His transformed appearance includes horizontal pupils, dark red markings around his eyes, a widened jaw, a more prominent nose, and sharpened canine teeth. Fukasaku and Shima perch on his shoulders during the transformation 51 65 82.
• Wartime clothing — During the fighting at Kikyō Mountain, he wears a red outer robe that has been torn in several places 77.

Personality

Jiraiya is impulsive and openly attracted to Tsunade. He plans to confess to her more than once, but jealousy leads him to follow her and Orochimaru into a laboratory, where he mistakes a voluntary experiment for an attack on her 6 27 28. His habit of peeping at the women’s bathhouse repeatedly brings him into conflict with Tsunade 5 6 8.

Despite his comic behavior, he takes the training class seriously once he sees its students, warns Tsunade about the danger of teaching children Flying Thunder God, and resists Orochimaru’s attempt to steer his choice of forbidden technique 44 45 49.

His apparent retreat during the duel with Orochimaru conceals a deliberate effort to buy time for Sage Mode, demonstrating patience and tactical deception beneath his impulsive demeanor. Even after winning and collapsing from exhaustion, he still seeks Tsunade’s admiration 50 51.

In war, Jiraiya sets aside his usual levity, responds promptly to Tsunade’s commands, and continues fighting despite exhaustion. His concern for her is expressed through checking her injuries, bringing her water, and accepting her decisions even when he worries about her condition 60 64 66 78 80 81 83. Senjutsu and summoning

Jiraiya has learned Senjutsu. During a duel with Orochimaru, he buys time to summon two cloaked toads onto his shoulders, beginning his Sage transformation 6 50. He subsequently completes Sage Mode and defeats Orochimaru’s Eight Branches form 51.

• Summons a combat-ready toad through a summoning contract 45.
• Fukasaku and Shima — Elder toads who assist his Sage Mode and fight alongside him. Fukasaku uses Water Release: Water Gun to disrupt the Third Mizukage’s corrosive water, creating an opening for Jiraiya’s assault 51 65 82.
• Gamabunta — A giant toad summon who fights with a huge short sword. Jiraiya battles Chiyo’s puppets from atop Gamabunta and withdraws with him when Tsunade creates an opportunity to prepare Sage Mode 77 78.
• Sage Mode enhancements — Natural Energy changes the quality of his chakra and greatly enhances his speed, perception, physical strikes, and ninjutsu. His Senjutsu-enhanced attacks overcome Orochimaru’s regeneration and cannot be fully reproduced by Yagura’s Water Mirror Technique 51 65 84 87.

• In his duel with Orochimaru, Dragon Flame Song burns two heads of the eight-headed serpent, but both regenerate 50.
• Sage Art: Fire Release: Dragon Flame Song — The Senjutsu-enhanced version produces enormous white-hot fire dragons. It destroys Orochimaru’s serpent form faster than it can regenerate and forces him out of the transformation. • Bathhouse incident — Tsunade finds Jiraiya peeping through the women’s bathhouse wall and punches him when the wall collapses. His injuries require her Medical Ninjutsu, and she warns him not to peep there again 5 6 8.
• Hashirama reagent experiment — Carrying flowers for Tsunade, Jiraiya instead sees her leave with Orochimaru and follows them. He bursts into Orochimaru’s laboratory to protect her, disrupting an experiment she had agreed to undergo. Tsunade later beats him for the interference 27 28 29. He returns to the hospital with four broken ribs, a shattered left arm, and a ruptured spleen 30.
• Training class and Book of Seals — Tsunade persuades him to become an assistant instructor.
