That Greenskin Ork stuck its arm in, but it couldn't see what was inside the cave and could only wave its weapon around blindly.
Lin En swung his sword at its arm.
...This was a little awkward.
He hadn't cut through it.
He had only barely damaged its defenses, and the Ork might not even have felt the pain.
The Greenskins' skin was too thick, their muscles too dense, and their bones even denser. It took tremendous strength to cut through them.
Although Lin En had previously drawn Stamina Enhancement, he still had the strength of an ordinary human.
In Warhammer 40,000, ordinary people couldn't cut down Greenskin Orks at all unless they were equipped with power armor.
Sob, he really wanted some power armor too.
But it didn't matter. If he couldn't cut through the arm, he could still cut the Ork's fingers.
Lin En brought his sword down, and three of the Ork's fingers fell off.
The Greenskin let out a howl, then clutched its hand and backed away.
On the other side, Cecilia also chopped through an Ork's hand in one stroke.
Then another Ork hand appeared.
They had seen what happened to their companion, but they didn't stop at all.
That was what Greenskin Orks were like: low-intelligence, single-celled organisms.
**********
They held off the Orks' attacks at the narrow cave entrance.
Fortunately, the small opening was easy to defend.
Anyone who stuck their head out got cut down.
A huge mass of Greenskin Orks crowded outside, unable to squeeze in.
Iron Hammer crouched farther back, with six bombs laid out in front of him.
He lined the bombs up, checked the wires, and confirmed that none were broken. Then he raised his head and gave Lin En and the others an OK sign.
It seemed that the Greenskin Orks outside had gathered in sufficient numbers. Basically, no more Orks were pouring out of the camp.
Iron Hammer counted them through the telescope built into his gas mask.
The scavenger squad wasn't particularly large—around thirty low-level Choppa Boyz. With the bombs and their own attacks, they shouldn't have any trouble.
He nodded at Lin En and Cecilia.
Although the Orks were much tougher than the cultists, their brains were just as small. They had no idea how to distinguish a trap.
Cecilia nodded and motioned for Lin En to move aside.
Then she drew her Bolter and stepped directly into the cave entrance, firing several shots at the foremost Orks outside.
The heads of the Orks she hit exploded like watermelons.
...Though they might not even have been as big as watermelons.
The commotion among the Orks grew even louder.
Lin En and Cecilia quickly moved away from the entrance and ran toward the bend deeper inside the cave.
The Greenskin Orks had no idea what a trap was.
Sensing that the people behind the entrance had disappeared, the Greenskins let out excited roars and rushed in one after another.
With no one blocking them, they poured in very quickly.
Lin En, Cecilia, and Iron Hammer hid behind the bend. Lin En turned off his flashlight, while Iron Hammer used his night-vision goggles to count the Orks rushing into the darkness.
The Orks carried torches. Their flames flickered as Iron Hammer rapidly counted the green figures.
Five, eight, fifteen... thirty.
Once he estimated that nearly all the Orks had entered, they excitedly searched the cave for their enemies.
Iron Hammer pressed the trigger.
"BOOM--!!!!!!"
Several bombs detonated at once, producing a world-shaking explosion.
Lin En and the others had already taken cover around the bend. Even pressed against the cave wall, they were still pushed back several steps by the surging wave of heat. A few strands of their hair were singed, filling the air with the smell of burning plastic.
Fortunately, Cecilia was standing in front of them. Her power armor was heavy enough that the heat wave couldn't push her back.
She was like a wall, blocking most of the impact for Lin En and Iron Hammer. Otherwise, they might have been thrown much farther than a few steps.
Iron Hammer reached up and touched the top of his head, finding several curled strands of hair. He held them up before his eyes. They were already scorched and brittle, crumbling at a touch.
"My hair." QAQ
Lin En reached behind him and felt his own hair.
A few strands had been singed too, though not many.
It was fine. He had plenty of hair to spare.
Smoke poured in from the cave entrance, carrying the stinging smell of fuel and charred meat.
Lin En coughed twice, covered his nose with his sleeve, and cautiously looked outside.
The originally narrow entrance had been blasted much wider. Light streamed in from outside, illuminating the chamber within the mountain.
Because the explosion had occurred in an almost circular enclosed space, the shock waves had overlapped, doubling the blast's power. Outside, the Greenskins lay dead everywhere, surrounded by black blood and charred corpses.
A few could still move, but they were merely struggling on the ground, unable to get back up.
Cecilia walked into the heap of Greenskins. Her Power Sword swept from left to right, granting release to those brainless creatures.
They had recognized the mark of the Emperor's warrior. They should remember not to become the Emperor's enemies in their next lives.
Most of the Greenskins had been killed by the explosion, and Cecilia cut down the rest.
"Are there any more?" Cecilia asked.
Iron Hammer crawled out through the entrance and tapped rapidly on his data slate. "There are none left in the camp either. There are no Greenskin signals nearby. Those just now should have been all of them."
The counterattack had succeeded!
Cecilia wiped her Power Sword on the Greenskins' tattered clothing, removing the scorched, stinking blood, then sheathed it on her back.
Iron Hammer crouched beside a Greenskin corpse and poked one of its teeth with a welding torch.
The Greenskin's tusk was as long as a finger, yellow, and marked with black patterns.
Then he began pulling the teeth out.
"What are you doing?" Lin En asked in surprise.
"These can be sold for money," Iron Hammer said.
So Lin En joined him in pulling them out.
After the teeth had been removed, Cecilia set all the Ork corpses on the ground ablaze.
The tissues of Ork corpses would grow into new Orks once they fell into the soil. Although they couldn't burn everything perfectly, burning as much as possible was better than nothing.
"Will the Orks grow back from the pieces blown apart by the explosion?" Iron Hammer asked.
"As long as the Orks have even a little living tissue left, new Orks will grow from it," Lin En replied.
If the roots weren't destroyed, the grass would return when the spring breeze blew.
To exterminate the Orks, every bit of their tissue had to be burned away. If the remains weren't cleaned up, more Greenskins would grow here in a few days.
Cecilia gave Lin En an approving glance. "Correct."
The specially made flames were white and extremely hot.
The Greenskin corpses' skin blistered in the flames, then turned black and split open, revealing the muscles and bones beneath.
The muscles contracted in the fire, while the bones became brittle and eventually burned to ash.
Cecilia took the flamethrower and burned the surrounding area as well, doing her best to eliminate the spores.
If the Greenskins didn't possess this regenerative ability, they probably wouldn't have become the Imperium's greatest internal threat.
This species was truly troublesome. Killing them wasn't enough; their corpses had to be destroyed, or they would turn into even more enemies on their own.
Lin En was watching Cecilia burn the corpses.
Suddenly, a "ding--" rang out in his mind.
"Hm?"
The system had suddenly appeared!
Why had the system suddenly shown up out of nowhere???
Lin En was bewildered.
The system announced in its emotionless mechanical voice:
[The host has actively killed a cumulative total of one hundred enemies.] [Condition: The story event "One Hundred Kills" has been triggered.] [Reward: One additional draw.] [Wow, what a surprise. The host managed to complete One Hundred Kills despite having no combat ability.]
Lin En stood there with his mouth open.
"...Huh?"
He turned his head to look at Cecilia and Iron Hammer.
Huh?????
Huh????????
