters highlight the Hero Detective.

Character developments and interactions

  • Azik gains a possible clue to his lost past, while his pain and recognition of Silica suggest a meaningful connection between them. He responds warmly to her, and she instinctively cares for him.
  • Silica balances her affection for Azik with her mission for Abner. Her name and handwriting become a link to Azik’s memories.
  • Audrey shows excitement about the secret supernatural events but also prudence: she protects her Tarot Club identity and accepts her father’s help. Her concern about Abner’s relationship with Xio reflects her personal interest in his reputation.
  • Earl Hall protects Audrey while using his influence to conceal her role and publicly reward Abner.
  • Emma feels frustrated that she failed to detect Qilingus’s plot, while Abner succeeded; other young noblewomen gossip about Abner’s escort of Miss Macht.

Significant themes

  • Memory and identity: Azik’s fragmentary recollections and Silica’s name hint at a shared past.
  • Secrecy and protection: Audrey must conceal her involvement to safeguard her identity and associates.
  • Perception and competence: Emma’s doubts about her abilities contrast with Abner’s success in uncovering the threat.
  • Public recognition versus hidden truth: Abner is set to receive public credit, while Audrey’s actual contribution remains concealed.

Ch. 262Meeting Azik

Key plot points and events

  • After Qilingus’s death, Duke Negan’s circle concludes that his killer was likely a High Sequence Beyonder. They begin coordinating with the churches, military, and intelligence services to identify the stranger and learn his motives.
  • Duke Negan learns that Abner helped save guests when a chandelier fell. To reward him, the duke orders his secretary, Lockhard, to buy back Abner’s former family home, lost after the Grain Act drove his family into bankruptcy. He also arranges for the international bounties on Qilingus to go to Miss Hall.
  • Lockhard suspects Miss Hall may be connected to Qilingus’s powerful killer and plans to use his control of the bounty payment to track where the money goes.
  • Abner returns home after escorting Hazel and her family to safety. He accepts the public credit for the chandelier rescue, partly because Hazel’s family wants to avoid drawing attention to her.
  • Abner finds Azik Eggers in his study, reading an investigation report Abner had prepared. Azik confirms his identity, thanks Abner for helping him recover memories and investigate his origins, and recognizes that Abner was working for someone they both know. As Abner speaks with him, the Keeper of Knowledge potion finishes digesting.
  • In the Dock Borough, Jane and Cattleya postpone their planned operation because of unusually heavy police patrols. Their intended target, Baron Kangwa, remains absorbed in mathematical work.

Character developments and interactions

  • Duke Negan shows gratitude toward Abner and prefers to reward him materially, while also recognizing Miss Hall’s role in saving his life.
  • Lockhard appears dutiful but is quietly opportunistic, treating the bounty payment as a chance to investigate Miss Hall’s possible ties to the killer.
  • Abner accepts recognition he would normally avoid, reflecting a possible step forward in his standing. He also carefully conceals how much he already knows about Azik.
  • Azik is gentle and apologetic, but his meeting with Abner has clear significance for his effort to rediscover his past. Silica’s enthusiastic approval—and interest in Abner’s concoction—helps ease the encounter.
  • Jane and Cattleya act cautiously, abandoning their plan rather than risk an operation under increased police scrutiny.

Significant themes

  • Recognition and reward: Abner’s public reputation grows, and the duke’s offer of his former home suggests that recognition may bring practical restoration as well.
  • Hidden motives and surveillance: Lockhard’s suspicions and the investigation into Qilingus’s killer show how public events conceal private agendas.
  • Memory and identity: Azik’s gratitude centers on recovering memories and uncovering his origins, while the report links his search to Abner’s work.
  • Caution amid uncertainty: Both the authorities and Jane and Cattleya respond to an unexplained change in circumstances by gathering information or postponing action.

Ch. 263Azik's Gratitude

Chapter Summary: “Azik’s Gratitude”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Abner meets with Mr. Azik, who has come to his villa accompanied by Silica. The information and materials Abner previously provided have helped Azik regain fragments of his lost memories and have allowed Abner to fully digest his Keeper of Knowledge potion.
  • Abner explains that Azik appears connected to the Corpse Collector Pathway, whose Sequence 4, Undying, involves dying and reviving every sixty years while losing most memories. Azik recognizes the description but believes he may have already advanced beyond that stage, leaving the cause of his condition unresolved.
  • Azik reveals that his main purpose is to investigate Silica’s history, both before and after her death. Abner tells him that Silica explored an ancient castle in Ramd Town, encountered the Sanguine Viscount Karen, and later became Karen’s messenger.
  • Azik is disturbed by the idea that Silica—whom he increasingly suspects may have been his daughter in a past life—is bound to another person, even though her contract appears lenient. He wants to meet Karen directly.
  • As thanks for Abner’s help and as payment for assistance, Azik offers him a sealed glove relic belonging to the pirate admiral Abner is pursuing. The glove is revealed to be Creeping Hunger, a powerful but dangerous sealed artifact that must be fed human flesh, blood, and soul after use.
  • Abner refuses the artifact and instead asks Azik for help with another matter requiring a high-sequence Corpse Collector Beyonder. Azik agrees. Silica remains happily occupied with Abner’s Book of the Dead “aromatherapy.”
  • In Tingen, Aisha, the sister of deceased Senator Maynard, rejects the police report claiming her sister died from excessive drinking and debauchery. With Lina’s encouragement, Aisha and her mother decide to hire the “mercenaries” who previously rescued Elliott Vicroel to investigate the death. Lina appears pleased by the opportunity.
  • The next morning, Abner takes back the Book of the Dead and reseals it. Azik warns that Silica should only be exposed to it for limited periods because of its unusual aura.
  • Azik confirms that he did not create or write the Book of the Dead, but senses that its lingering power is strangely similar to his own. This raises the possibility that the book is connected to another incarnation of the Underworld Emperor, perhaps Jane’s ancestor.

Character Developments

  • Abner becomes increasingly successful as a detective and Beyonder. His research into Azik’s condition completes the digestion of his potion, while his strategic manipulation of events shows his growing pragmatism. He also plans to make use of Azik’s gratitude for future assistance.
  • Azik regains partial memories and gains a clearer understanding of his possible connection to the Undying sequence. His protective feelings toward Silica intensify as he suspects she may have been his daughter in a former life.
  • Silica remains cheerful and curious, enjoying the Book of the Dead and happily discussing her relationship with Karen. Her comfort around Abner and Azik suggests she trusts both of them.
  • Lina presents herself as a compassionate teacher supporting Aisha, but her subtle satisfaction and calculated advice suggest she may have ulterior motives.
  • Aisha and Mrs. Maynard move from grief and frustration to actively pursuing an independent investigation into Senator Maynard’s suspicious death.

Significant Themes

  • Memory, identity, and reincarnation: Azik’s repeated deaths and revivals raise questions about whether a person’s identity persists despite lost memories and changed lives.
  • Debt and reciprocity: Abner’s assistance to Azik creates an alliance based on gratitude, while Abner consciously considers how to exploit that goodwill.
  • Parental protection and emotional bonds: Azik’s reaction to Silica’s status as Karen’s messenger reveals a strong, possibly familial attachment despite his incomplete memories.
  • Hidden truths versus official narratives: The false or inadequate police explanation of Maynard’s death contrasts with the characters’ determination to uncover the truth.
  • Dangerous knowledge and artifacts: The Book of the Dead and Creeping Hunger demonstrate that supernatural power can be useful while carrying severe risks.
  • Unresolved historical connections: The Book of the Dead’s aura suggests links between Azik, the Underworld Emperor, and ancient figures connected to Jane.

Important Character Interactions

  • Abner and Azik: Their conversation combines professional investigation, mutual respect, and concealed motives. Abner offers knowledge, while Azik expresses gratitude and agrees to help him in return.
  • Azik and Silica: Azik treats Silica with notable tenderness, increasingly viewing her as a possible daughter from a previous life.
  • Azik and Karen: Although they do not meet in the chapter, Azik’s discomfort with Karen’s contract with Silica establishes a likely future confrontation or negotiation.
  • Abner and Silica: Abner indulges Silica with the Book of the Dead while inwardly treating her enjoyment as part of his broader plans.
  • Lina, Aisha, and Mrs. Maynard: Lina guides the grieving family toward hiring outside investigators, appearing helpful while subtly revealing her own satisfaction with the arrangement.

Ch. 264Ambush

Chapter Summary: “Ambush”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Fors and Xio learn from the newspapers that the pirate admiral Qilingos has been killed in Backlund. He had disguised himself as Baron Gramir and attempted to assassinate Duke Negan, but Abner detected the disguise and helped the duke’s bodyguard prepare an ambush.
  • The newspapers also greatly exaggerate Abner’s heroism, praising him for supporting a falling chandelier and saving the ballroom from panic.
  • Fors and Xio realize that the authorities’ major operation the previous night was connected to Qilingos. They suspect their own actions may have contributed to forcing him into making such a reckless move.
  • Fors worries about whether Audrey will still pay them for their commission, since they did not directly complete it. She and Xio agree not to contact Audrey immediately, fearing that the circumstances surrounding Qilingos’s death could still create danger.
  • Xio notices Miss Sharron signaling her through reflections in shop windows. She separates from Fors under the pretense of meeting her MI9 contact.
  • Fors soon suspects that Xio is concealing something dangerous and returns to investigate, but Xio has already disappeared. Fors decides to seek Abner’s help.
  • Xio follows Sharron to a restaurant, where Jane explains that the assassination plan has changed. With help from an important and powerful ally, they have located Baron Kangwa and intend to ambush him immediately.
  • Xio agrees to lure Kangwa to a designated location, provided that the contract is formally notarized again. Sharron’s presence reassures her that she can escape if necessary.
  • The group travels toward a library in the North Borough, which will serve as the concealed battlefield. Xio secretly prays to Mr. Fool for protection.
  • The chapter ends with Klein in Tingen learning of Qilingos’s death from the newspaper and ironically realizing that, despite being the mastermind, he discovered the result only through public reports.

Character Developments

  • Fors shows growing caution and responsibility. Although she jokes about Abner’s fame and their potential reward, she recognizes the danger of acting rashly and advises Xio not to contact Audrey prematurely. Her concern for Xio deepens when she realizes Xio may be hiding a dangerous mission.
  • Xio becomes more confident and strategically capable. She quickly understands the implications of the ambush, negotiates for a renewed contract, and calmly accepts the risk of acting as bait. Her faith in the Tarot Club and Mr. Fool also grows, especially as she considers using it to solve her father’s death.
  • Abner gains substantial public fame after seeing through Qilingos’s disguise and helping prevent disaster at the duke’s ball. Though he does not appear directly, his reputation becomes a major topic of discussion.
  • Miss Sharron remains mysterious and powerful. She deliberately draws Xio’s attention, suggesting that she is actively guiding or protecting her.
  • Jane demonstrates efficiency and authority in organizing the revised operation. Her positive assessment of Xio confirms Xio’s value to Abner and the group.
  • Klein is shown from an ironic distance: although he orchestrated events leading to Qilingos’s death, he has no direct knowledge of the outcome and must rely on newspaper reports.

Significant Themes

  • Hidden influence and indirect consequences: Qilingos’s death is the result of multiple concealed plans and alliances. The public sees only a simplified story, while the true causes remain secret.
  • The gap between truth and public reputation: Newspapers turn Abner into a heroic celebrity while concealing the deeper supernatural and political circumstances behind the incident.
  • Trust and secrecy: Fors and Xio care deeply about each other, but Xio’s decision to conceal the mission creates tension. Their relationship balances loyalty with the dangers of revealing too much.
  • Growing reliance on the Tarot Club: Xio increasingly views the Tarot Club and Mr. Fool as a source of protection and a means of resolving personal problems.
  • Risk, contracts, and accountability: Xio’s insistence on notarizing the agreement again emphasizes the importance of formal guarantees when supernatural missions become dangerous.
  • Irony of control: Klein’s position as the hidden mastermind contrasts sharply with his lack of direct information, highlighting how even powerful planners can lose sight of events once set in motion.

Character Interactions

  • Fors and Xio discuss Qilingos’s death, Abner’s publicity, and the possibility of receiving payment from Audrey. Their banter reveals their friendship, while their later separation exposes Fors’s protective concern.
  • Xio and Sharron communicate indirectly through reflections, with Sharron guiding Xio to the new meeting without openly revealing herself.
  • Xio and Jane renegotiate the mission. Xio demonstrates caution by demanding a new notarized contract, and Jane respects her professionalism.
  • Xio, Jane, and Sharron prepare to cooperate in the ambush against Baron Kangwa, with Xio serving as bait and Sharron acting as a powerful safeguard.
  • Fors and Abner do not meet in the chapter, but Fors considers seeking his assistance after becoming suspicious of Xio’s disappearance.
  • Klein and the wider plot are connected indirectly: his hidden actions have produced Qilingos’s death, yet he remains separated from the immediate aftermath.

Ch. 265Prelude

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Klein reads reports of Vice Admiral Hurricane Qilingos’s death and suspects the government is concealing important details. He concludes that Mr. Azik likely killed Qilingos and survived the confrontation, while The Tower may have avoided direct involvement because she possesses a powerful mystical artifact.
  • Klein plans to contact Mr. Azik if he receives no updates by midnight, but he is soon interrupted by a prayer from Miss Judgment.
  • Abner rejects Mr. Azik’s offer of the Creeping Hunger and instead asks for his help against Baron Kangwa, whose goal is connected to the power of Sefirah Castle and a mysterious entity sleeping in Calderón City.
  • Before Abner can carry out his planned ritual, Fors arrives in distress because of Xio’s abnormal behavior. Abner secretly prays to Mr. Fool, asking to establish a private communication channel between himself and Miss Judgment.
  • Klein enters the gray fog from a public restroom and receives Miss Judgment’s prayer. She has apparently joined several unfamiliar Beyonders to confront the dangerous Monster connected to the earlier incident. Klein worries that her actions are reckless and that the Monster may be tracking his aura.
  • The Tower also contacts Klein, requesting another “video call” function. Klein grants the request and secretly listens in on the conversation between The Tower and Judgment.
  • Meanwhile, Baron Kangwa continues researching in a library. Mrs. Austin detects the presence of Sefirah Castle’s aura nearby. She transforms into a terrifying black-mist form and attacks him, causing black spots to spread across his body and driving him into madness.

Character Developments

  • Klein becomes more confident in assessing the strength and motives of Tarot Club members. He demonstrates increased concern for their safety, especially Miss Judgment, while maintaining his cautious, analytical approach.
  • Abner shows strategic intelligence and secrecy. He attempts to manipulate circumstances so that Baron Kangwa can be lured into a trap involving Sefirah Castle’s aura, while concealing his connection to Mr. Fool from Mr. Azik.
  • Fors appears anxious and hurried because of Xio’s strange behavior, prompting Abner to abandon his original plan temporarily.
  • Miss Judgment is revealed to be taking significant risks by confronting the Monster with people she does not know well, suggesting courage but also impulsiveness.
  • The Tower continues to display technical and mystical ingenuity by creating improved communication methods, reinforcing her image as an exceptionally capable Beyonder.
  • Mrs. Austin undergoes a frightening transformation and turns against Baron Kangwa, while Kangwa loses control and descends into madness under her attack.

Significant Themes

  • Concealed truth and unreliable information: The government’s abbreviated report on Qilingos’s death suggests deliberate suppression of dangerous or politically sensitive facts.
  • Secrecy and layered identities: Abner, Klein, and the Tarot Club members must conceal their powers, affiliations, and methods even from allies.
  • Trust versus recklessness: The members rely on one another, but Miss Judgment’s decision to act with unfamiliar companions highlights the dangers of incomplete coordination.
  • Power, corruption, and madness: Baron Kangwa’s pursuit of Sefirah Castle and Austin’s horrifying transformation show how contact with higher powers can lead to loss of control.
  • Growing sophistication of the Tarot Club: Their communication abilities, cooperation, and individual resources continue to develop, allowing them to coordinate across great distances.

Character Interactions

  • Klein reflects on The Tower’s relationship to Qilingos and compares her abilities with those of other powerful figures.
  • Abner negotiates with Mr. Azik for assistance against Baron Kangwa, while carefully hiding his allegiance to Mr. Fool.
  • Fors’s arrival disrupts Abner’s plans and indirectly leads him to contact Klein.
  • Klein receives prayers from Miss Judgment and The Tower, then connects them so they can communicate privately while he listens unseen.
  • Mrs. Austin, previously associated with Baron Kangwa, suddenly attacks him, transforming their relationship from cooperation or servitude into violent betrayal.

Ch. 266Interlude

Key plot points and events

  • Abner and Xio meet through the Fool’s gray-fog realm. Abner infers that Xio and Jane are pursuing the escaped Baron Kangwa, likely using Xio as bait, and confirms that they are near the Yefana Library.
  • Xio says an important ally is arranging a Hidden Space. Abner warns her that the baron and the spirit within him may be contaminated by an unknown underground source, then heads to her location.
  • At the villa, Fors offers to accompany Abner, but he refuses, concerned about the cost of her bracelet and confident he can travel with Mr. Azik’s help. Azik transports him through a strange, vivid, painting-like space.
  • Xio passes Abner’s warning to someone through a mirror. Sharron appears unexpectedly, confirms that the warning is known, and abruptly spirits Xio away to a peach-blossom forest after sensing an unusual move by “that man.”

Character developments and interactions

  • Abner demonstrates sharp deduction and concern for Xio and Jane, recognizing why they kept their plan from him. He acts to support them while warning of a deeper threat.
  • Xio is exposed in her more authentic appearance, unlike her carefully disguised Tarot Club persona. Though surprised by Abner’s knowledge, she accepts his warning and remains alert.
  • Fors shows loyalty and willingness to risk herself, while Abner protects her from the bracelet’s potential cost.
  • Mr. Azik helps Abner travel quickly and shares a brief, playful exchange with him.
  • Sharron acts decisively to protect or remove Xio, suggesting danger is imminent. Her sudden appearance bypasses Xio’s predictive ring.

Significant themes

  • Trust and protection: Characters conceal plans or take risks to shield one another, even when those choices may cause worry.
  • Deduction and hidden identities: Abner pieces together the secret mission, while Xio’s disguise highlights the gap between public presentation and reality.
  • Escalating supernatural danger: The suspected underground contamination—and Klein’s association of it with the power of the Fallen—hints at a threat beyond Baron Kangwa himself.

Ch. 267Soldiers and the Game

Plot points and events

  • Baron Kangwa senses Sefirah Castle nearby and pursues it, but is trapped in an artificial peach grove.
  • Unable to break through the space, he reaches a village of exquisitely made dolls and attacks them. A toy soldier’s simple rifle briefly hurts him because it embodies protection, courage, and steadfast resolve.
  • The baron kills the soldier, but another appears. Bernadette explains that the soldiers’ protective will is the fairy-tale magic “The Steadfast Tin Soldier.”
  • The baron spreads Black Spots onto a soldier, corrupting its will. The resulting fallen soldier and its original destroy one another, and the original does not return. He then wrecks the village.
  • Bernadette judges that Sharron and Xio cannot safely confront the baron. She tells Jane they should wait for his state to weaken, since the contamination cannot sustain itself indefinitely without its source.
  • Instead of acting immediately, Bernadette invites Jane to play a board game. Jane admits she does not know the rules, and Bernadette begins explaining that connecting five stones wins.

Character developments and interactions

  • Baron Kangwa appears increasingly deranged and destructive. His Black Knight abilities prove ineffective against the artificial space, while the Black Spots let him corrupt even unusually pure, protective wills.
  • Jane recognizes how dangerous the Black Spots truly are after seeing them overcome the soldier. She briefly wonders how Abner removed Xio’s contamination, but respects that it is his secret.
  • Bernadette takes charge, calmly explaining the danger and choosing patience over a direct confrontation. She also shares a small personal detail: her father taught her the game.
  • Sharron and Xio remain at the grove’s edge under Bernadette’s direction. Jane asks Bernadette what to do and follows her lead, despite being puzzled by the sudden game.

Significant themes

  • Protection and perseverance: The tin soldiers’ courage makes them a natural counter to the Fallen, and they keep returning so long as their protective will endures.
  • Corruption and vulnerability: Even a pure, unwavering will can be tainted by the Black Spots; goodness is powerful, but not invulnerable.
  • Restraint and strategy: Bernadette recognizes the danger of rushing into battle and waits for the baron’s unsustainable condition to weaken.
  • Contrast between innocence and violence: The peaceful village of dolls becomes a scene of destruction, underscoring the baron’s madness and cruelty.

Ch. 268Gradual Progress

Key plot points and events

  • Jane becomes engrossed in a game with Queen Mystic Bernadette, losing several rounds before Bernadette abruptly stops and says the matter is finished.
  • Baron Kangwa’s stolen body dissolves into black liquid, leaving his head in the grasp of Mrs. Austin’s Evil Spirit. Bernadette seals the liquid in a bottle and uses a golden scroll’s Purification to cleanse the Baron and the spirit.
  • The Baron recalls that the real Austin died exploring ruins; the spirit that returned was an obsession he had separated from himself. He accepts his fate and disappears with the spirit, lamenting that he never finished verifying his theorems. No Beyonder Characteristic remains, and the sealed liquid vanishes from the bottle.
  • Bernadette’s brief divination yields the words “Dream Weaver,” “Trinity Templar,” and “Omnipotence.” Sensing danger, she stops, concluding at least that the young women are safe.
  • In North Borough, Azik catches a small, dormant spirit resembling Baron Kangwa. He suspects it was jointly created by a Trinity Templar and a Dream Weaver, perhaps as part of an experiment. Abner wonders whether powerful forces deliberately allowed the Baron into the ruins.
  • Soon afterward, black liquid reforms in the Baron’s castle ruins, gathers into a stone coffin, and the Baron emerges alive. Confused, he wonders whether he has slept for seven hundred years and whether this is the era of Sefirah Castle.

Character developments and interactions

  • Bernadette demonstrates both formidable control and caution: she purifies the corruption but stops her divination before it can expose her to something dangerous.
  • Baron Kangwa regains painful memories of Austin and expresses regret over both his choices and unfinished research. His apparent destruction is undercut by his later reappearance.
  • Azik recognizes that the Baron’s spirit is unusual and shares his suspicion of a deliberate, high-level experiment with Abner.
  • Abner carefully probes Azik for information while privately considering how powerful the experimenters might be.
  • Jane shifts from anxious observation to being so absorbed in the game that she loses track of events.

Significant themes

  • Uncertain death and identity: The Baron appears purified and gone, yet returns through the castle’s coffin; his spirit may be only an incomplete or artificial remnant.
  • Memory, obsession, and grief: The Baron’s revelation about Austin shows how grief and fixation shaped the spirit he created.
  • Hidden power and dangerous knowledge: Bernadette’s interrupted divination and Abner’s speculation suggest that the events involve forces too dangerous to investigate casually.
  • Experiments beyond human understanding: Azik’s suspicions frame the Baron’s existence as a possible test by an exceptionally powerful being.

Ch. 269Sealed Away

Plot points and events

  • Abner travels with Mr. Azik to the ruins of the Kangwa baron’s castle near Konwa Town. Azik senses danger on the way, but judges the greatest threat has passed.
  • Azik discovers that another Kangwa baron has awakened in the tomb beneath the ruins. He offers Abner two options: destroy the baron, ending the immediate threat but losing the trail to its origin, or seal the ruins temporarily and investigate later.
  • Abner suspects the baron’s existence may involve the combined powers of a Trinity Templar and a Dream Weaver. He also believes the mystery is tied to a larger, possibly personal fate.
  • Choosing to delay the confrontation, Abner agrees to Azik’s plan. Azik creates a powerful seal using his blood, which should hold for up to a year.
  • Before the seal is completed, Azik learns that the captured baron’s spirit wants some of Roselle’s academic works sealed inside with him. Since the spirit has been cooperative, Azik agrees.

Character development and interactions

  • Abner thinks strategically: though curious about the truth, he prefers to postpone a potentially dangerous “fated” encounter and allow time for himself and his allies to grow stronger. He keeps his theories mostly to himself to avoid revealing too much knowledge.
  • Mr. Azik balances caution with curiosity. He is interested in the baron’s origins because they may help restore his memories, but he respects Abner’s choice and uses his remaining power to seal the site.
  • The baron’s spirit is cooperative and makes a request rather than resisting, prompting Azik to show him consideration.
  • Abner’s trust in Azik is tempered by dry humor and skepticism, while their discussion remains calm and collaborative.

Significant themes

  • Fate and choice: Abner suspects the recurring baron mystery is part of a destined encounter, yet deliberately delays it to gain an advantage.
  • Knowledge and restraint: Abner has a promising theory but hides it, recognizing that what he knows could expose him.
  • Risk versus discovery: Destroying the baron would be safer in the short term, while sealing him preserves the chance to uncover the truth.
  • Temporary containment: The seal postpones the danger rather than resolving it, leaving the mystery—and its possible connection to Abner—open.

Ch. 270Aftermath

Chapter Summary: “Aftermath”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Jane and the controlled Hell Admiral Ludwell meet Captain Cattleya at a café after Baron Kangwa’s assassination.
  • Jane reports that Queen Mystic ordered them to leave Backlund immediately. The baron was “purified,” but no Beyonder Characteristic remained.
  • Cattleya is deeply unsettled by Queen Mystic’s message that her fate is not connected to the queen. Her normally imposing pirate-admiral persona briefly gives way to confusion and vulnerability.
  • Cattleya uses an Ancient Hermes spell to seal Ludwell inside a star-patterned scroll after Jane severs her control over him. The café patrons remain unaware of the supernatural event.
  • Later, a sinister man arrives searching for Ludwell, suggesting that the missing Hell Admiral and the aftermath of the assassination may attract further danger.
  • Abner reunites with Xio near the Yefana Library. Xio claims the operation succeeded, while Abner realizes she and Jane deliberately acted without informing him.
  • Abner gives Xio the “Lucky” coin and warns her to consult him before undertaking similarly dangerous actions. He reminds her that Fors will likely discipline her for breaking her promise to avoid reckless behavior.
  • Abner reports the incident to Mr. Fool through the Tarot Club. Klein learns that Baron Kangwa was not permanently destroyed: he revived and has been sealed away. Since the baron may know about the origins of the gray fog and Mr. Fool’s space, Klein intends to question him once he is strong enough.
  • Back at the Blackthorn Security Company, Klein encounters Senator Maynard’s wife and sister. They commission the company to investigate and monitor Madam Sharon, suspecting her of crimes.
  • The women were referred by the tobacco merchant Vicroel, whose son Klein had previously rescued. Captain Dunn accepts the case but amusingly fails to remember the kidnapping incident that established Vicroel’s recommendation.
  • Mr. Azik finishes preparing Baron Kangwa’s seal and returns to the villa.

Character Developments

  • Cattleya: Her emotional dependence on Queen Mystic becomes evident. Her bewildered reaction reveals insecurity beneath her usual confidence and authority.
  • Jane: She remains dutiful and observant, but also shows concern for Cattleya and mild regret that the assassination produced no Beyonder Characteristic. She defends Abner against Cattleya’s mention of his poor reputation.
  • Xio: She continues to display her tendency toward bold, impulsive action despite her growth and experience. She feels guilty about concealing the operation from Abner and panics at the prospect of Fors reprimanding her.
  • Abner: He acts as a responsible mediator, recognizing Xio’s reckless tendencies while choosing not to shield her completely from consequences. He also remains cautious, using the “Lucky” coin and reporting events to Klein.
  • Klein: He becomes increasingly interested in Baron Kangwa’s origins and possible knowledge of the gray fog. His composure is contrasted with his private amusement at Captain Dunn’s forgetfulness.
  • Azik: He continues supporting the group indirectly by transporting Abner and completing the seal on Kangwa.

Significant Themes

  • Uncertain fate and abandonment: Cattleya’s reaction to Queen Mystic’s words emphasizes her anxiety over losing the person she has relied upon and not knowing where her destiny lies.
  • Consequences of reckless action: Xio’s willingness to take risks is treated as both admirable courage and a dangerous flaw. The chapter stresses the need for preparation, communication, and accountability.
  • Incomplete victory: Although Kangwa’s immediate threat has been neutralized, his revival and sealing show that supernatural enemies are rarely eliminated completely.
  • Hidden knowledge and long-term mysteries: Kangwa’s possible connection to the gray fog and Mr. Fool’s origins expands the chapter’s larger mystery.
  • Public normalcy versus hidden supernatural reality: Ludwell’s sealing occurs unnoticed in a crowded café, while ordinary detective work and social scandals continue alongside occult conflicts.

Important Character Interactions

  • Jane and Cattleya: Jane delivers Queen Mystic’s orders and witnesses Cattleya’s rare emotional vulnerability. Cattleya also questions Jane about saying goodbye to Abner.
  • Jane and Ludwell: Jane relinquishes control of Ludwell, allowing Cattleya to seal him away.
  • Abner and Xio: Abner gently reprimands Xio for acting independently, balancing concern with a desire to make her face Fors’s discipline.
  • Abner and Klein: Through the Tarot Club, Abner informs Klein of the operation and Kangwa’s status, allowing Klein to reassess the threat.
  • Klein and Dunn: Klein silently mocks Dunn’s attempt to appear informed while forgetting the case that led to the new commission.
  • Dunn and the investigators: Dunn accepts the investigation into Madam Sharon, beginning a new case involving family scandal and possible criminal activity.

Ch. 271Sequence 6: Polymath

Key plot points and events

  • Mr. Azik confirms that Baron Kangwa has been sealed in the castle ruins for at least a year, where he will remain absorbed in his studies. Azik says the danger is not entirely gone, but Abner should be safe for now.
  • Azik plans to travel with Silica to Feynapotter to thank Viscount Karen for caring for her over the centuries. He tells Abner to contact him through Silica if Kangwa’s seal fails.
  • After Azik and Silica leave, Abner checks the room for danger, then prays to the Fool to receive a Bestowal.
  • In Tingen, Klein reflects on Leonard’s tracking skills and the money he spent hiring people to watch Madam Sharon. He invites Benson and Melissa to see The Earl Returns; Melissa agrees when she hears a brilliant mechanic is a popular character.
  • Klein receives a prayer from The Tower. Above the Gray Fog, he sends Abner the Elder Tree Heartwood and Crystal of the Thousand Arts Phantom, omitting their suitcases.
  • The next morning, Abner prepares the Polymath Potion with the rare ingredients. He survives its painful mental effects and dangerous heart transformation, successfully advancing to Sequence 6.

Character developments

  • Abner advances from Keeper of Knowledge to Polymath. His familiarity with intense information and ability to control the Potion’s energy help him manage the transformation.
  • Mr. Azik remains protective of Abner, while beginning a personal journey to reconnect with Silica’s past and thank Karen.
  • Klein balances his secret work with ordinary family life, concealing his expenses and making plans to spend an evening out with Benson and Melissa.
  • Melissa shows excitement about the theater outing despite her initially reluctant manner.

Significant themes

  • Knowledge and its dangers: Abner’s advancement brings both an influx of information and a potentially lethal physical transformation.
  • Preparation and self-control: Abner’s careful timing, meditation, and practiced control help him survive the Potion.
  • Hidden lives and ordinary bonds: Klein’s supernatural responsibilities coexist with family routines and modest pleasures.
  • Trust and connection: Azik’s promise to remain reachable through Silica and his gratitude toward Karen emphasize enduring relationships.

Character interactions

  • Azik reassures Abner and offers Silica as a means of contacting him; Silica responds warmly to Azik and is fond of Abner’s hydrosol.
  • Klein jokes privately about Leonard’s varied talents, then invites his siblings to the theater.
  • Klein uses the Fool’s space to answer The Tower’s prayer by delivering the Potion ingredients to Abner.
  • Abner’s advancement is solitary, but it is enabled by assistance from others and by his own accumulated experience.

Ch. 272The Polymath's Abilities

Key events

  • After advancing to Sequence 6, Abner tests and reviews his new Polymath abilities.
  • His improved Analysis can reveal how Beyonder abilities work and identify nearby conditions, as well as opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. It is useful, but still less powerful than the Pure White Eye.
  • His transformed Omnipotent Heart stores energy for simulating abilities. Abner successfully imitates the Werewolf abilities he had previously analyzed, confirming that his heart’s energy fuels the simulation. He suspects the Pure White Eye instead draws on external power—and that this explains why it cannot safely imitate abilities that alter his body.
  • Using up the stored energy leaves Abner ravenously hungry. He discovers that food can replenish it.
  • Abner explores the Learning Space, a star-filled mental realm where he can study and simulate abilities more efficiently. He suspects it will develop into the White Tower associated with his future Demigod form.
  • He tests the Pure White Eye and finds he can keep it active for roughly an hour and a half to two hours. It can also make limited modifications to abilities, though for now only by weakening them.
  • After cleaning up, Abner heads downstairs for food. He uses Gliding rather than the stairs and surprises Xio and Fors, who are chatting in the hall.

Character development and interactions

  • Abner becomes more confident in understanding the mechanics and limits of his new powers, especially the different energy sources behind his own Simulation and the Pure White Eye’s.
  • His playful humor remains intact: he jokes about late-night snacks and imagines earning the nickname “the Glutton Detective.”
  • His immediate interaction with Xio and Fors is brief but shows them witnessing his unusual post-advancement hunger and effortless Gliding.

Significant themes

  • Knowledge turned into power: The Omnipotent Heart makes stored knowledge actionable through Simulation.
  • Power has limits and costs: Abner’s abilities depend on energy, and bodily enhancements may carry serious physical risks.
  • Growth and future potential: The Learning Space hints at the White Tower and Abner’s eventual higher form.
  • Experimentation and adaptation: Abner tests his abilities methodically, learning not only what they can do but how to make them more accessible through modification.

Ch. 273Lina

Plot points

  • Klein uses his Clown agility to break into Madam Sharon’s bedroom while she is away at a Conservative Party banquet. He finds the room filled with a strangely arousing fragrance but quickly composes himself.
  • Lina, a Witch who has been watching the house, observes Klein’s break-in from the garden. She admires his abilities and jokes that the Clowns she trained are useless by comparison.
  • In Backlund, Abner brings Hazel to a Beyonder gathering, then meets Maric to ask for another demonstration of his Zombie abilities. Maric agrees for a price, but Sharron negotiates payment in the form of an ordinary dairy cow with a magical-creature bloodline, to be sourced through Judy.
  • A one-eyed man writes an account of the events in Tingen, describing how Lina’s actions set the investigation in motion and how the Nighthawks’ plan against Sharon went wrong. His narration presents the events as a deliberately shaped “story,” including the possibility that Dunn has been cursed.
  • In reality, Lina intervenes in the fight and saves Kenley from the black flame of Sealed Artifact 3-0271. The Nighthawks kill Sharon, but she unleashes a deadly curse before dying. The chapter ends with Klein questioning Lina about why she helped them.

Character developments and interactions

  • Klein remains cautious even after defeating Sharon. He notices Lina’s intervention and questions her motives.
  • Lina is revealed as both an observer and an active participant. She helps the Nighthawks because Kenley’s fiancée—her colleague—has been kind to her, and Lina does not want that woman’s life to contain a tragic loss.
  • Abner has advanced to Sequence 6 and is now confident enough to deal with Maric without much fear. His negotiation with Sharron shows his practical, businesslike approach.
  • Sharron remains composed and enigmatic, trading Maric’s demonstration for a rare cow she needs.
  • Dunn is struck by Sharon’s curse, though its effects are not yet clear. Kenley’s survival contrasts with the alternate outcome recorded in the mysterious man’s notebook.

Significant themes

  • Stories and fate: The notebook’s account treats events as a constructed narrative, raising questions about whether the characters’ lives are being shaped or rewritten.
  • Compassion amid danger: Lina’s choice to save Kenley is motivated by gratitude and concern for his fiancée, despite Lina’s own aims as a Witch.
  • Risk and unintended consequences: The Nighthawks’ plan fails because of Sharon’s statue and the dangerous artifact, while Sharon’s final curse strikes Dunn instead of those she might logically target.

Ch. 274The Eve

Key plot points

  • After Madam Sharon’s defeat, Klein confirms through divination that Lina has left. He treats Kenley with Fallen Morning Star and finds him badly injured but alive; the item’s healing also frees him from the Evil Spirit’s mark.
  • Klein uses Spirit Channeling on Madam Sharon and learns that the mayor helped engineer Senator Maynard’s death, as well as several Demoness Pathway potion formulas. Sharon’s motive still seems suspiciously reckless.
  • Dunn wakes from the curse and admits he misread the situation. Relieved to learn Kenley survived, he praises the Goddess and orders Klein to secure the scene, involve the police, and summon Frye.
  • Lina escapes through the river to a prepared hideout. She realizes the chain of events around Madam Sharon, Senator Maynard, and Fallen Morning Star may have been orchestrated to bring the artifact to Tingen. Fearing a larger danger, she leaves the city at dawn.
  • A one-eyed man with a self-writing quill—apparently using 0-08—writes a plan to provoke a crisis in Tingen before Sunday’s service. He intends to draw Megose, carrying a divine offspring, to the Nighthawks’ headquarters and exploit Dunn’s likely mistakes. He also notes that Azik will be unable to intervene.
  • Separately, Abner receives a telegram: Bishop Utravsky wants him at Harvest Church.

Character developments and interactions

  • Klein shows caution toward Lina but recognizes that she saved Kenley. He gives Dunn a full account of her actions and his Spirit Channeling discoveries, while privately reflecting on how devastating a Nighthawk’s death would be for their loved ones.
  • Dunn admits his error and shows deep relief and gratitude when Kenley’s survival is revealed. He leaves Lina out of the planned report to the Holy Cathedral.
  • Lina shifts from confident intervention to alarm and suspicion, concluding that Tingen may be caught in a deliberate scheme. She chooses flight rather than risk remaining involved.
  • The one-eyed man treats Lina’s departure as the removal of an unpredictable factor and moves ahead with his plans. His written account shows how he intends to exploit Dunn’s judgment and the Nighthawks’ situation.

Significant themes

  • Protection and its cost: Nighthawks accept that they may die in service, while Klein and Dunn feel the personal grief such deaths would cause.
  • Manipulation and coincidence: Lina recognizes that seemingly unrelated events may have been engineered, while the one-eyed man’s notes reveal a hidden hand shaping events.
  • Duty under pressure: Dunn’s tactical mistake and the coming threat suggest that even careful plans can fail when fear, curses, and supernatural forces cloud judgment.

Ch. 275Light and Dark

Plot and key events

  • Abner receives a summons from Bishop Utravsky and suspects it may be connected to the unfolding crisis in Tingen. He worries that “0-08” is shaping events and that Dunn’s death may be unavoidable.
  • Klein cancels the Tarot Club gathering after Justice, Hanged Man, and Judgment all ask to be excused. He goes home, briefly sees Benson and Melissa preparing for a theater ticket queue and church service, then falls asleep.
  • Dunn visits Klein in a dream and sends him to 62 Howes Street to help Leonard investigate the Lanevus case. There, Klein and Leonard find a letter warning that a bomb in Tingen is growing stronger over time. Klein links it to the deaths and suffering of the city’s workers and rushes back with Leonard to alert Dunn.
  • At Blackthorn Security Company, the pregnant Megose arrives. Leonard recognizes her just as the threat becomes clear. A Flaring Sun Charm destroys the entity within her, apparently saving Tingen—but Dunn collapses, and an unseen attacker stabs Klein, takes the charm and Saint Selena’s Ashes, and leaves Klein unable to see.
  • In Backlund, Abner learns that Bishop Utravsky has kept Hazel away because she is not yet meant to know about the matter. Utravsky leads Abner into the sealed basement, where Abner meets a silver-haired incarnation of Lilith. Lilith asks him to place an ink-black gem on Dunn’s body and take him to the Abundance Church in Enmat Harbor.

Character developments and interactions

  • Abner remains cautious and increasingly aware of how far events exceed his strength. His suspicions about the church’s sealed presence are confirmed when he meets Lilith, yet he accepts the dangerous task.
  • Klein balances ordinary family concerns with the growing supernatural crisis. His haste to save Dunn shows his loyalty and desperation, but he is struck down before he can help.
  • Dunn continues to act decisively as captain and embodies the Nighthawks’ duty, declaring that they saved Tingen and are “Guardians” before collapsing.
  • Leonard works with Klein to uncover Lanevus’s warning and recognizes Megose at the crucial moment.
  • Benson and Melissa provide a brief glimpse of Klein’s family life, contrasting with the escalating danger.
  • Utravsky protects Hazel from knowledge of the secret and serves as the intermediary between Abner and Lilith.

Significant themes

  • Duty and sacrifice: The Nighthawks protect the city despite being “miserable wretches,” and Dunn’s words underscore the cost of that role.
  • Social suffering as supernatural fuel: Klein realizes that exploitation and premature deaths among workers may be feeding the growing threat.
  • Fate and limited control: Abner fears that warning Klein cannot prevent the established tragedy; events seem to be converging beyond their ability to redirect.
  • Light and darkness: The Flaring Sun Charm destroys the entity in Megose, but the victory is immediately shadowed by Dunn’s collapse and Klein’s attack.
  • Ordinary life beside catastrophe: Family routines and the canceled Tarot gathering briefly persist while a city-threatening crisis unfolds.

Ch. 276Abner's Plans

Key plot points and events

  • Ince Zangwill reviews the story he has recorded of Tingen’s catastrophe: Megose and the unborn god’s offspring were defeated, Dunn was left near death, and Klein was killed after trying to save Dunn. Ince took the ashes of Saint Selena and the Fallen Morning Star, then used them to advance to Sequence 4 and become a demigod. He declares Tingen’s story over and plans to use the necklace’s concealment power to evade—and possibly hunt—the Evernight Church.
  • A Mind Dragon senses that an unexpected intervention changed events. Suspecting his former Subsidiary God was responsible, he resolves to wait patiently for a chance to act, while remaining wary of Hermes. He also wonders why he keeps speaking his thoughts aloud.
  • In Backlund, Abner receives a strange Black Gemstone from the Earth Mother’s envoy. It is a Life Stone meant to activate something placed on Dunn. Abner agrees to use it, partly because he wants to save Dunn and partly out of gratitude to Lilith; the envoy gives him a blue crystal pendant as an advance reward.
  • Abner plans to wait until after Dunn’s burial before retrieving his body from Tingen, then act at night to avoid the Church and any unexpected encounter with Klein. In the meantime, he intends to master the Clown Mask’s appearance-changing ability.
  • Benson and Melissa visit the ruined Blackthorn Security Company with Leonard. Melissa silently grieves over Klein’s body, calling him an “idiot.” Miss Daly vows revenge on Lanevus and Ince Zangwill.
  • The chapter ends in Backlund, where Detective Zeriel questions Ian about a possible lead on the Helmosuin Manuscript.

Character developments and interactions

  • Ince Zangwill is triumphant after achieving demigod status, but remains defiant toward the Church that rejected him.
  • Abner accepts a dangerous mission to save Dunn and shows both personal loyalty and caution, carefully planning how to avoid detection.
  • The Mind Dragon displays growing suspicion and self-doubt, questioning both his allies and his own habits.
  • Melissa and Benson confront the cost of the disaster; Melissa’s restrained grief contrasts with Leonard’s visible sympathy.
  • Miss Daly channels her grief into a fierce promise of vengeance. Stewart quietly respects the family’s mourning by holding back his questions.

Significant themes

  • The cost of ambition and betrayal: Ince’s rise to power comes through the deaths and suffering of others.
  • Grief and revenge: Klein’s death devastates his family and companions, while Miss Daly turns sorrow into anger.
  • Hidden intervention and uncertainty: The Dragon recognizes that unseen forces have altered events, suggesting that the larger conflict remains unresolved.
  • Hope after tragedy: Abner’s plan to recover Dunn’s body offers a possible chance to reverse some of the catastrophe’s losses.

Ch. 277Audrey's Arrangements

Key plot points and events

  • Ian reports that he found clues near a hidden door but could not open it. Detective Zeriel rewards him and decides the door may involve something supernatural, so he arranges to contact his superior through their secret signaling system.
  • Zeriel learns that Aileen has stopped casually seeing other men and is trying to repair her reputation through high-society appearances. He then leaves for the Golden Rose. Unbeknownst to him, Aileen and her boyfriend, Mr. Bingley, are praying before a statue of an upside-down giant.
  • Abner receives a letter from Judy: she has not found the dairy cow he requested, and Karen seems troubled. Xio then brings Abner three pages of Roselle’s Diary, obtained from MI9’s archives.
  • Xio tells Abner that Audrey has invited her and Fors to tea. At Viscount Glaint’s home, Audrey pays them 800 pounds for their earlier investigation and apologizes for their associate’s death. Glaint also offers a reward if they can find the Apothecary formula.
  • Xio mentions a possible lead on the Psychology Alchemists and the Spectator potion Audrey had wanted. The group then discusses rumors and browses Glaint’s books.
  • Xio discovers a hidden compartment in a book containing Roselle’s symbols and the familiar invocation of the Fool. She borrows the book and discreetly looks toward Audrey, who has quietly prepared the circumstances for Xio to find it.

Character developments and interactions

  • Ian is careful and unusually orderly for a poor orphan, meticulously arranging his reward money. Zeriel is amused by his habits but takes the supernatural clue seriously.
  • Zeriel shows caution by referring the dangerous hidden door to his superior. His visit to Aileen also reveals that her social behavior has changed, though he does not investigate why.
  • Aileen and Bingley appear to have adopted a shared religious practice, suggesting a significant change in their private lives.
  • Abner keeps his understanding of Roselle’s writing concealed from Xio and remains more concerned with practical matters than Karen’s unexplained distraction.
  • Xio and Fors accept Audrey’s generous payment. Xio is eager to know its amount, while Fors reflects wryly on how little her writing has earned.
  • Audrey continues guiding events subtly, using her Spectator skills to make Xio’s discovery seem spontaneous. She and Xio silently misread each other’s assumptions about their respective strength and advancement.
  • Glaint is impressed by Audrey’s ability to spend freely and offers further payment for help finding the Apothecary formula.

Significant themes

  • Hidden supernatural forces: The sealed door, the inverted-giant statue, and the concealed invocation all point to occult activity beneath ordinary life.
  • Manipulation and free will: Audrey’s “arrangements” show how a Spectator can steer people while letting them believe they acted independently.
  • Money and social position: The 800-pound reward highlights Audrey’s wealth and generosity, while Xio and Fors’s reactions contrast their circumstances with hers.
  • Secrecy and appearance: Characters conceal knowledge, motives, and affiliations—from Abner hiding his ability to read Roselle’s script to Aileen publicly rebuilding her reputation while privately praying with Bingley.

Ch. 278Diary

Plot points

  • Abner finishes analyzing Lilith’s Tears, a powerful pendant that can heal its user, transform them into a giant bear, or unleash Desolation—a devastating area effect that also destroys the pendant and slowly kills the user. Every use causes severe sorrow and risks loss of control.
  • Abner reads three consecutive pages from Roselle’s diary. They recount Roselle and his companions finding Solomon Empire ruins in Loen, surviving paths warped by distorted distance and motion, and discovering that the ruins’ mural pointed to a more important treasure.
  • Abner connects the ruins, the suspected Solomon bloodline of the Kholger family, Roselle’s later rise to Black Emperor, and Nast’s claimed ancestry. He suspects the treasure helped Roselle attain his position, though some details remain unexplained.
  • At the diary’s end, Abner reflects that uncovering historical secrets has barely advanced his Polymath potion digestion; he still does not know what truly defines the acting method.
  • At night, Azik visits Klein’s grave, apologizes for arriving late, and says he believes he has identified the culprit. After Azik leaves, a hand emerges from the grave.

Character developments and interactions

  • Abner gains a formidable trump card but recognizes its near-suicidal cost. His historical deductions grow sharper, yet his frustration over slow potion digestion reveals that knowledge alone may not be enough to act as a Polymath.
  • Roselle, through his diary, appears adventurous and self-assured, eager to pursue rumored treasure and confident that fortune favors him. His accounts also show his interest in engineering and modernizing transportation.
  • Azik shows concern and regret over his delayed arrival, while suggesting he has made progress in identifying someone connected to Klein’s death.
  • Roselle’s companions disagree about the expedition: Edwards is enthusiastic, Karen doubtful, and the group ultimately votes to proceed.

Significant themes

  • Power and sacrifice: Lilith’s Tears offers extraordinary abilities at a potentially fatal psychological and physical cost.
  • History and hidden inheritance: Abner’s deductions suggest that bloodlines, concealed treasures, and old empires shape later political power.
  • Knowledge versus understanding: Abner’s expertise does not automatically translate into potion digestion, leaving him uncertain about the deeper principles of his Sequence.
  • Death and return: Azik’s visit to Klein’s grave ends with the startling suggestion that Klein may not be as dead as the grave implies.

Ch. 279Resurrection

Plot points and events

  • Klein resurrects in his grave after dying with the urn of Saint Selena’s Ashes and the Fallen Morning Star. His wounds heal slowly, and he retains his Clown abilities. He fills in his grave again so no one will discover his return.
  • He visits Captain Dunn’s grave and breaks down in grief, then prepares to use divination to identify whoever killed him.
  • Hearing that Melissa’s teacher, Kospsti Reid, is conducting a nighttime ritual in the cemetery, Klein investigates. Kospsti and several students have dug up a corpse and are attempting to revive it through a Spirit Dance and a black cat.
  • The ritual succeeds in animating the corpse, but it becomes violent. Klein distracts it with the Azik Copper Whistle, then uses a Sleep Talisman to put it down and prevent the students from being harmed.
  • Kospsti flees. Klein questions the students, learns that their teacher promised to reveal the secrets of eternal life, and tracks him to a nearby hotel.
  • Elsewhere, Abner—disguised with a limited Faceless ability—reviews reports of recent Beyonder incidents in Tingen. He notices changes from the events he remembers and wonders whether his and Xio’s actions caused them. He also senses spiritual activity in the room next door.

Character developments

  • Klein is newly resurrected but remains shaken by his death and the loss of those close to him. His grief for Dunn is intense, while his affection for Melissa motivates him to intervene when he suspects her teacher is dangerous. Despite being disoriented, he acts decisively to protect the students.
  • Abner remains cautious about approaching Klein, knowing his disguise may not fool Klein’s spiritual perception. He continues investigating changes in events and appears to be pursuing a separate plan involving Dunn’s body.
  • Kospsti is presented as a reckless and possibly inexperienced ritualist: his attempt to resurrect the corpse works, but he loses control of it and abandons his students.

Significant themes

  • Resurrection and death: Klein’s return contrasts with his grief for Dunn and raises questions about the limits and dangers of bringing the dead back.
  • Grief and remembrance: Dunn’s epitaph and Klein’s tears emphasize the lasting emotional cost of the earlier events.
  • Responsibility and protection: Klein’s concern for Melissa leads him to risk exposing himself to save the teenagers.
  • Uncertainty and changing events: Abner’s reports suggest that events are diverging from the story he remembers, with unclear causes and consequences.

Character interactions

  • Klein silently mourns Dunn, then confronts the danger posed by Kospsti’s ritual without revealing his identity.
  • He questions the frightened students, warns them to go home and tell their parents, and learns what Kospsti had promised them.
  • Abner avoids direct contact with Klein but indirectly tracks developments in Tingen through reports and his own observations.

Ch. 280Digging Up a Grave

Plot points and events

  • Klein questions Kospsti, the teacher whose Spirit Dance ritual caused a corpse to rise. Kospsti explains that an old vagrant taught him the ritual and other mystic practices before dying; the old man is buried in Kospsti’s Backlund garden.
  • Kospsti reveals a copper whistle that summons a Spirit World creature—a skull surrounded by tentacles. Because he cannot see it, he has been unknowingly summoning it. Klein frightens him into stopping and promises to dispose of the whistle.
  • Klein senses someone watching him, leaves the hotel cautiously, and goes Above the Gray Fog. His divinations identify Ince Zangwill as responsible for his death and point to Backlund as the destination associated with Ince, Lanevus, and Klein’s hopes of becoming stronger. Klein decides to go there.
  • Abner, who had been invisibly observing Klein, avoids meeting him. He questions Kospsti in a dream and confirms the teacher’s activities.
  • After monitoring events through Sunday, Abner sees that Kospsti has not been arrested and that the cemetery is no longer likely to attract official attention. That night, he secretly digs up Dunn Smith’s grave, examines Dunn’s body, then takes it away in a sack, intending to use a special Life Stone to revive him.

Character developments

  • Klein remains wary and resourceful, but his questioning briefly stirs grief over no longer being a Nighthawk and losing Captain Dunn. He uses humor to steady himself, then focuses on uncovering the truth and chooses Backlund as his next destination.
  • Kospsti is exposed as a well-meaning but dangerously ignorant amateur, not a Beyonder. His excitement about mysticism gives way to terror once Klein explains what he has been summoning.
  • Abner shows caution and considerable power, avoiding a premature encounter with Klein while pursuing his own plan. His decision to recover Dunn suggests a strong personal investment in Dunn’s fate.
  • Dunn remains physically intact in his coffin; Abner’s examination leads him to suspect Dunn is not entirely dead.

Themes

  • The dangers of incomplete knowledge: Kospsti’s half-understood rituals create real supernatural risks.
  • Grief and recovery: Klein’s loss of Dunn resurfaces, while humor and resolve help him keep moving.
  • Fate, influence, and hidden causes: Klein considers whether the power of Sealed Artifact 0-08 shaped events and even interfered with his thoughts.
  • Death and uncertain revival: Dunn’s condition and the Life Stone blur the boundary between death and return.

Character interactions

  • Klein interrogates and intimidates Kospsti, then warns him about the whistle and secures his promise to leave Tingen.
  • Abner observes Klein from concealment but deliberately avoids contact; later, he enters Kospsti’s dream to learn what happened.
  • Abner’s secret recovery of Dunn links his plans to Klein’s grief, though Klein does not yet know what Abner is doing.
