Background and history

Deadwater Valley Boarfolk migrated to the valley more than a thousand years ago. Their clan controls the surrounding area and numbers over five thousand, including priests and geomancers described as being as strong as Intermediate Professionals 12 30.

During an internal conflict, the clan’s High Priest reportedly died and Chieftain Ramsta took power. Supporters of the High Priest were purged or driven out; a Boarfolk Warrior encountered near Mill Town was believed to belong to that faction. Investigators also confirmed that an unidentified source was supplying the clan with improved weapons and armor made in human workshops 22 30.

Appearance

Boarfolk have pig-like heads on heavily muscled, humanoid bodies. Ordinary individuals stand around six feet tall; their bulk, thick hide, and mud-caked hair make them appear larger and harder to injure 16 17.

  • Curved tusks project from the mouth, and dark-brown bristles run from the forehead toward the lower back 16.
  • The back is slightly hunched, with arms nearly twice as thick as an adult man’s 16.
  • Ordinary Boarfolk encountered near Mill Town carried huge wooden mallets. The larger warrior Shattered Tooth wore armor, carried a spiked metal warhammer, and bore a small banner 17 18 19.

Abilities and traits

Strength and durability

  • Boarfolk blows can stagger shield-bearing fighters, while their dense muscle and hide impede arrows, daggers, and sword thrusts that miss vital areas 16 17.
  • Rain’s ordinary Boarfolk bloodline grants Brute Strength Lv. 1 and Thick Hide Lv. 1, which increase his strength and constitution; Thick Hide also improves poison resistance and defense against piercing attacks 22.
  • The Boarfolk Warrior bloodline raises those talents to level 2 and grants Hammer Proficiency. These are effects recorded on Rain’s status panel, not documented abilities of every Boarfolk 24.

Keen scent

  • Boarfolk have a keen sense of smell that can complicate attempts to approach them unnoticed 16.
  • Rain’s Keen Scent Lv. 2, gained from an ordinary Boarfolk bloodline, lets him distinguish lingering scents within approximately fifty meters 22.

Warrior’s charge

  • A Boarfolk Warrior can lower its head and charge with its tusks. Shattered Tooth avoided an icy trap and struck Chris hard enough to send him flying and break his shield arm 18.
  • Rain’s bloodline converts this tusk attack into the human-usable Savage Charge; it is an adapted ability rather than a charge performed with tusks 24.

Story role

  • Mill Town bounty: A job to kill two Boarfolk southwest of Mill Town drew Rain into a temporary partnership with the Whistling Hunters. Their planned ambush used Rain’s Freezing Ray to turn wet ground into ice 13 16.
  • Unexpected warrior: After fighting ordinary Boarfolk, the party encountered Shattered Tooth, a Boarfolk Warrior omitted from the bounty’s intelligence. Rain ultimately killed him after the team wounded, poisoned, and distracted him 17 18 19 20 21.
  • Clan investigation: Shattered Tooth’s machine-stitched vest and older warhammer wounds prompted an investigation. It uncovered the clan’s internal conflict and improved equipment, a threat reported beyond Mill Town to the Dorn City Council 22 23 30.
