Green entered the underground ruins, and a majestic, solemn pyramid appeared within his field of vision. However, the young man and the two girls from before had already disappeared.
Green did not pay it any mind. Judging from the distance and structure between here and the abandoned office building above, the sounds of the battle above could almost certainly not reach this place. As for where that young man had gone, it did not matter. Green had never intended to sneak in without making a sound anyway.
He approached the pyramid slowly, remaining on high alert. Before long, Green sensed the energy fluctuations coming from the pyramid. It was an extremely vast and ancient energy, like a primordial savage beast lying in wait, making him vaguely uneasy.
Green furrowed his brows and walked another dozen meters forward. Gradually, he sensed an invisible force field interfering with the connection between him and his undead summons. However, the interference was not severe. As long as they were not too far apart, its effects were minimal.
Green felt slightly relieved. He successively resummoned the Skeleton Soldiers he had withdrawn, arranged them into a battle formation, and advanced with his forces ready for anything until they reached the pyramid's entrance.
It was a square stone doorway more than two meters high. The doorway was open, and a staircase stretched upward inside, vanishing into the darkness. Gloomy winds swept through it, giving one a bone-chilling feeling, as though stepping inside would lead to some terrifying and dreadful realm.
As a Necromancer, Green naturally was not afraid of such an atmosphere. He directly ordered the undead forces inside, then followed behind them, holding a staff in one hand and a gun in the other, maintaining the highest level of alertness. They climbed the stairs for several minutes, yet still had not reached the end. Green frowned and guessed the trick behind it. Some kind of spatial magic had been used to stretch a short distance several times over. Clearly, the interior space of this pyramid could not be judged by its exterior height of merely a dozen meters.
However miraculous spatial magic might be, it still had its limits. After walking another dozen meters, they finally saw the exit—and there was light within.
Green halted the formation and once again ordered the Evil Spirit Maxim to conceal himself and scout ahead, using Visual Synchronization to observe the situation inside.
Maxim's figure blurred and vanished on the spot. In the next instant, Green's vision emerged from the stairway passage and entered a pyramid-shaped hall larger than a football field. There was not a single pillar inside, making it seem extremely spacious. The Evil Spirit floated in midair, giving him an even broader view.
At the center of the hall stood an obelisk engraved with intricate runes. A ball of light hung above its peak like a miniature sun, illuminating the entire hall.
Beneath the obelisk, more than a dozen people formed a circle. Light radiated from their bodies as they sat cross-legged on the ground. A huge ring-shaped magic array had formed beneath them and was slowly rotating, continuously drawing Psychic Energy from the ball of light above the obelisk.
After Visual Synchronization, what Green actually saw was the footage transmitted by the Evil Spirit Maxim. Maxim possessed excellent eyesight, and even from a considerable distance, he could see clearly that one of those dozen or so people was the young man from outside the pyramid. Another was David Tru, the pope of the Tower of Yin Spirits.
Green had seen portraits and photographs of David Tru, the cult leader, in more than one file. He had to admit that Tru was an exceptionally handsome and charismatic middle-aged man. Before founding the Tower of Yin Spirits, he had been an actor who performed in films and plays, and had even enjoyed some modest fame in the industry. Yet who would have thought that in a mere few years, he would become the head of the most rampant cult organization operating throughout the Northwest Province?
Green sighed inwardly, but did not hesitate in the slightest. Before the other side discovered his presence, he immediately ordered an all-out attack.
In an instant, dozens of Skeleton Soldiers, Ghouls, and Ghosts poured out of the stairway exit in one great rush, charging forward while maintaining their formation.
At that moment, the Evil Spirit Maxim floating in midair did not join the attack. Instead, he remained above them, serving as a relay satellite so Green could maintain Visual Synchronization. Looking down from above and watching his undead forces charge rapidly, Green felt as though he were playing a real-time strategy game.
At the same time, the dozen or so people seated around the obelisk noticed the disturbance and became alert. They all rose to their feet, abandoning their efforts to keep the magic array running.
This turn of events greatly displeased David Rute, who stood at the core of the magic array. Or perhaps he was no longer David Rute at that moment, but merely a portion of the consciousness of an Evil Spirit from beyond the void that had descended into him. David Rute slowly opened his eyes and rose from the ground. His mature, handsome face, calm when he was at peace, now bore a sinister and crazed expression. Yellow radiance flashed in his eyes, white vapor streamed from his mouth, and he let out a low growl.
The surrounding core figures of the Tower of Yin Spirits seemed to have long since grown accustomed to this. Or perhaps they had joined this obscure organization in the first place to obtain some of the power bestowed by the Void Yin Spirit. Once they gained that power, they would become like this as well.
"Who are you? How dare you disturb the ritual for worshiping the true god!" David Rute roared. When he saw that it was a group of undead creatures, a trace of contempt flashed through his eyes. "Filthy trash that refuses to stay dead dares profane the true god!" As he spoke, he raised the black staff in his hand and condensed a ball of light crackling with black sparks. With a fierce swing, he sent it flying straight toward the undead forces.
Green could not tell what kind of magic it was, but it was worlds apart from the Arcane Missile with which Doctor Wilkins had blasted Xiwell Rute. In particular, the black lightning ball flew far too slowly. The Ghouls and Skeleton Soldiers charging at the very front were all quite agile. With a whoosh, they split to both sides, forming a swallow-wing formation and exposing the Zombies, who were the slowest but had the thickest hides.
The next moment, the black lightning ball struck a Zombie with a bang. The tremendous impact and explosion sent the Zombie, weighing more than a hundred kilograms, tumbling. The iron-plated heavy armor over its chest was charred black and caved inward, but the Zombie merely climbed back to its feet as if nothing had happened and continued charging forward.
However, as a Necromancer, Green knew that the attack had been far less effortless than it appeared. It was only because the target was a Zombie, relying on its tough hide and abundant vitality, that it had endured it. Even so, it had lost nearly half its life force. Only because it was an undead creature had its combat power remained unaffected. If an ordinary Ghoul or Gun Skeleton Soldier had taken that hit, it would probably have been reduced to a sliver of health—or simply killed outright.
Yet from that attack, Green had also gauged the strength of the pope of the Tower of Yin Spirits. His control and understanding of magic remained at the level of an intermediate apprentice. He had merely relied on the power of the Void Yin Spirit to forcibly raise the spell's might to the level of an advanced apprentice. Against an opponent like this, Green felt no pressure at all. Setting aside everything else, either the Evil Spirit Maxim or the Hard-Skin Ghoul could kill him one-on-one.
David Rute, however, seemed completely unaware of this. He was quite confident in the power bestowed upon him by the Void Yin Spirit he worshiped. The failure of his first strike made him frown, and he immediately swung his staff, preparing a more powerful spell. This time, he was preparing to unleash his ultimate move and settle the matter with a single attack before the horde of undead reached him.
