Power Progression

Background / History

Chu Men dies after working overtime in his previous life and awakens bound in Joker’s cell at Arkham Asylum. Once the system activates, he kills Joker, massacres the inmates on Arkham’s second basement level, and escapes past Commissioner Gordon’s police cordon 1 2.

Calling himself Homelander, he takes over the Iceberg Lounge by forcing Penguin to submit. He then claims Penguin’s operations and expands his control through fear, killing rival crime bosses and requiring Gotham’s gangs to surrender their profits and assets 2 3 6 22 23. His reckoning with Gotham’s established bosses includes capturing Black Mask and Two-Face and burning them to death alongside Penguin. He demands 99 percent of the surviving gangs’ business profits and appoints Lark to administer their operations 22.

Penguin’s efforts to draw Superman to Gotham lead to a dockside battle. Chu Men initially exploits Superman’s concern for bystanders; when Superman overpowers him, the Silver Age physique fragment reverses the fight. Chu Men attacks a passenger ferry to force Superman to shield its civilians, then defeats him before a worldwide audience 9 16 17 18 19 20.

After rejecting Lex Luthor’s proposed alliance, Chu Men destroys the LexCorp force sent to recover him. He spares Luthor only to use Spiritual Imprint on him, leaving LexCorp’s resources under the direction of a devoted servant 31 33 34 35. Luthor subsequently promotes worship of Chu Men and uses LexCorp’s forces, media, and resources to advance his rule 36 76 78.

Chu Men also uses Spiritual Imprint to enslave Harley Quinn and Selina Kyle. Harley’s failed attack ends with the destruction of her obsession with Joker and its replacement by devotion to Chu Men. Selina attempts to escape her restraints and stab him, but after her blade shatters, he breaks her will and imprints her as well 41 51.

During Apokolips’s invasion of Gotham, Chu Men destroys Parademons and assault ships, shatters Steppenwolf’s Battle Axe, and kills Steppenwolf. He suppresses the clashing energies of the three Mother Boxes before crushing their cores. Afterward, he confronts the wounded Justice League rather than allowing it to withdraw unchallenged 60 61 62 63. Superman returns with power drawn from the sun’s core, but Chu Men withstands his attacks. When a coordinated League assault gives Superman the chance to cut his cheek, the resistance triggers the increase of Chu Men’s Silver Age physique fragment to 50%. Chu Men defeats Superman again and intercepts Barry’s attempt to change the past, then lets the surviving heroes escape 67 68 69 70 72.

Chu Men has the ruined Iceberg Lounge replaced with a tower he names the One God Temple. He rejects an attempt by East Coast criminals to bargain for authority, killing Clayface and Mr. Freeze; Pamela Isley submits instead. After seven empowered rebels infiltrate the temple, he kills them and turns the last assassin’s blood into a carpet, which Luthor broadcasts as a warning 74 76 77 78.

At Carado, Chu Men confronts Superman while refugees are threatened by suspended nuclear warheads. He mocks Superman when some refugees turn against their protector, then strikes him hard enough for the resulting shock wave to kill hundreds nearby. His heat vision penetrates Superman’s armor and chest, but Superman escapes. Chu Men departs, and Luthor withdraws the Biochemical Army; the warheads fall harmlessly because they are empty 87 88.

When the Justice League returns, Chu Men reveals that he has been observing its preparations and that Arthur now stands at his side. He allows the heroes to complete Doctor Fate’s causality array, then shatters it with a blow after it nearly banishes him 79 100 101 102 103. His manipulation of their preparations includes ordering Luthor to remove the defenses around the deep-sea trench containing the First Trident, allowing the heroes to retrieve it for his amusement 92. The League’s subsequent combined assault leaves only shallow wounds. J’onn J’onzz’s psychic attack nevertheless shakes Chu Men’s composure, while a later strike with Diana’s broken Magic-Breaker blade cuts his neck before he defeats her 105 106 107.

Following the League’s defeat, Chu Men publicly reveals that Clark, Diana, Barry, Victor, Arthur, and Kent Nelson have been enslaved and assigns them to serve the temple. He deliberately leaves Bruce free, wanting him to witness his former allies conquering territory and killing the people they once protected. After challenging Bruce to gather another group of opponents, Chu Men carries him high above Gotham and drops him, intending him to survive and continue resisting 113 114.

A Green Lantern force led by Tomar-Re attacks the temple. Chu Men’s corrupted heroes fight the attackers, and Chu Men breaks the Emerald Cage used to contain them. He subjugates Tomar-Re and the remaining Lanterns, then corrupts Hal and forces him to transmit a dark-red signal through his ring. The signal reaches an approaching Parademon fleet and draws Darkseid’s attention 123.

Darkseid sends DeSaad to demand the Mother Boxes, Superman, and Chu Men’s surrender. Chu Men attacks through the quantum communication channel, mortally wounding DeSaad aboard the flagship. After Darkseid marks Earth for destruction, Chu Men orders a global broadcast and commands the leaders of 197 countries and territories to prepare banquets in their capitals to watch the coming spectacle 128.

Chu Men’s confrontation with Darkseid escalates into a battle that destroys the One God Temple and tears the Gotham peninsula away from North America. Both combatants sustain injuries, and their continuing exchanges accelerate Gotham’s descent into magma and seawater 135. Darkseid’s Omega Beams penetrate Chu Men’s field and inflict severe damage, but the lethal pressure activates further system upgrades. Attacks on his body and conceptual existence push his physique toward full completion, after which he can physically seize the Omega Beams 136 137 139 140.

After overcoming Darkseid’s avatar, Chu Men envelops Earth in a platinum field to halt its surface upheaval, enters the collapsing core, and forces its runaway energy back into a stable state. He restores the core’s convection and Earth’s geomagnetic field 145. He subsequently confronts Darkseid’s higher-dimensional main body, rejects its proposed arrangement, and forces a mental brand into the defeated avatar despite the main body’s threats 148.

Learning that Bruce has survived, Chu Men confronts him at the Old Harbor. He admits that he allowed the catastrophe to unfold as a performance and explains that Bruce’s interference with his control over Arthur improved the spectacle. He again spares Bruce, allowing Alfred to take him away and encouraging him to seek further methods and supernatural allies 150 151. By the time he negotiates with Lucifer, Chu Men states that he has raised Gotham from the sea and welded it back together 162.

When Constantine appears at his court, Chu Men sees through his outward appearance to the demonic blood within him. He breaks the infernal contractual chains binding Constantine, then enters conflicts with Hell’s powers 153 154. In the Desire Rift, he defeats Asmodena, withstands her Elysian Veil, and crushes the Lucifer-marked heart she uses as a causal locator bomb. Diana destroys the accompanying succubus army at his command 156.

Chu Men resists Beelzebub’s poison, compresses his conceptual Gluttony Black Hole into a massive lead ball, and uses it to destroy Beelzebub’s upper body. He also breaks the First of the Fallen’s binding laws and tears apart the Multiversal Contract Codex before confronting Lucifer 159 160. Lucifer proposes using Chu Men’s power, which lies outside the universe’s established rules, to breach Heaven’s defenses. Chu Men accepts the expedition while rejecting the language of equal cooperation, insisting instead on the relationship of boss and hired help 162.

At the boundary of Heaven, Chu Men tears open the Creation Covenant fissure with his completed physique and fundamental-force manipulation. Leading a demon army into the First Heaven, he walks unharmed through Purifying Fire Purgatory, turns the Dominions’ judgment spears against them, and tears a pair of wings from Uriel 166 167. The Primordial Law Aegis then stops his all-out punch and pushes him back half a step, marking the first such obstruction since his complete transformation 168. He responds by manifesting idealism beyond the four fundamental forces. During his subsequent clash with Michael, he renders the Sword of Creation soft like a pink plastic straw, twists it into a bow, and closes in to seize Michael by the hair 169 171.

Appearance

Chu Men has black hair and a muscular build after receiving his powers. He is described with pale skin during his fight with Superman 1 7 18.

• After escaping Arkham, blood slicks his hair back and stains his body 1 2.

Personality

Chu Men associates power with freedom from the poverty, humiliation, and obedience of his former life. He rejects legal and moral limits, openly arguing that power itself determines the rules 3 17 19.

He enjoys provoking opponents who might challenge him. He lets Batman escape because an immediate kill would be boring, urges Superman to fight without restraint, and grows disappointed when Gotham’s gangs submit without rebelling 11 17 26. His rule is also deliberately cruel: he uses public killings and humiliation to secure obedience, and treats the heroes’ fear of him as entertainment 20 22 50.

He continues to prolong confrontations rather than finish defeated opponents, allowing the Justice League to escape after crushing its attempt to stop him. Superman’s success in drawing his blood excites him because it offers genuine resistance, even though it also triggers another increase in his power 69 72. He lets Doctor Fate’s array reach near-completion to see what it can do, then dismisses its reliance on rules after breaking it 101 102 103.

His treatment of Bruce makes this preference explicit: he considers an independent, intelligent opponent more entertaining than an enslaved servant whose resistance would merely reflect his own subconscious orders. He therefore preserves Bruce’s freedom and repeatedly encourages him to find new allies and countermeasures 114 151. He similarly admits that he allowed Darkseid’s threat to the planet to develop as a spectacle, dismissing the lives at stake as subject to his personal wishes 150.

Darkseid’s ability to meet him in physical combat produces intense excitement rather than immediate fear. Once serious injury begins triggering further upgrades, Chu Men recognizes lethal resistance as a means of increasing his power 135 137. Attempts to impose obedience evoke a more personal fury: the Anti-Life Equation brings back his memories of exploitation as an office worker, and he fiercely rejects being forced back into subservience 139.

He compares higher-dimensional authority and divine bargains to the empty promises and coercion of his former employers. He rejects Darkseid’s offer to let him rule his universe as a granted privilege, regarding its space and matter as already his, and reacts with similar hostility to Heaven’s claim to enforce the Creator’s rules 148 168. Against Michael, he treats the Sword of Creation as a pink plastic straw. The sacred weapon becomes soft enough for him to twist its thousand-meter length into a bow with his bare hands, despite its original cutting power 171.

System Space and equipment

Chu Men can retrieve items from System Space. During his exchange with Lucifer, he takes out a Green Lantern Power Ring corrupted by dark-red brands, crushes it, and gathers the resulting dark-red energy into a two-meter warblade bearing Divine Temple Sawtooth Runes 162.
