Background and History

Ji Changkong had lived for three thousand years and was one of the Canglan Realm’s three great human Holy Masters. He had once swept across eight thousand li of the Demon Domain with a single sword and overawed its abyss demons for three hundred years. By the opening of the story, however, he was dying, convinced that his failure to reach the Emperor Realm meant the Heavenly Dao had denied him a path to immortality 1 2.

A vision of the fallen Heavenly Court changed his understanding of that failure. Ji concluded that the immortal path had been severed and the world’s laws left incomplete. His renewed conviction gave him another hundred years to live. He ordered the witnesses to keep the vision secret, then led the investigation of a white-jade fragment found in Sorrowwind Valley, identifying it as part of the Southern Heavenly Gate 1 2 3.

When Library Pavilion attendant Su Chen pronounced the fragment’s inscription, Ji came to believe that he might be an ancient being or a guide connected to the Heavenly Court. Ji promoted him to Special Guest Elder, protected his seclusion, and ordered a wider search for ancient relics. He later interpreted Lin Qiye’s recovery and divine inheritance as another sign of the Heavenly Court’s return, restoring Lin to the rank of First Holy Son 4 5 8.

Ji received one of seven Dao-Hearing Edicts and attended Hongjun’s first lecture at Zixiao Palace. Its teaching enabled his breakthrough to half-step Human Immortal. After a second lecture on paths beyond the Calamity Cycle, he renamed the Primeval Holy Land the Primordial Xuanmen and became its first sect leader 16 17 19 24 26.

Appearance

Ji’s appearance changes markedly after his breakthrough:

• Near death: Skeletally thin, with bark-like skin, dull silver hair, sunken eyes, and a purple-gold eight-trigrams Dao robe hanging loosely from his frame 1.
• After gaining a hundred years: Still stooped, but visibly more vital and able to stand with the bearing of a powerful cultivator 2.
• After the Zixiao lecture: His face grew younger, his silver hair turned black, and his depleted blood qi surged again 19.

Personality

Ji’s pursuit of immortality initially made his thousand-year bottleneck a source of deep self-doubt. Once he found an explanation he believed, he became resolute and protective: he guarded the Heavenly Court relic, committed the Holy Land’s resources to Lin Qiye, and prepared its defenses when outside forces sought Lin’s inheritance 2 3 8 10.

He is also quick to fit new events into his understanding of the ancient Heavenly Court. His certainty about Su Chen’s supposed identity led him to grant Su exceptional authority and protection, though Su Chen was secretly orchestrating the signs Ji interpreted 4 5 8.
