Background / History

Bruce protects Gotham as Batman. He and Clark Kent previously agreed to stay out of each other’s territory after an unpleasant encounter; Clark upheld that agreement until Chu Men’s killings and Superman-like powers drew him to Gotham 8.

His parents were murdered in Crime Alley when he was eight. Alfred later recalls that Bruce continued protecting Gotham despite that loss, recovered after Bane broke his spine, and rebuilt Wayne Manor after it burned down three times 116 119.

Bruce investigates the Arkham massacre and initially considers Superman a suspect because witnesses describe red beams from the killer’s eyes. After observing Chu Men withstand police gunfire and crush armored vehicles, he concludes that Gotham’s conventional forces cannot stop him 4 7.

After Chu Men defeats the League in Gotham, Bruce and the survivors escape through a portal opened by Victor Stone. They regroup at a concealed Wayne Enterprises mine and continue organizing resistance to Chu Men’s expanding rule 72 79.

The subsequent assault on the Divine Temple ends with Bruce witnessing the subjugation of his surviving teammates. Chu Men deliberately leaves him free, carries him ten thousand meters into the sky and drops him. His armor slows his descent enough for him to survive a crash in a Pennsylvania wheat field, where Alfred finds and rescues him forty minutes later 113 114 115.

Bruce resumes resistance from a Pennsylvania basement. After Hal Jordan’s reinforcements also fall, he attempts to exploit Darkseid’s invasion, but his intervention fails to defeat Chu Men. He later combines advanced computing with magical remnants to search for a winning strategy, only for the simulations and Chu Men’s personal interference to deepen his despair 119 126 130 143 150 165.

Appearance

Bruce wears black armor, a pointed-eared cowl and a bat-shaped cape as Batman 2 10.

• His cowl has white-lit lenses, and his armor carries built-in instruments and weapons 10.
• Outside the armor, he is shown with a sharp jaw and a grim expression 49.
• During the failed Divine Temple assault, half his tactical mask is shattered, exposing a bruised and bloodied left cheek. His cape is torn, and his chest and abdominal armor bear claw marks and bullet craters 109.

Personality

Bruce is methodical and unwilling to abandon Gotham even when his preparations fail. Badly injured after his first fight with Chu Men, he refuses outside medical help and returns to analyzing the encounter instead of resting 12. He is blunt with Clark about how concern for bystanders affected their fight, but risks himself to rescue him 21 27.

Bruce accepts severe personal risk when he sees a tactical chance, drawing Apokolips’s forces toward Chu Men in a damaged Batwing despite being told his chance of survival is below ten percent 55 56. His caution also makes him secretive with allies: suspecting that the Atlantis mission went too smoothly, he withholds several contingencies from the League 91. Even after Chu Men exposes their final plan, Bruce continues assessing possible weaknesses 100 107.

He places great importance on controlling variables and maintaining contingencies. The League’s defeats also provoke intense self-blame: after the first Gotham battle, he holds himself responsible for bringing Steppenwolf to Chu Men and exposing the tyrant’s power to the world 73 92 115. His psychological confrontation with Chu Men shows a willingness to attack an opponent’s motives directly when physical and tactical options have failed 109.

Watching his comrades kneel breaks his usual composure. After Alfred rescues him, Bruce admits that he has no Plan B and later weeps in the car—something Alfred has never previously seen him do.
