The Emperor rebuilt humanity after Terra had been devastated by nuclear war, industrial exploitation, population growth, and ecological collapse. He united the planet and led the Great Crusade, bringing human civilization close to a renewed golden age before the Horus Heresy destroyed that progress 196.

The failure of the Webway Project forced him onto the Golden Throne. From there, he has spent ten thousand years suppressing the damaged Webway entrance and powering the Astronomican. The Throne preserves what remains of his humanity, but his accumulated psychic power has brought him close to godhood 1 202.

The Emperor’s ascension is dangerous. His divine domain is associated with destruction, and allowing divinity to overwhelm his human consciousness could destroy the world rather than save it 1 202.

After Lin En’s arrival, the Emperor becomes aware of a possible solution. The system’s rainbow trait Throne Liberation could allow him to leave the Golden Throne at peak condition without becoming a god, although Lin En has not obtained it 2 207.

Appearance

The Emperor’s true body is a skeletal, immobile figure seated upon the Golden Throne. A red cloak conceals most of his decayed form, while immense golden psychic energy surrounds him 201 202.

His greatest failure is emotional rather than strategic. He gave the Primarchs immense responsibilities but failed to provide the affection and understanding they expected from a father. Lin En describes Guilliman’s resentment as a child’s complaint against a failed parent rather than genuine hatred 208.

Despite his severity, the Emperor wants humanity to become strong enough that it no longer needs him or the Primarchs as tools. He hopes his own sacrifices will eventually become unnecessary 208.

He can also be evasive and playful. When Lin En recognizes that he is pretending not to remember their earlier interaction, the Emperor maintains the act rather than explaining himself directly 203.
