Background and History

Ma Hongjun joins Yuan Yu, Dai Mubai, Oscar, and the other students as part of Shrek’s Eight Monsters 18 23. Early on, his Evil Fire Phoenix is both a powerful martial soul and a danger he struggles to control. When its flames surge during an encounter with Cuihua, Yuan Yu contains the fire. Ma Hongjun apologizes to her, accepts her request that he stop visiting, and promises to seek help rather than use women as an outlet for future flare-ups 26.

Tang San later gives him the Cockscomb Phoenix Sunflower. Its absorption is difficult, but Tang San guides the medicinal power while Yuan Yu contains the escaping flames. Afterward, Ma Hongjun’s fire is hotter, purer, and carries far less of its former chaotic energy 68 69.

His fighting grows more controlled through Shrek’s arena matches and tournament training. He learns to sweep poison mist aside without scattering it over his own team 43 46. Against Plant Academy, he wins five consecutive bouts by changing tactics for each opponent rather than relying on greater firepower 139.

After Shrek’s championship, the group separates for five years of training and later reunites 170 179. Ma Hongjun subsequently travels with the others to Sea God Island, where he receives Black-Level Six Trials and continues training under the pressure of the Sea God’s Light 204 209.

His bravado does not prevent him from taking criticism: after Cuihua’s encounter, he acknowledges the harm caused by his Evil Fire, and on Sea God Island he practices a new charging skill after his teammates point out its weaknesses 26 209.

In combat, he becomes more patient and inventive. His Plant Academy run shows him exploiting roots, seeds, airflow, and an opponent’s expectations while fighting through exhaustion 139.
