Background and History

Harleen Quinzel was a criminal psychologist before becoming the Joker’s devoted follower. By the time Link encountered her in Arkham Asylum, other inmates were attacking her over a Joker doll, and she still believed the Joker would rescue her. Link sought her out for her knowledge of Arkham, Gotham’s underworld, and its criminals 3 6.

During a riot, Link freed Harley from an observation ward and offered her a choice between escaping with him and remaining in Arkham. She discarded the doll and left with him. In Gotham, she challenged his motives before accepting a partnership on the condition that she could leave whenever she wanted. Her information helped them target Penguin’s weapons and recruit their first followers 9 12 13 17.

Harley initially became president of Chaos Direction, but found its meetings and reports stifling. Link instead placed her in charge of an independent department responsible for internal discipline, operations against rivals, and intelligence gathering. Their partnership became romantic, though Harley worried that his growing power might eventually leave her behind 38 78.

As Link’s ambitions expanded beyond Gotham, Harley led fighters and fleets in battles on Earth and in space. Later, the peace Link imposed across the universe left her restless. Her decision to suspend emotional suppression in part of Gotham exposed a weakness Batman could exploit. She subsequently regretted her role in the crisis that followed 226 261 302 330 336 346.

Harley suffered a fatal wound while protecting Link and, in her fading consciousness, urged him to reclaim the free, messy world they had once loved. After the universe was restored, a mysterious light repaired her wound and returned her to life, though she awoke confused and with an apparent gap in her memories. She returned to Gotham and opened a counseling center. Years later, a private phrase from their past led her to recognize the returned Link, and they reunited 352 361 362 372 375.
