"These are only suspicions. We have no concrete evidence, so don't let word get out before anything happens," the Third Hokage said thoughtfully. "I'll station several former Root elites here long-term to protect and assist you.
"If anything goes wrong, they'll buy you time. Even Fugaku wouldn't dare reveal himself openly in Konoha. He'd have to resort to assassination."
A cold glint flashed in Danzo's eyes. He hoped Fugaku would make his move soon. Once Fugaku's actions came to light, the entire Uchiha clan would be thrown onto the defensive.
Everything the Uchiha had achieved would come to nothing, and Fugaku, the young Uchiha who had risen so recently, would likely end up just like him.
In Danzo's view, the hardest thing to counter about the Mangekyo Sharingan was Susanoo. If Fugaku intended to assassinate him, he certainly couldn't use Susanoo. Doing so would expose him to countless Konoha ninja.
In a close-quarters fight, Danzo was confident he could escape unscathed with the help of several Root ninja.
"I'll look through the village records on the Mangekyo Sharingan as soon as I can," Homura said. "Both the First and Second Hokage dealt with it.
"There may be no detailed accounts, but perhaps we can piece together something useful from the fragments they left behind."
Danzo looked at his three companions. "The best way to stop Uchiha Tenjo from running for an Elder's seat is still to manufacture a case. It's also the fastest way.
"Don't forget what we did back when we wanted to send troops into the Land of Rain."
The three fell silent. When Sunagakure and Iwagakure had sent troops into the Land of Rain, Konoha had split into two camps: one wanted war, the other peace.
That was when Root had sent ninja to kill two Elders
