"When I was on the Tibetan Plateau, plenty of people called me a martial arts prodigy, too." Batman shrugged.
"Uh..." Roland simply gave up on explaining. "It's a secret."
"Oh." Batman nodded. Since his friend couldn't talk about it right now, he would just investigate in secret. "One more thing. That robbery you just committed..."
"Damn! How did you know?" Roland exclaimed in shock. "You were spying on me?"
Batman didn't answer. Instead, he said, "Try not to do that again. They may be a gang, but robbing them is still illegal."
Realization dawned on Roland, and he began patting himself down. When his fingers reached his collar, he felt something hard.
"You planted this?" Roland couldn't help complaining. "With friends like these, who needs enemies?"
Batman didn't answer.
"Forget it. I'm heading out." Roland knew this was just how Batman was. He had contingency plans for everyone in the Justice League except Green Arrow—even himself.
As for why he didn't have one for Green Arrow... that was because the Old Bat could dislocate Green Arrow's arms without even using any gadgets.
Batman said nothing. He simply stood there quietly, his thoughts a mystery.
"What's on your mind?" On the way back, Jason noticed Roland had gone quiet and assumed Batman had hurt his feelings. "Did Batman piss you off?"
"Not really." Roland rubbed his head. "I'm wondering if I can use this opportunity to get Batman to pay me for emotional distress."
"Probably not." Jason shook his head. "I have to say, your mind works in some seriously weird ways."
"Forget it. I'll just stick to making an honest living," Roland said.
"What do you mean, 'stick to'? Since when have we made an honest living?" Jason couldn't help retorting.
"Shh, don't talk nonsense. Everything we do is perfectly legal."
Arkham Asylum.
Batman brought Poison Ivy there, only to find that Arkham Asylum was already in complete chaos.
"What happened?" Batman stopped an orderly to ask.
"Joker and Harley Quinn escaped!" the orderly said in a panic.
"Tch." Batman felt a headache coming on. The biggest thorn in his side in all of Gotham City had escaped from Arkham Asylum again. Just his luck.
"Process Poison Ivy's admission," Batman told the asylum staff.
"Of course." A group of orderlies expertly took charge of Poison Ivy and escorted her into a ward.
Batman sighed, then turned and left.
He needed to find Joker's hideout and capture him as soon as possible, before Joker made headlines.
Funny Bone Airlines.
"Puddin', haven't you decided yet?" Harley Quinn asked Joker, bored out of her mind. "We just got out of Arkham. Can't we spend some time doing something romantic?"
"Shut up. I need to come up with a plan to give Bat-brain a surprise..." Joker scribbled and sketched on a sheet of paper. "That'll do. Tomorrow, we'll start by kidnapping Gordon."
"Okay!"
Commissioner Gordon took a painkiller, then suddenly felt a chill down his spine and an uneasy sensation all over.
Maybe I should see a dentist, Gordon thought. But the thought of seeing a dentist only made him feel worse.
The following afternoon.
"Commissioner Gordon, what happened to you?" Roland arrived at the Gotham City Police Station and found Gordon with puffy eyes shot through with red. Puzzled, he asked, "Were you up all night working a case?"
"Y-yes, that's right," Commissioner Gordon said vaguely.
He could hardly tell Roland he'd spent all night having nightmares about dentists.
"You need to look after yourself," Roland advised. "You'll never run out of cases... especially in a city as blessed with outstanding citizens as Gotham."
"Is that supposed to make me feel better...?" Roland's words reminded Gordon of Gotham City's assorted freaks, leaving him even more depressed. "Come on. I'll take you to see Harvey."
Gordon had arranged to meet Harvey at a café. Soft light filled the room, and the faint aroma of coffee hung in the air, lending the place a soothing, comfortable atmosphere.
"I picked this place out myself. Nice atmosphere, right?" Gordon said.
"...Doesn't really seem like your style," Roland remarked.
"I've been a little on edge lately. I could use a break." Gordon ordered three coffees and some pastries, then sat down at a café table. "This gives me a chance to get some proper rest, too. There's just too much going on."
"From the sound of it, something else happened, didn't it?" Roland asked.
"That's right." Gordon sighed. "We still haven't found Mad Hatter, and now Joker's escaped again."
"That's trouble." Roland was startled, too. Gotham City's Joker was one of the villains who had left the deepest impression on him.
Most of Gotham City's villains had some mental issues, and Joker was clearly the most disturbed of the lot.
"Yeah..." Gordon stirred his coffee with a spoon and glanced toward the café entrance. "Oh, Harvey's here."
Harvey Dent walked into the café. When he saw Roland, his expression immediately turned odd.
"Oh, it's you..."
"I didn't realize you were Harvey Dent..."
They greeted each other awkwardly, like online friends with niche kinks running into each other in person.
"What's going on with you two?" Gordon asked, puzzled. "Do you know each other?"
"We met once..."
"Right. We chatted for a while," Roland said. "Really hit it off."
"Where did you meet?" Gordon asked curiously.
"A pool hall!" "A movie theater!"
"Hmm?" Gordon sensed something was off.
"Ahem. Let's get down to business." Roland cleared his throat and changed the subject.
"Right. You said you wanted some legal advice?"
"Here's the thing. There's an abandoned church, and I'm planning to..." Roland explained his idea again.
"I see..." Harvey considered it. "Have you applied through the church? They know quite a bit about this sort of thing."
Roland shook his head.
"Do you know a reasonable number of believers?"
"Not... many." Roland thought it over. Surely he couldn't proselytize to minors.
Then again, he wasn't a true believer himself, so calling himself one didn't really matter.
"Do you need to hold regular gatherings?"
"That could be arranged."
Harvey frowned. "What about clergy to lead those gatherings?"
"For now, it's just me." Roland's confidence dwindled with every answer.
"Do you have an administrative organization, rules and regulations, and a reliable source of funding?"
"Well, that..."
"Wait, what exactly are you here for?" Harvey asked, baffled.
