Background / History
Expedition to Istvaan III
Iron Hammer came from a Forge World directly under Ultramarines jurisdiction. He traveled to Istvaan III to collect unique crystals formed in Warp-contaminated rock, bringing three Fighter Combat Servitors. The expedition encountered far more Chaos cultists than intelligence reports had indicated, and all three servitors eventually broke down 20.
Cecilia found him while searching for reinforcements to rescue Lin En. Using salvaged servitor components and locally gathered materials, Iron Hammer assembled a crude suit of Power Armor for her. He then joined their escape attempt, providing an underground map, access to his exploration station, and a ship waiting outside 20.
His exhausted food supply forced the group to seek provisions from the cultists. When theft proved impractical, he built traps for Lin En’s bait-and-ambush strategy. The group also used explosives to defeat a Greenskin camp 21 22 25.
Rescue Mission and Tyrennius’s Death
When cultists surrounded the exploration station, Lin En drew them away so Cecilia and Iron Hammer could escape. Iron Hammer fiercely protested leaving him behind, remembering how Lin En had helped him when he could no longer run. He nevertheless departed with Cecilia to find reinforcements 26 27 28.
After receiving help escaping an Aeldari ambush, they returned with the Blood Angel Tyrennius. Iron Hammer subsequently volunteered to support his mission against the cultists, offering repairs, explosives, and transportation 34 39.
During the fighting, Iron Hammer repaired Tyrennius’s broken chainsword despite having no previous experience with that weapon. Lin En then blessed it with Holy Light; Iron Hammer explicitly denied responsibility for the supernatural effect 42 43.
Tyrennius died fighting the Khorne Vanguard. As Daemons approached their shelter, Iron Hammer blamed himself for having neglected combat-oriented augmentations and regretted being unable to protect his companions. He prepared his Plasma Cutter and explosives before the Blood Angels Fifth Company arrived 50.
Service with the 0825th Regiment
Following the rescue, Mechanicus Tech-Priests verified Iron Hammer’s identity, and he was released after routine questioning. He and Lin En stayed at the Blood Angels’ base while Cecilia remained confined. He also tried to prevent Yulia from revealing Lin En’s weapon blessing, knowing it could attract unwanted Inquisition attention 54 56.
Iron Hammer accompanied Cecilia through her enlistment arrangements and joined the 0825th Regiment as a technical sergeant. The regiment urgently needed technical personnel: three Chimeras had been unusable for two months because nobody could repair them 57 61 62 68.
He restored neglected vehicles and machinery to service and supplied Cecilia with a handmade gun, ammunition belt, and portable bombs. During operations, he worked at a joint logistics station roughly one kilometer behind the main attack line 68 76.
When Lin En transferred to the Ultramarines, Iron Hammer remained behind with Cecilia. The three shared a farewell meal before Lin En’s departure 85.
Reunion and Bolomite
By their reunion on Asphodex, Iron Hammer commanded an entire Adeptus Mechanicus department, though he greeted Lin En with the same exuberance as before. He later visited Tyrennius’s coffin with Lin En and Cecilia and attended Baal’s victory celebration 287 298.
He chose to accompany Lin En on his subsequent travels. When Lin En became unresponsive the following morning, Iron Hammer discovered his condition and immediately summoned the Custodes and Cecilia 301 302.
On Bolomite, Iron Hammer took charge of the industrial district while Cecilia directed reconstruction. He helped supply the Chapters’ mission to rescue three million civilians from Slaughterhouse 3, then secretly piloted Lin En after the departing fleet despite Cecilia’s orders that Lin En recuperate 319 321 322.
Left aboard the shuttle while Lin En intervened on the surface, Iron Hammer had to answer Cecilia’s call and explain his absence. After the rescue, he angrily confronted Lin En; both were later required to write handwritten self-criticism reports 332 333 337.
Industrial Defense Against the Tyranids
Iron Hammer supervised Bolomite’s production lines and the construction of inexpensive, explosive-filled “Iron Box” ships. At Lin En’s direction, unnecessary crew facilities and components were removed. He estimated that the workers’ crude iron-box design cost about seventy percent less than the standard version 370 373.
He worked without sleep for two days as production accelerated. Ultimately, he built more than one hundred thousand small Iron Box ships for Lin En’s unmanned attacks against the Tyranid fleet 374 376.
When material shortages brought production close to collapse, Lin En ordered the industrial district evacuated. Iron Hammer insisted on completing and launching the final batch before shutting down, then urged the workers to take shelter 377.
He later panicked over an Inquisition inspection of the Purple Carapace Chapter until Cecilia explained that it was a routine visit. His latest appearance shows him inspecting twelve recolored Tyranid Motherships with Gabriel and waiting for Lin En to explain their transformation 392 405.
Appearance
- Face and hair: Youthful, freckled face, a faint scar across the bridge of his nose, and untidy golden hair protruding beneath his hood 20.
- Eyes: Initially described with gray-blue eyes; later shown with one red cybernetic augur eye and one remaining natural blue-gray eye 20 34 37 50.
- Augmentations: Four mechanical auxiliary limbs mounted behind his back 42.
- Clothing: Wears robes and a respirator or gas mask, which he often hangs from his belt when speaking 20 21.
- Build: Initially retains a mostly human appearance and has limited physical strength and stamina 20 26 42.
Personality
Iron Hammer is friendly, excitable, and intensely curious about unfamiliar technology. He eagerly scans Tyrennius’s Power Armor and demands a technical explanation when Lin En makes the chainsword glow. His curiosity also extends to Custodes armor, prompting Lin En to intervene before he causes offense 20 37 43 287.
He is deeply attached to Lin En and Cecilia. Leaving Lin En on Istvaan III causes him visible distress, and he cries with relief when Cecilia is released from confinement. Despite later attaining high office, he remains playful and undignified around them 27 28 56 287.
His casual habits contrast with his conduct during emergencies. He is caught sleeping in the warehouse and readily joins Lin En’s unauthorized excursion, but later works for two days without rest to sustain Bolomite’s defenses 321 374.
Tyrennius’s death exposes his insecurity about his limited fighting ability. He regrets not replacing his auxiliary limbs with more destructive augmentations, yet also recognizes that he cannot keep pace with Astartes or match their Techmarines 50 64.
Abilities & Skills
Power Armor Engineering
Power Armor is Iron Hammer’s original field of study 42.
- Assembles Cecilia’s improvised armor from salvaged servitor components 20.
- Provides powered assistance, armor plating, and life support despite limited materials 20.
- His improvised suit lacks an integrated helmet display and communications array 20.
- Offers field maintenance to support Tyrennius’s mission 39.
Repairs and Fabrication
Iron Hammer repairs military equipment and manufactures weapons and protective devices.
- Reconnects and welds the energy conduit of Tyrennius’s chainsword, restoring operation 42.
- Returns neglected regimental machinery and vehicles to service 68.
- Makes Cecilia a gun and matching ammunition belt 68.
- Personally welds an Iron Halo for Phoros 392.
- Limits: Initially has no weapon-repair experience and has never studied an Astartes chainsword. Its Holy Light enchantment comes from Lin En, not his repairs 42 43.
Explosives and Traps
He adapts salvaged cultist technology into ambush weapons.
- Builds tripwire explosives using a Warp Crystal Trigger taken from a psychic weapon 22.
- Converts psychic-focuser energy cells into pressure-triggered bombs 22.
- Estimates that one trap can kill two or three cultists, with greater effect in an enclosed space 22.
- Cecilia credits his bombs and traps with eliminating at least three hundred cultists 39.
- Uses more than a dozen smoke grenades to conceal the retreat from the Khorne Vanguard 47.
Industrial Management
As Bolomite’s industrial head and Fabricator-General, Iron Hammer manages production, inventories, and large-scale fabrication 321 332 370.
- Coordinates factory-line speeds and monitors output through a data-slate 370.
- Assesses material, labor, and time costs for ship construction 373.
- Oversees mass production of explosive-filled Iron Box ships 374 376.
- Limits: The ships’ crewless operation depends on Lin En’s Machine Spirit Resonance; Iron Hammer supplies their manufacture rather than that ability 373.
Surveying and Piloting
- Uses mineral detectors and scanners while exploring Istvaan III 21 38.
- Checks for nearby Greenskin signals through his equipment 25.
- Pilots his ship during the return to Istvaan III and a small spacecraft during the Slaughterhouse 3 expedition 34 322.
- Provides a detailed map of Istvaan III’s underground cave network 20.
