If that was the case, why had Zhang Yang appeared again?
And why had Zhang Yang appeared at Kamar-Taj?
She had traveled for so long, yet she had never encountered Zhang Yang at all.
So how exactly had Zhang Yang appeared at Kamar-Taj?
Unable to find an answer to the question troubling her mind,
The Ancient One found herself in a dilemma.
Just then, Zhang Yang spoke. "What problem is there?"
Zhang Yang's words pulled The Ancient One from her thoughts.
What Zhang Yang was asking about was clearly what was wrong with the magic he had just cast.
After all, Zhang Yang had no idea
that the problem The Ancient One had mentioned was an issue with his identity.
However, The Ancient One was no pushover either.
Although she had never heard of Fear Magic, since she had just intended to keep it from Zhang Yang and had tacitly accepted that Fear Magic was Kamar-Taj magic, she could not reveal the truth now.
"What do you think is the primary function of Fear Magic?"
The Ancient One asked Zhang Yang.
Though it sounded as if she were asking whether Zhang Yang understood the question,
in truth, The Ancient One simply wanted to know what Fear Magic was.
But she could not ask Wong directly, so she changed tactics and asked Zhang Yang instead.
Zhang Yang did not think much of it. Taking it as a test from The Ancient One, he said, "Fear Magic is a type of Mind Magic. It uses one's own energy to create an invisible sense of pressure and fear in the enemy. It is released through the eyes. It makes people afraid, fearful, unable to meet your gaze, panic, scream, and even suffer mental breakdowns until they lose their sanity."
Zhang Yang repeated every word of the nonsense Wong had made up to The Ancient One.
It left The Ancient One completely dumbfounded.
"Is there anything else?" The Ancient One asked.
Zhang Yang shook his head. "No. Wong only taught me that much."
The Ancient One turned her gaze to Wong, speechless.
Was that how magic was taught?
The Ancient One could tell at once that it was made-up nonsense, yet Zhang Yang had actually comprehended something from it?
The key point was that there had not even been any incantations.
It was nothing more than an introduction to the name of a spell!
And that was enough?
Zhang Yang could learn it from that?
No, this was not learning at all!
He had clearly created a brand-new spell himself!
The Ancient One was not the only one stunned.
Mordo and the temple mages beside them were stunned as well.
Though Mordo had not believed it at first, after Zhang Yang's spell had nearly scared him into running away, he believed it.
Mordo had originally thought that the Fear Magic Zhang Yang learned might have been some new spell Wong had discovered while reading in the library.
But after hearing Zhang Yang say this,
Mordo was completely dumbfounded.
It was obviously made-up nonsense meant to fool outsiders who had never encountered magic.
This stuff!
Zhang Yang had actually managed to turn it into magic?
No way!
No way!
Could something this absurd really happen?
Mordo was utterly stunned as he blankly looked toward The Ancient One.
By coincidence, The Ancient One was looking at him too.
No, to be precise, all the mages in the temple were looking at each other before collectively turning their gazes toward Wong.
Wong lowered his head awkwardly, feeling terribly embarrassed.
Just then, Zhang Yang's puzzled voice broke the awkwardness in the temple. "The Sorcerer Supreme just asked whether there was anything else. Does Fear Magic have some essence that I failed to learn?"
Zhang Yang's words not only broke the awkward silence,
but also brought The Ancient One and the others back to their senses.
Everyone looked toward The Ancient One now, seemingly wanting to know how she would answer this question.
The Ancient One suddenly smiled.
Her smile was kind, but she said nothing, merely shaking her head meaningfully.
After a long moment, she slowly said, "Zhang Yang, do you believe magic exists?"
Zhang Yang frowned, not knowing what The Ancient One meant. He nodded and said, "Of course it exists."
He was learning it himself. How could it not exist?
"What about before you came to Kamar-Taj? Did you believe it existed then?" The Ancient One continued.
Zhang Yang shook his head.
Before learning magic, Zhang Yang had not even transmigrated yet.
If someone had asked Zhang Yang whether he wanted to learn magic, he would definitely have thought that person was insane.
"You did not believe because you had not seen it with your own eyes. But after seeing it for yourself, you believed in magic, right?" The Ancient One asked as she looked at Zhang Yang.
"Mm." Zhang Yang nodded. That was indeed how it was.
The Ancient One nodded. "That is how the world of magic works. It exists only when you believe in it. So first, you must believe in magic. Believe that this world can be changed. Believe that your magic can achieve the results you desire. Only then can you better grasp the mysteries of magic."
The Ancient One spoke earnestly.
Those words were not something The Ancient One had made up.
They were merely some very simple principles.
Of course, such words could apply to the study of any magic.
Such vague, all-purpose words.
As expected of the Sorcerer Supreme, the surrounding mages were left utterly bewildered by them.
Everyone turned their eyes toward Zhang Yang again.
"So the Sorcerer Supreme means that my problem is that I do not believe in magic enough?" Zhang Yang could not help asking as he looked at The Ancient One.
The Ancient One shook her head. "It is that you do not believe in yourself enough."
Those words made Zhang Yang pause.
What he lacked was faith in himself?
"Do you understand what I said?" Seeing Zhang Yang frown, The Ancient One could not help asking.
Zhang Yang shook his head. "I need to think about it."
The Ancient One nodded. "Then go back and think about it. You are a very promising talent. If you believe in yourself more, your future will be limitless."
The Ancient One's words seemed to affirm Zhang Yang.
They gave Zhang Yang an unusual sense of resolve. He hurriedly said to The Ancient One, "Yes, Sorcerer Supreme. I will believe in myself more."
With that, Zhang Yang happily left.
The mages could not help sighing. As expected of the Sorcerer Supreme—her ability to fool people was something else. In just a short while, she had completely shifted the subject.
No one mentioned Fear Magic again at all.
But if they really had to talk about Fear Magic,
even The Ancient One probably would not have known how to make something up.
After all, that thing did not exist at Kamar-Taj in the first place.
Only Wong was frantic. He pleaded with The Ancient One, "Sorcerer Supreme, do not let him think anymore! If he keeps thinking, he'll defy the heavens!"
The Sorcerer Supreme knew far too little about Zhang Yang!
She absolutely could not let Zhang Yang go back and think anymore!
Even a random made-up sentence could be understood by Zhang Yang with perfect clarity.
He could even think it through so thoroughly that it made you doubt your life!
Chapter 46
When other people said they would go back and think about it, they really did think, though whether they could figure it out was another matter.
But Zhang Yang was different.
When he said he would go back and think, he would basically spend another seven, eight, nine, or ten years cultivating!
Sigh...
So infuriating...
Wong shook his head.
After Zhang Yang left, The Ancient One turned her gaze to the frowning Mordo. "Mordo, what do you think?"
Mordo stepped forward with a solemn expression. "Master, I do not think someone like him should remain at Kamar-Taj. The magical energy within him is far too powerful. He does not resemble an apprentice at all. Yet I have never seen him at Kamar-Taj before. Someone like that would be too dangerous at Kamar-Taj."
That was Mordo's opinion.
Forget calling Zhang Yang an apprentice—even if someone claimed he was a great mage who had cultivated for over a decade, Mordo would believe it.
There was no way someone could possess that level of energy after studying magic for only a week.
No matter whether others believed it or not, Mordo certainly did not!
The Ancient One said nothing and merely looked at Wong. "Wong, what do you think?"
Wong's view was completely different from Mordo's. "Master, I do not think so. Zhang Yang is young, highly perceptive, and humble. Though I have not taught him for long, I can be certain that he had never encountered magic before. He is simply more talented than most."
Wong spoke with complete sincerity.
To be fair, if Wong had not taught Zhang Yang himself, his thoughts would probably have been much the same as Mordo's.
After all, Wong would not have believed in such monstrous talent before.
But after teaching Zhang Yang,
Wong understood.
The gap between people truly could be more than just a little.
"Talent? What kind of talent can accumulate such powerful magical energy in one week?!" Mordo glared coldly at Wong. "I believe Zhang Yang absolutely cannot remain at Kamar-Taj. Honestly, I simply do not believe that he is just talented." Mordo stood by his opinion.
He did not agree with Wong's words.
After saying that, Mordo looked at The Ancient One. "Sorcerer Supreme, I do not believe someone like him can remain at Kamar-Taj. Zhang Yang could very well become a hidden danger! He could even be a hidden danger to Earth itself. I suggest exile!"
Mordo said this with absolute certainty.
When he spoke the word "exile," Wong panicked. "Senior Brother! Absolutely not!"
That Zhang Yang...
