Cultivation Ages and Known Types

Soul Beast Documented age Encounter
Rabbit-type Soul Beast Around 10 years Chu Heng kills one for food; its pale white Soul Ring is too weak for his first ring 16.
Black-Spotted Pig 50 years Chu Heng hunts one after running out of food 17.
Wind-Chasing Leopard Roughly 70–80 years Attacks Chu Heng during his first solo survival trial, then retreats 14 15.
Energy-Type Falcon A little over 200 years Its presence makes Chu Heng’s Martial Soul react; it becomes the source of his first Soul Ring 23 24.
Mandrake Snake Over 400 years Fights Yu Xiaogang and Tang San; Tang San absorbs its Soul Ring after killing it 19 20.
Sharp-Eyed Eagle Around 600 years Provides Chu Heng’s second Soul Ring 40.

Soul Rings

  • Killing a Soul Beast produces a Soul Ring above its corpse. Chu Heng is told he must kill the beast himself to absorb its ring 24.
  • Suitability matters as well as age: Chu Heng’s Martial Soul responds to the Energy-Type Falcon and later the Sharp-Eyed Eagle, while more than a dozen other beasts prompt no clear reaction 23 40.
  • Absorbing the falcon’s ring lets Chu Heng break past level ten and become a Soul Master. His separate Soul Ring Blessing raises the absorbed ring’s age to three hundred years 24.
  • The Mandrake Snake’s ring is close to the proposed maximum age for a first ring, but Yu Xiaogang considers it an excellent match for Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass 20.

Habitat and Encounters

  • Soul Hunting Forest — A woodland divided into zones by danger. A Special Hunting Writ permits access beyond the outermost zone, where Soul Beasts are more numerous and varied 14.
  • Wildlife hazards — Other Soul Beasts gather near Chu Heng’s fight with the Wind-Chasing Leopard, apparently waiting to exploit its outcome 15.
  • Food sourceChu Heng hunts Soul Beasts during his forest training. Their flesh sustains him, and wild beasts’ flesh is described as more nourishing than that of low-level captive beasts 16 17.
  • Beast Tide — An outbreak in the forest’s inner reaches draws Su Xianling away from Chu Heng to help suppress it 17 21.
  • Human form — Xiao Wu is a Soul Beast who has taken human form. Chu Heng knows her identity but does not reveal it to Tang San 35.
