Background and History
Chi Hong received Charmander as his starter Pokémon and raised it through frequent battles. Its defeat of a Wind Baboon caused it to evolve into Charmeleon. At Shrek Academy, Charmeleon defeated Wang Dong and evolved again, becoming Charizard 1.
Chi Hong summoned Charmander when he awakened his Martial Soul at six years old. In their early battles, Charmander could defeat only ten-year Soul Beasts at best; Chi Hong personally handled stronger opponents and allowed his partner to watch and learn 11 65 76.
Charizard became Chi Hong’s principal battler and mount. It carried him past teacher Zhou Yi in a hundred-lap race, fought alongside the newly evolved Greninja, and won matches throughout the Freshman Assessment. Mu En later awakened its Solar Power, while the Flame Plate brought its fire close to Ultimate Fire 3 5 7 12 13 15.
During the expedition to the Far North, Charizard carried Chi Hong through the cold without its tail flame weakening. It later provoked the Ice Jade Scorpions and drew their colony away, allowing Chi Hong and Greninja to approach the Ultimate Ice pillar containing the Ice Pillar Plate 16 17.
Charizard also faced Ma Xiaotao when her evil fire became unstable. Its Ultimate Fire suppressed her flames, and Flamethrower blocked her Phoenix Fire Line. However, its cultivation was insufficient to withstand her stronger Phoenix Cloud-Piercing Strike, prompting Chi Hong to intervene with Ice Empress Protection 23.
During the Continental Advanced Soul Master Tournament, Charizard’s growth stalled at 9,999 years. After consuming a Source of Life and sleeping while it strengthened its bloodline, it returned at the ten-thousand-year level. Chi Hong Mega Evolved it in the final against Sun Moon Imperial Academy 36 37 39 45 46.
Mega Charizard X used Dragon Dance to strengthen itself before breaking through the Sun Moon Team’s defenses with Flare Blitz and incapacitating four members. It later joined Greninja and Lucario in shattering the Hongchen siblings’ Martial Soul Fusion Skill, then overcame Ma Rulong’s Sword of Judgment with Outrage. Its lingering frenzy caused it to attack Ma Rulong after his concession, but Chi Hong’s command stopped it, and the Mystery Plate helped soothe its agitation. Heavenly Fiend Douluo nevertheless struck Charizard and threatened to kill it, leading Chi Hong to stand in front of his Pokémon 46 48.
In the Far North, Charizard participated in Mew’s efforts to deepen Chi Hong’s bonds with his partners, reaching 96 friendship through playful interaction. It subsequently helped test the newly captured Snow Empress’s strength, only for her Emperor Sword to freeze and cut apart its Fire Fang. Charizard escaped the descending sword by flying clear 54 57.
Charizard accompanied Chi Hong into Star Dou Forest, fighting Soul Beasts alongside Greninja and Lucario during five days of travel to the core region. By the encounter with the Three-Eyed Golden Lion, its age level had reached eighteen thousand years. The Meadow Plate later strengthened its life force and Dragon Bloodline 64 65 73.
At the Lake of Life, Mega Charizard X and Bond-form Greninja fought Zi JI, with Lucario providing ranged support. Charizard’s blue flames pressured her Yin Water, while Dragon Dance and Tough Claws allowed it to contest her in close combat. Although Zi JI repeatedly injured it, Charizard rose at Chi Hong’s encouragement, controlled Outrage, and unleashed Blaze. Its flames and Greninja’s ultimate ice water began forming rudimentary domains capable of contending with her Devouring Domain 79 80 82.
Chi Hong later arranged a teaching contest with Di Tian: Charizard would train under the Golden-Eyed Black Dragon for a month, while Chi Hong trained Zi JI and Di Qiu’er. Charizard was to face Di Qiu’er afterward. Before sending it back to Di Tian, Chi Hong empowered its Mega form with the Dragon Plate, while Palkia awakened its spatial talent. Charizard promptly combined space with its fire to develop Rift-Splitting Dragon Flame and teleported toward the Lake of Life to continue learning 94 95 97.
Charizard eventually returned to Chi Hong with improved spatial control and carried him toward the Sun Moon Empire. Over Mingdu, Mega Charizard X fought Solar Douluo Xu Tianyuan, using Blazing Inferno and its Azure Domain to overwhelm his Solar Domain and injure him. When Xu Tianyuan retaliated with his ninth soul skill, Solar Annihilation, Di Qiu’er confronted the attack with Golden Dragon Soaring the Heavens 119 120.
Appearance
Charizard is a large, winged fire dragon. Its crimson coloring briefly turned golden when Mu En awakened its latent power 1 7.
- A flame burns at the tip of its tail, growing more intense when it is excited or empowered 1 4 7.
- Its Mega Charizard X form has a more intimidating, purer dragon aura; it is described as a black dragon in Dragon City 46 59.
- Mega Evolution changes its hide to grayish-black, sharpens its horns, and produces blue blade-like projections at the front and back of its shoulders. Deep-blue flames burn at its mouth and tail 46.
- When it controls Outrage and activates Blaze against Zi JI, deep-blue flames surround the red steam rising from its body 82.
- After awakening spatial talent, both its flames and its body can flicker in and out of sight as it manipulates space 97.
Personality
Charizard loves battling and takes pride in being Chi Hong’s strongest Pokémon. It competes openly with Greninja, acts smug when it gains an advantage, and rejects the idea that newcomer Riolu might surpass it. As a Charmander, it was gentler and more affectionate; Chi Hong compares its later behavior to that of a hot-tempered teenager 4 16 28.
Its bravado has limits: Charizard trembles around Huo Yuhao’s skeletons while pretending not to be afraid. It nevertheless places itself between Chi Hong and Zhou Yi, obeys Chi Hong’s call to stop after using Outrage, and shows affection through physical play 3 24 48 54.
Charizard’s competitiveness extends to its trainer. After Chi Hong protected it from Ma Xiaotao, it briefly became dejected at being weaker than him, then resolved to surpass him as well. Greninja’s acquisition of Ultimate Water and new ice techniques later prompted Charizard to form a temporary alliance with Riolu against their increasingly powerful teammate 23 33.
It remains eager to improve even after severe defeats. Once recovered from its battle with Zi JI, it immediately wanted another fight, and it recognized the transformed Di Qiu’er as a worthy opponent. Although Di Tian’s dragon might initially intimidated it, Charizard rekindled its fighting spirit and willingly accepted his instruction as a means of growing stronger 95.
Abilities and Skills
Fire attacks and abilities
- Blaze increases the power of Fire-type moves by 50% when Charizard’s health falls below one-third 8.
- Solar Power increases special-attack power by 50% in harsh sunlight but drains health when Charizard uses moves. The health loss can help trigger Blaze 7 8.
- Flame Plate blessing strengthens its Fire-type moves by 20%; its Solar Fire can rival Ultimate Fire 15.
- Its fire attacks include Flamethrower, Blazing Inferno, Flare Blitz, Fire Spin, Heat Wave, and Fire Fang. Its Solar Fire burned through the Lan sisters’ Heavenly Net, though Greninja had to extinguish the spreading flames before they reached the sisters 8 9 13 28 36 57.
- At an age level of 3,412 years, the combined activation of Blaze and Solar Power allowed Blazing Inferno to rival a ten-thousand-year soul skill 8.
- Its Ultimate Fire can suppress Ma Xiaotao’s Evil Fire Phoenix, although elemental superiority alone did not allow it to withstand her higher-level soul skills 23.
- Zi JI described Mega Charizard X’s blue flames as surpassing Ultimate Fire. Even her Yin Water had difficulty completely absorbing them 80.
- Its Mega-form panel lists Solar Fire as its hidden ability. Later battles confirm that it can still activate Blaze in this form 46 82.
- By the battle over Mingdu, Charizard appeared able to release Solar Power independently and at will. Its surrounding blue Ultimate Fire strengthened by a further 30% before it deployed its domain 120.
Flight and combat
- Charizard can carry Chi Hong over long distances, though a flight to the Far North left it tired enough to use Roost 3 16.
- Its documented attacks include Air Cutter, Wing Attack, Dragon Breath, and Dragon Claw. In the Continental tournament, Scary Face helped frighten Tianling Academy before Fire Spin defeated its seven-member team 1 5 10 26 36.
- Other documented moves include Ember, Smokescreen, Slash, Air Slash, Earthquake, Thunder Punch, Fire Punch, and Dragon Rush 3 8 46.
- It can combine elemental and physical attacks. Against Zi JI, it followed Flamethrower into close combat, used Dragon Claw to occupy her, and struck with Thunder Punch while Greninja’s ice storm weakened her 80.
- Chi Hong deliberately uses close-range battles to develop Charizard’s physical abilities rather than relying only on its strengths in special attacks and speed. He treats its attributes as capable of continued growth rather than subject to the games’ fixed stat limits 11.
Mega Evolution
- Charizard requires a ten-thousand-year age level and 90 friendship for Mega Evolution. Chi Hong activates Charizardite X with his Key Stone 37 45.
- As Mega Charizard X, it becomes Fire/Dragon type. Tough Claws increases the power of contact-based physical moves by 30% 46.
- Its Mega-form moves include Dragon Dance and Outrage. Outrage helped it overpower Ma Rulong’s Sword of Judgment, but left it dangerously enraged until Chi Hong called it to stop 46 48.
- Its first Mega-form panel recorded an age level of 10,000 years and intimacy of 92/100 46.
- Dragon Dance and Tough Claws together raised its physical power enough to briefly contest Zi JI’s claws despite her cultivation exceeding two hundred thousand years 80.
- Outrage + Dragon Claw releases its concentrated Dragon-type energy in a powerful assault. Against Zi JI, this combination broke through her domain’s suppression and briefly forced her backward 82.
- Charizard subsequently brought Outrage under control while enduring Zi JI’s pressure. It could then combine that power with Blaze, and later with Flare Blitz and Tough Claws, rather than remaining overwhelmed by its frenzy 82 83.
Bloodline and spatial abilities
- Meadow Plate enhancement strengthened Charizard’s life force and Dragon Bloodline. Di Tian, who had previously considered its dragon blood weak, recognized its development into a genuine dragon 73.
- Dragon Plate empowerment further awakened Mega Charizard X’s potential and strengthened its blue Ultimate Fire 97.
- Spatial talent was granted through Palkia’s intervention during the Dragon Plate empowerment. Palkia’s spatial ripples modified Charizard’s bloodline, and it immediately grasped how to incorporate space into its flames 97.
- Rift-Splitting Dragon Flame sends deep-blue fire through space, causing it to disappear in transit and manifest directly at its target. Its demonstrated strike annihilated a broad area of vegetation without leaving ash; the flames burn space to erase their targets at once rather than merely continuing to burn them. The technique is described as instantaneous, with a 100% hit rate and no possibility of evasion 97.
- Teleportation allows Mega Charizard X to disappear from one location and reappear elsewhere. It used this ability immediately after its spatial awakening and later demonstrated improved control when returning to Chi Hong 97 119.
- Di Tian agreed to teach Charizard for a month and promised to improve Dragon Claw until it could tear apart a hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast in one swipe. This was a training objective, rather than a demonstrated feat at the time of the arrangement 95.
Domain
- Rudimentary fire domain first emerged during the battle with Zi JI. After Charizard controlled Outrage and activated Blaze, its red-and-blue flames suppressed her Devouring Domain; together with Greninja’s emerging elemental domain, it reached a standoff against her 82.
- Azure Domain is its developed domain, demonstrated over Mingdu. Charizard gathers and compresses its flames into a piercing blue-white radiance before spreading a transparent blue field across the sky. No ordinary flames appear within it because the ultimate fiery light has vaporized the gas inside 120.
- Azure Domain overwhelmed Xu Tianyuan’s Solar Domain and injured him, establishing Charizard’s ability to contest a Titled Douluo’s domain directly 120.
Equipment and Items
- Poké Ball — Charizard is summoned through Chi Hong’s ordinary Poké Ball, which corresponds to his first soul ring 1 3.
- Source of Life — strengthened Charizard’s bloodline during a long sleep, allowing it to withstand Mega Evolution 39.
- Charizardite X — the Mega Stone on Charizard’s collar; activated in response to Chi Hong’s Key Stone 45 46.
- Plate-derived enhancements — Charizard benefits from Chi Hong’s Flame Plate, Meadow Plate, and Dragon Plate. These are sources of elemental, life-force, and bloodline enhancement rather than items recorded as being held by Charizard 15 73 97.
Relationships
- Chi Hong — trainer and first partner. Charizard follows his battle commands, shields him from danger, and responds to his voice even after Outrage takes hold 1 3 48. They have been together since Chi Hong was six. Their playful interaction arranged by Mew raised Charizard’s friendship to 96, while Chi Hong’s encouragement later helped it rise after Zi JI’s attacks and control Outrage 54 65 82.
- Greninja — teammate and rival. They train together despite their conflicting elements, and each watches the other’s progress closely 6 7 16. In the battle against Zi JI, Charizard’s Flamethrower interrupted an attack on Greninja, while Greninja later intercepted Purple Demonic Flame aimed at Charizard. Their emerging domains jointly resisted Zi JI’s Devouring Domain 80 82.
- Lucario — teammate whose rapid growth draws Charizard’s competitive attention. Lucario heals Charizard before its duel with Ma Rulong 28 48. While Lucario was still Riolu, the two formed a temporary alliance in response to Greninja’s growing elemental advantages 33.
- Mu En — awakened Charizard’s Solar Power and later entrusted Chi Hong with the Flame Plate, which further strengthened it 7 15.
- Darkrai — defeated Charizard, Greninja, and Lucario together in a sparring match with Dark Void; the loss spurred the three to seek more battles 58 64.
- Mew — helped deepen Charizard’s bond with Chi Hong. Mew transformed into another Charizard so that the two could bounce their trainer between them during Charizard’s requested game 54.
- Snow Empress — teammate whose Emperor Sword overpowered Charizard’s Fire Fang during a practice test. Her strength shocked Charizard despite its confidence that it could hold back for her 57.
- Zi JI — powerful sparring opponent who later became a teammate. Their battle forced Charizard to develop control over Outrage and approach the domain threshold; Zi JI came to acknowledge it as a worthy dragon and opponent. Charizard remained eager for a rematch after recovering 80 82 95.
- Di Tian — mentor under Chi Hong’s month-long teaching contest. His dragon might initially intimidated Charizard, but its renewed fighting spirit earned his approval. He undertook to improve its Dragon Claw, and Chi Hong also wanted Charizard to learn from his expertise in spatial power 94 95 97.
- Di Qiu’er / Three-Eyed Golden Lion — teammate and intended opponent in the teaching contest. On meeting her transformed appearance, Charizard recognized that she had become strong enough that it would need Mega Evolution to contend with her 94 95.
- Palkia — granted Charizard spatial talent by modifying its bloodline during the Dragon Plate empowerment, enabling teleportation and Rift-Splitting Dragon Flame 97.
