Power Progression

These stages track Naruto’s access to the Nine-Tails’ power, not an increase in the beast’s innate strength.

History

The Nine-Tails was created by the Sage of Six Paths. Minato Namikaze later split him in half, sealing one half inside Naruto and the other inside himself. The Nine-Tails’ earlier rampage nearly destroyed Konoha and left villagers blaming Naruto for the beast’s actions 217 323 2 52.

While sealed in Naruto, the Nine-Tails’ chakra surfaced during emotional outbursts and training. Aogetsu Hyuga repeatedly suppressed him, first with ocular power and later by defeating Naruto’s six-tailed form through brute force. The latter encounter left the Nine-Tails convinced that Aogetsu’s power might approach the Sage of Six Paths’ 25 51 113.

Aogetsu eventually entered Naruto’s sealing space and removed the seal despite Minato and Kushina’s objections. He overpowered the freed Nine-Tails, trapped and wounded him with Black Coffin, and demanded obedience. The Nine-Tails bowed to Naruto and was ordered to teach him to use his power 213 215 216 217.

During the war, the enemy extracted the half sealed in Minato, while Naruto retained his own half. The Nine-Tails warned Naruto about Hashirama, Madara, and the Ten-Tails. When Naruto refused to flee the Ten-Tails’ attack, their disagreement ended with the Nine-Tails lending him all his power 308 323 324 325 326.

Appearance

In his own form, the Nine-Tails is an enormous fox; Naruto’s transformations and chakra manifestations take on aspects of that form.

• Orange-red fur and massive claws — visible during Aogetsu’s confrontation with him in the sealing space 215.
• Pale-golden beast eyes — seen as Aogetsu suppresses his consciousness 51.
• Golden chakra manifestation — Naruto can form a giant Nine-Tails likeness around himself 306 326.

Personality

The Nine-Tails is proud and resents being commanded. He hopes to escape when Aogetsu begins opening Naruto’s seal, attacks once freed, and remains humiliated by being made to call Naruto “lord” 213 215 217.

He is also cautious about threats he believes he cannot defeat. Aogetsu’s attacks break his resistance, while his knowledge of Hashirama, Madara, and the Ten-Tails prompts urgent warnings to Naruto. His reluctance to face the Ten-Tails is partly self-preservation, but he ultimately cooperates after Naruto acknowledges that the danger extends to both of them 216 308 324 325 326.

Chakra Sharing

The Nine-Tails supplies the chakra behind Naruto’s cloaks, transformations, and golden Nine-Tails manifestation 51 112 217 326.

• He can lend Naruto enough power to form a giant golden likeness and produce a Tailed Beast Bomb 306 326.
• He can withhold power when he judges a fight too dangerous; Naruto objects to this during the Ten-Tails’ assault 325.
• Hashirama’s Gate of the Great God suppresses Naruto’s access to his power 309.

Tailed Beast Bomb

The Nine-Tails can gather chakra into a destructive sphere, both in his own form and through Naruto 215 216 326.

• His attack in the sealing space is overpowered by Aogetsu’s vibration-enhanced punch 216.
• With full cooperation, Naruto adds Sage chakra to their Tailed Beast Bomb while Sasuke and Sakura reinforce the attack with their own techniques 326.

Knowledge and Resilience

• The Nine-Tails recognizes dangerous opponents and warns Naruto to flee from Hashirama, Madara, and the Ten-Tails’ Tenpenchii 308 324.
• He explains that Tenpenchii produces natural disasters and tells Naruto that Minato sealed the other half of the Nine-Tails in himself 323 325.
• As a being made of chakra, he survives extensive wounds from Black Coffin. He also tells Naruto that he can return from death, unlike Naruto 216 326.

Relationships

• Naruto Uzumaki — his jinchūriki. Their relationship changes from involuntary power-sharing and arguments into cooperation under threat from the Ten-Tails 51 217 325 326.
• Aogetsu Hyuga / Cangyue — repeatedly suppresses and defeats him, then forces him to help Naruto master his power 51 113 216 217.
• Minato Namikaze — split the Nine-Tails and sealed a half inside himself and a half inside Naruto 323.
• Kushina Uzumaki — the Nine-Tails recognizes her sealing chains with apprehension 214.
