Ch. 141Ambush
Chapter Summary: “Ambush”
Key plot points and events
- In the Forbidden Forest, Jerry Green forces a group of Acromantulas to produce venom, collecting it in an enchanted bag. He kills ten spiders with Fiendfyre and brutally punishes one that appears resentful.
- As Jerry leaves, the forest suddenly falls silent. Someone attacks him from behind with Confringo, blasting up dust.
- Three men emerge: Flory, a scarred and hardened-looking man, and two young members of the Apostles, identifiable by their embroidered black coats and red insignia. They intend to take Jerry alive for their leader, the Bishop.
- The young Apostles mock Flory and dismiss Jerry as an easy target. Jerry responds by firing Avada Kedavra at one of them. The spell’s destructive effect is far more extreme than they expect, reducing the attacker to nothing.
Character developments
- Jerry is shown as ruthless, resourceful, and commercially minded: he exploits the spiders for valuable venom and treats their suffering casually. When ambushed, he is immediately aggressive and reveals frightening magical power.
- Flory remains outwardly impassive despite being insulted. His cold gaze suggests he expects the two Apostles to die, hinting at a hidden plan or confidence in the situation.
- The two young Apostles are arrogant and underestimate both Jerry and Flory. Their certainty collapses when Jerry retaliates.
Significant themes
- Cruelty and power: Jerry’s treatment of the Acromantulas establishes how readily he uses violence to dominate weaker creatures.
- Underestimation and reversal: The Apostles assume Jerry is helpless after the blast, but his counterattack instantly overturns their confidence.
- Instrumental use of magic: Magic is employed for profit, intimidation, and lethal violence rather than merely as a tool of study or defense.
Character interactions
- Jerry dominates the Acromantulas through threats and violence, forcing them to provide venom while they fearfully comply.
- The young Apostles belittle Flory and treat Jerry as an insignificant captive; Flory silently regards them with hostility.
- Jerry’s sudden Killing Curse interrupts their exchange, turning the ambush into an immediate confrontation.
