Background / History

When Themyscira’s Oracle Stone showed Chu Men brutalizing Superman, Diana resolved to confront him. She entrusted the island’s defenses to Artemis, took the sword Magic-Breaker, and left without saying goodbye to her mother, Queen Hippolyta 25.

In Gotham, Diana gathered information before acting. She stopped Falcone enforcers from assaulting a shopkeeper, but her divine perception found no trace of Chu Men at the Iceberg Lounge 26 30. After witnessing him destroy LexCorp’s forces, she abandoned her plan to attack alone and returned to Bruce Wayne to help assemble allies 34 37.

A warning through her Lasso of Truth called Diana back to Themyscira before she could reach Barry Allen 42. There, an awakened Mother Box resisted Magic-Breaker and opened a rift for Steppenwolf. Diana used the Aegis to seal the rift, then warned Bruce that the Mother Box was broadcasting Earth’s location to Apokolips 45 46. She subsequently brought Victor Stone to the Batcave and argued against attacking Chu Men before preparing for the invasion 48 49.

When Steppenwolf attacked Themyscira, Diana returned through a portal opened by Victor. Her Aegis strike killed nearby Parademons, but Steppenwolf broke both her forearms, disabled the shield, and seized the island’s Mother Box. Victor brought her back to the Batcave for emergency treatment. Still injured, she fought Steppenwolf again at S.T.A.R. Labs and tried to stop him from pursuing Bruce, but he incapacitated her 52 53 55.

Diana survived the League’s subsequent confrontation with Chu Men and later stopped Bruce from striking the floor in grief over the team’s losses. During a mission to recover Atlantis’s Life-Reconstruction Engine for Barry, she challenged Arthur’s killing of his former guards, protected Victor from bio-androids despite severe acid burns, and carried the incapacitated Bruce through a deep-sea escape route. She helped restrain Barry while the engine reconstructed his legs 64 73 81 82 83.

During the League’s renewed attack alongside Clark, Diana used one of Bruce’s Patches to recover enough to fight. After Barry opened a breach in Chu Men’s Bio-electric Field, she committed her remaining divine power to a broken Apokolips spear and hurled it as part of a coordinated assault with Victor and Clark 68 69.

After Barry found Chu Men’s presence blocking his attempt to travel through time, Diana wanted to fight rather than continue hiding, while Bruce ordered a retreat. She later supported a mission to retrieve Atlantis’s First Trident, believing its power could strengthen the League’s planned formation. Before the final assault, she gave Barry a blue stone entrusted to her by Artemis, following a Themyscian custom of passing treasured possessions to someone who might survive a battle 84 92 95.

Diana channeled Olympian divine power through Magic-Breaker into Doctor Fate’s causality array during the assault on Chu Men. When Chu Men shattered the array, the sword snapped and its broken tip wounded her shoulder. Diana later used a fragment to breach his Bio-electric Field and cut his neck, drawing blood; the wound took several seconds to heal, but the remaining fragments disintegrated under the force of his response. Though gravely injured, she climbed from the rubble and continued attacking his field until she collapsed to one knee 102 103 106 107.

Between the array’s destruction and her strike at Chu Men’s neck, Diana joined Clark’s attack following Billy Batson’s death. She bound Magic-Breaker shards to the back of her hand with the Lasso of Truth, forming an improvised punching dagger. Attacking where Clark’s Heat Vision struck, she opened a three-centimeter gash in Chu Men’s Force Field and called for Barry 104.

After her final unarmed assault failed, Diana continued refusing to submit. Chu Men shattered her jaw and knocked her through the Divine Temple’s outer wall, sending her falling three hundred meters into a Gotham street. He later retrieved her with his Force Field and arranged her alongside the other defeated heroes. Even then, she tried to push herself upright and repeated that she would rather die than kneel 108 110 111.

Chu Men then subjected Diana to the Spiritual Imprint, invading and destroying memories of Themyscira, her family, and her allies. She resisted for twelve seconds, longer than Barry or Victor, but her resistance ended on the thirteenth. Her eyes became dark red, and she knelt, called Chu Men “Master,” and awaited his orders. Chu Men subsequently announced that she would sleep beside his bed 112 114.

Under the imprint, Diana became an enforcer of Chu Men’s rule. She disciplined Divine Temple soldiers with the Lasso of Truth and threatened those who failed a weighted cross-country run with being fed to Bio-Tyrants. When Green Lanterns attacked the temple, she fought alongside the other enslaved heroes and attacked Hal despite his appeals to their former identities as Earth’s guardians. The Lanterns temporarily trapped her, Clark, Arthur, and Barry in an Emerald Cage before Chu Men broke it 121 123.

During Apokolips’s later invasion, Diana rallied the Divine Temple’s guards in Metropolis Square and killed Parademons with her lasso. Back at the temple, she restrained Kalibak with the Lasso of Truth, but the Furious Female Furies’ neural electric spears bypassed her divine defenses and incapacitated her beside Clark. Chu Men killed the attackers while both remained wounded 130 131 132.

While Diana and Clark received treatment in nutrient solution, Darkseid’s Anti-Life Equation began stripping away and rewriting their souls, interfering with Chu Men’s imprints. The competing effects left Diana motionless in suspended animation amid the temple’s ruins. This did not lead to a lasting release: she was later again serving beside Chu Men’s throne, offering him drinks while still enslaved 138 142 152.

Diana subsequently accompanied Chu Men beyond Earth’s mortal realm. In Hell, he ordered her and Clark to mine the Desire Rift and send its surviving demons to work for Luthor. She later followed Chu Men, Clark, and Constantine up Jacob’s Ladder behind Lucifer’s army, reaching Heaven’s Southern Heavenly Gate, where Uriel and a hundred thousand Dominions awaited them 157 166.

Personality

Diana is willing to confront threats directly, but does not mistake courage for a workable plan. She initially believes Superman’s restraint caused his defeat and vows not to hold back herself. After seeing Chu Men’s strength, she accepts that attacking him alone would be futile 25 30 34.

Her duty to Themyscira can override her immediate mission: she turns back from recruiting Barry when the island’s ancient seal is threatened. In the Batcave, she challenges Bruce’s plan to fight Chu Men first, citing both the approaching invasion and the limits of her own weapon 42 49.

Diana remains protective of her allies despite repeated defeats. She carries Bruce when he cannot escape the deep sea unaided, comforts Barry before the final assault, and urges the injured Clark to rest. Bruce’s continued secrecy troubles her, while his decision to retreat after Barry’s warning about the River of Time frustrates her 82 84 91 93 95.

Her refusal to surrender persists even when she can no longer breach Chu Men’s defenses. After losing Magic-Breaker and suffering grave injuries, she continues striking his Force Field despite the recoil worsening her wounds 106 107.

Diana’s loyalty to her allies extends beyond Themyscira’s customary distance from human affairs. Bruce remembers her declaring that the Amazons never abandon their allies and promising that they would fight side by side against monsters or gods 115.

Her defiance continues after her final physical defeat: she spits at Chu Men and repeatedly declares that she would rather die than kneel. Bruce regards her as the most resolute warrior he has ever known, but even her will is ultimately overcome by the Spiritual Imprint 108 111 112.

Under the imprint, Diana’s behavior changes to emotionless obedience rather than a voluntary change of allegiance. She disregards Hal’s appeals, enforces Chu Men’s ownership of his soldiers’ lives, and kills invading Parademons solely on her master’s orders.
