Cultivation and Power

Soul Beasts’ strength is commonly expressed as years of cultivation. Age alone does not determine a fight: a four-thousand-year Darkgolden Terrorclaw Bear can hunt ordinary ten-thousand-year Soul Beasts, while Charizard’s strength exceeds what his cultivation age initially suggests 2 64.

Pokémon summoned by Chi Hong are commonly described and assessed as Soul Beasts by Douluo’s inhabitants, and their strength is recorded in cultivation years. Gu Yuena nevertheless recognizes that these creatures are not native Soul Beasts and likely originate from another world. Chi Hong distinguishes his first Martial Soul, which communicates with that world and summons its divine beasts, from his second, which contracts Douluo’s Soul Beasts and accelerates their growth 3 71.

Power Progression

• Tribulations and mortality: Long-lived Soul Beasts face heavenly tribulations. The Ice Empress fears death and is drawn to Chi Hong’s promise that partnership might offer a path toward godhood 19 65.
• Restricted summoned strength: A contract does not necessarily grant immediate access to a beast’s full cultivation. The Ice Empress initially can use only ten-thousand-year strength because of her low bond with Chi Hong and his weak body 20.
• Ten-thousand-year threshold: Crossing from thousand-year to ten-thousand-year cultivation greatly improves a Soul Beast’s body and Inner Focus. Its intelligence also develops rapidly, eventually reaching a level no lower than a human’s 36.
• Natural and accelerated growth: Ordinary Soul Beasts grow through cultivation and can accelerate their development with treasures. The ability of Chi Hong’s companions to gain cultivation and evolve during battles is therefore regarded as extraordinary rather than a normal characteristic of Soul Beasts 6 26 38.
• Battle experience: Chi Hong’s companions gain strength from victories against both Soul Masters and Soul Beasts; killing is not required. Even the Ice Empress gains cultivation through battle after contracting with him 1 26.
• Human rebirth and transformation: The Snow Empress attempts to escape her tribulation by cultivating anew as a human, leaving her vulnerable to capture during the embryo stage. This differs from a Soul Beast merely assuming human form while retaining its Soul Beast nature, as the Ice Empress does 43 60 65.
• Recovery after rebirth: The Snow Empress initially retains a recorded age of seven hundred thousand years but only ten-thousand-year usable cultivation. She later recovers her memories and strength 57 105.

Bloodlines, Attributes and Evolved Talents

• Bloodline suppression: A sufficiently superior bloodline can intimidate a weaker Soul Beast independently of ordinary combat strength. The Ice Empress struggles to muster resistance against Ho-Oh’s divine aura, which she perceives as belonging to a million-year, god-realm beast 19.
• Ultimate attributes: Exceptional beasts possess attributes such as the Ice Empress’s Ultimate Ice and the Three-Eyed Golden Lion’s Ultimate Fire and Ultimate Light. Bloodline and attribute advantages can allow a beast to challenge opponents with much greater cultivation 20 65 66.
• Bloodline purification: Chi Hong uses the Flame Plate’s Ultimate Solar Fire to purify the Three-Eyed Golden Lion’s Golden Dragon bloodline and awaken Ultimate Strength. The Mystery Plate simultaneously strengthens her mental power 76.
• Life-force enhancement: The Meadow Plate’s Law of Life transforms Bi Ji’s vitality and control over life. Gu Yuena judges that she can now face her six-hundred-thousand-year tribulation independently, while Bi Ji believes that only Di Tian and the Evil Emperor among Soul Beasts can still kill her 73 74.
• Spatial talent: Palkia’s power and the Dragon Plate further purify Di Qiu’er, Zi Ji and Charizard’s dragon bloodlines and awaken spatial talents. Charizard develops Rift-Splitting Dragon Flame, while Zi Ji’s spatially enhanced Devouring Domain can devour and annihilate Feng Ling’s powerful Evil Phoenix Sun 97 107.
• Combat strength beyond age: Di Qiu’er kills Titled Douluo despite not emitting a hundred-thousand-year aura. Bi Ji observes that her growth has taken her from fighting ordinary hundred-thousand-year beasts to killing Titled Douluo within approximately a month 106 107.

Godhood

The inability of Soul Beasts to attain godhood through their existing cultivation path is central to Chi Hong’s negotiations with their leaders. He tells Gu Yuena that reaching Level 99 Limit Douluo would allow him to create divine seats and establish a Divine Realm suited to Soul Beasts. This remains a promised future solution rather than an advancement already achieved by his native contracted companions 50 71.

Gu Yuena agrees to provide Plates on the condition that Chi Hong prioritize helping Di Tian become the first Soul Beast god under their proposed arrangement. She refuses to let Di Tian form a contract with him, showing that their cooperation does not require every participating beast to become his Soul Ring 72.

The summoned divine beasts also demonstrate powers beyond the normal cultivation hierarchy. Tang San assesses Xerneas and Yveltal as comparable to First-Level Gods and Zygarde’s giant form as comparable to a God King. Separately, Niu Tian and Tai Tan have already ascended to the Divine Realm, although Tang San privately regards them as only low-ranking divine officers 113 117.

Humans and Soul Beasts

• Soul Rings and Soul Bones: Powerful beasts are valuable to Soul Masters for what their deaths can provide. A captured Soul Beast embryo draws bids partly because it could yield a hundred-thousand-year Soul Ring and Soul Bone 19 43.
• Contracts instead of killing: Chi Hong’s second Martial Soul lets him capture a Soul Beast he has defeated and gain a Soul Ring while keeping it alive as a companion. He can use a contracted beast’s abilities and Soul Skills himself 3 19 20.
• Trust remains separate from a contract: The Ice Empress’s initial bond rating is zero, marked “Hatred,” despite being contracted. Cooperation and cultivation sessions gradually improve their connection 20 21.
• Conflict over hunting: Chi Hong argues that unchecked hunting has reduced Soul Beast populations and driven species extinct. The Scarlet King, in turn, regards contracts with humans as submission rather than partnership 50 65.
• Contractual restrictions: Chi Hong initially identifies defeating a Soul Beast himself as a prerequisite for capture, and his Advanced Poké Balls prevent successfully captured beasts from betraying him. Later contracts with Bi Ji, Di Qiu’er and Zi Ji are made with their willing acceptance and without mental resistance 3 75 91 93.
• Symbiosis and tribulation survival: The Ice Empress describes her arrangement as a symbiotic contract: Chi Hong helped her survive her four-hundred-thousand-year tribulation, and she protects him in return 65.
• Prospective wider adoption: Chi Hong proposes spreading the Poké Ball contract system so that human Soul Masters would no longer need to hunt Soul Beasts for advancement. Mu En also recognizes his bonds with his companions as evidence that peaceful coexistence may be possible 7 72.
• Equal companionship: Chi Hong explicitly tells Bi Ji that becoming his Soul Ring makes her his equal companion rather than his subordinate. Her initial cooperation rests partly on mutual interests and the Meadow Plate’s life force, but witnessing his sincerity toward his partners leads her to acknowledge him more fully 84 85.

Cooperation with Star Dou’s Leaders

Bi Ji learns of Chi Hong’s actions through information gathered from humans and injured Soul Beasts, then reports them to Di Tian. After examining his companions’ condition, she agrees that one of her kin may accompany him if he guarantees its safety and proper treatment 69.

Di Tian subsequently agrees to provide a young Jade Swan and Golden-Eyed Black Dragon. Chi Hong requests beasts under a hundred years old because he can raise their cultivation quickly and considers infants easier to nurture than older beasts with established personalities and wild instincts. Di Tian makes their protection and proper upbringing a condition of the arrangement 70.

The eventual contracted companions differ from that initial request. Bi Ji herself becomes Chi Hong’s third Soul Ring, the Three-Eyed Golden Lion becomes his fourth and receives the name Di Qiu’er, and Zi Ji willingly becomes his fifth. Their contracts establish cooperation with several of Star Dou’s most exceptional beasts rather than merely adding young specimens to his team 75 91 93.

Changing Attitudes and Continuing Risks

The Three-Eyed Golden Lion initially rejects Chi Hong’s proposal, but seeing his memories changes her judgment. His protection of his companions, confrontation with hostile humans and revival of the Snow Empress convince her that he genuinely seeks a future for Soul Beasts. She subsequently asks to accompany him so that she can experience real battles, grow stronger and eventually protect the Star Dou Forest herself 77 83 84.

Di Tian, Bi Ji and Chi Hong initially oppose her departure because her safety is vital to the forest. Gu Yuena nevertheless accepts Chi Hong as a potential partner and permits the Auspicious Beast to see the outside world, while warning her that other humans may deceive her. Di Qiu’er ultimately joins after insisting that Chi Hong honor their agreement 83 84 91.

Cooperation does not remove political suspicion. Gu Yuena questions whether Chi Hong will continue supporting Soul Beasts after becoming a god and confronting the Divine Realm’s human God Kings. She later sends Zi Ji to accompany him as part of a plan to influence and control him through the Dragon Plate 72 93.

The contracted beasts also fight collectively in human conflicts. At the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, the Ice and Snow Empresses kill Mask Douluo, Di Qiu’er attacks the Holy Spirit Cult’s other Douluo, and Zi Ji battles Feng Ling while Bi Ji and the Ice Empress protect the surrounding herbs. Later, Chi Hong’s summoned companions overwhelm large numbers of Sun Moon Imperial Academy students and teachers 105 106 107 122.

Habitats and Notable Beasts

• Far North: Dangerous Soul Beasts hide and hunt across its snowy terrain. The Ice Empress and Snow Empress are powerful figures associated with the region 17 65.
• Star Dou Forest: Chi Hong encounters Soul Beasts from the outskirts toward the core. Its Three-Eyed Golden Lion is an Imperial Auspicious Beast whose presence increases the growth rate of Soul Beasts throughout the forest 64 65.
• Jade Swans: A rare race sought by Chi Hong for its exceptional healing ability. He hopes to negotiate with Bi Ji for a willing companion rather than hunt one 64 65.
• Darkgolden Terrorclaw Bear: A four-thousand-year specimen has claws capable of threatening a ten-thousand-year beast, but Darkrai defeats it during Chi Hong’s journey 64.
• Lake of Life: A central meeting place for Star Dou’s powerful Soul Beasts, where Chi Hong negotiates with Di Tian and Gu Yuena. Its life energy supports the surrounding beasts, although Bi Ji finds the Meadow Plate’s Law of Life superior to what the lake provides 69 70 73.
• Bi Ji: Star Dou’s strongest healing Soul Beast, who visits the outskirts to treat injured beasts and gather information. As Chi Hong’s contracted Jade Swan, her Jadeite Heart strengthens healing, provides passive recovery to allies, protects against negative conditions and can expend her vitality to prevent an ally from falling to fatal damage 69 75.
• Di Qiu’er: The contracted name of the Three-Eyed Golden Lion. As the forest’s vessel of destiny and core of fortune, she possesses destiny manipulation and strong resistance to mental attacks. Her Golden Dragon Spear can intimidate and command ordinary Soul Beasts through its draconic pressure 91.
• Zi Ji: The Hell Demon Dragon King and ninth-ranked Ferocious Beast. Her Yin Water combines darkness and water, while her devouring abilities absorb opponents’ Soul Power and convert it into recovery 84 94.
• Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well: A treasured site in the Sunset Forest containing intelligent immortal herbs and the remnants of dragon powers. Chi Hong uses its environment to replenish the Snow Empress’s essence, while his contracted beasts guard the site against the Holy Spirit Cult 100 102 105 107.
