Including the core members of the other Towers of Yin Spirits, none of them rushed to act when they saw David Root make a move. They knew David Root had received the favor of the Void Yin Spirit and possessed an immensely powerful spell. Forget a few dozen scattered undead rabble—even a formal knight order would be worth fighting.
However, what they had not expected was that, from over fifty meters away, the Skeleton Soldiers that had been charging forward suddenly halted. They actually raised their guns, took aim, and began firing in rapid succession!
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
A burst of frantic gunfire echoed through the pyramid hall.
Of the dozen or so people preparing to watch the show, five or six were shot down on the spot, including David Root, who had been about to cast a spell.
As the primary target, David Root endured the greatest concentration of fire. Seven or eight bullets punched through his chest and head. Agonizing pain tore through him, and even as he died, he could not understand why the Skeleton Soldiers had suddenly raised their guns and fired.
This was their fixed impression of Skeleton Soldiers. They believed them to be cannon fodder armed with rusty weapons, unable to defeat even an armed farmer. They had never expected Green's Skeleton Soldiers to be not only elite, but equipped with Enchanted Rifles. Caught completely off guard, they had no time to use their protective spells or defensive items.
And so David Root, the cult pope whose name struck terror into countless people throughout Northwest Province—a madman who had slaughtered without restraint, acted with utter impunity, and held even the kingdom government in contempt—fell flat on his back without even letting out a scream.
Only then did the others react, hurriedly drawing their weapons and activating defensive measures.
Those who could reach this place were all core members of the Tower of Yin Spirits, at least intermediate apprentices. Two of them were already Advanced Apprentice Knights. They spread their Battle Aura Shields, called out to one another, and coordinated their defense.
After succeeding with a single strike, Green did not blindly press forward. He ordered the charge to stop, pulled the Ghouls and Skeleton Soldiers back behind the Zombies, and began retreating slowly, as though he intended to stop while he was ahead after killing David Root. Yet in the shadows, Maxim the Evil Spirit and the five newly transformed Ghosts had all entered Spirit Body Concealment, silently circling around to the flank of the obelisk.
More than ten seconds later, as the undead force ceased its assault, the twelve remaining members of the Tower of Yin Spirits readied themselves for battle. Eager to strike back, they had no idea their retreat route had already been cut off.
Green still maintained Visual Synchronization with Maxim. Once he sensed that they were close enough, he immediately gave the order.
First came the Gun Skeleton Soldiers' fire preparation. A burst of rapid, chaotic gunfire drew the enemy's attention. Then Maxim the Evil Spirit led five Ghosts to materialize five or six meters behind the Tower of Yin Spirits' members, transforming into streaks of white shadows that shot toward the enemy like bolts of silk.
Although Ghosts and Evil Spirits could conceal their spirit bodies, once they launched an attack and their Psychic Energy fluctuated violently, they could no longer remain hidden.
And at the instant the attack began, Green's Visual Synchronization with Maxim was severed as well. He could only return to his own perspective and observe the battlefield from behind.
Even so, this ambush was still sufficiently concealed and sudden. Six people were hit on the spot, including two knights, one warrior, one thief, and two mages. All were intermediate apprentices. Focused only on the enemies in front of them, they had failed to guard against their rear. The Ghosts struck directly at their souls, killing four of them instantly. Only the two mages, their mental strength greater, did not die immediately—but they still fell unconscious.
"Not good! Behind us!"
The two Advanced Apprentice Knights at the front reacted the fastest. The instant Maxim and the five Ghosts revealed themselves, they noticed them and roared as they turned around—but they were already too late. They could only watch six people collapse together, then see several streams of white air rapidly leave their bodies and fly into the sky before flashing away and vanishing once more.
"Damn it, Ghosts!"
As extraordinary beings with considerable combat strength, they immediately recognized the culprits behind the ambush. They cast spells and slashed out Battle Aura in a chaotic flurry, but none of their attacks struck the targets.
Meanwhile, seeing that the ambush had succeeded, Green immediately ordered a general assault. The Hard-Skin Ghoul took the lead, leading the Ghoul squad to the front. The Gun Skeleton Soldiers provided covering fire, while the clumsy but immensely powerful Zombies flung their stiff legs wide and charged at full speed...
The battle did not last long. Before the slower Zombies could even reach the battlefield, the Ghost squad and Ghoul squad had completed the extermination under the Gun Skeleton Soldiers' fire support.
Including David Root, the corpses of seventeen people lay before Green. He searched them one by one, obtaining a large amount of Psychic Energy.
Only now did Green truly understand what it meant that a man could not grow rich without windfall wealth, just as a horse could not grow fat without night grass. These seventeen people alone had brought him over 2,200 Psychic Energy. Added to their weapons and magical items, if everything were exchanged for Psychic Energy, it would amount to at least 4,000.
But this was not the time to tally the spoils. Green controlled the Skeleton Soldiers to quickly clear the battlefield and carry all the seized magical items into the Graveyard. Then he turned his gaze toward the obelisk.
Though he did not know the origins of this ancient pyramid, Green was certain that it contained Psychic Energy—and an enormous quantity of it. Especially that obelisk, which was the core of the entire pyramid. If he could absorb the Psychic Energy within it into the Graveyard, it would not merely be several thousand, but tens of thousands.
Yet Green had a premonition that this time, things would probably not go as he wished.
Just as he approached the obelisk, a blinding burst of light suddenly erupted from within it. Green raised a hand to shield his face and retreated several steps. The Hard-Skin Ghoul flashed forward and stood before him. When the light faded, an exceptionally beautiful naked woman had appeared beneath the obelisk! She was in her twenties, with golden hair falling to her hips, a voluptuous figure, and incomparable sensuality. She wore nothing at all; only her long hair vaguely concealed her intimate places.
"Young warrior, thank you for saving me!" A gentle, amiable voice rang out, making people feel exceptionally comfortable.
Green frowned as he looked at the woman who had appeared so abruptly. He was not drawn in by her supremely seductive body. Instead, he remained highly vigilant and continued backing away as the nearby Ghouls and Zombies closed in.
The woman's gentle smile vanished, and her expression changed. She muttered, "Damn it," then flashed away, her figure retreating at once. She left behind only a shouted command: "Move!"
Immediately afterward, light and shadow flickered on both sides of the obelisk, revealing two figures. They flung off their cloaks and charged toward Green with roars.
"Invisibility Cloaks!"
Green suddenly understood. Magical items capable of invisibility were extremely rare. He had not expected to find two identical ones here.
The two men charging in were both close-combat fighters: one was a fist-blade warrior, the other a giant-axe warrior. Their long-prepared attacks carried tremendous force. The two Ghouls that rushed up to block them were easily sent flying. Like two maddened bulls, they charged straight toward Green.
