Background

According to Old Li’s account, the Water Ghost was once a businessman married to He Ting. He discovered her holding a corpse drained of blood and life; after he fainted, she threw him from Cihang Bridge, where he drowned. His resentment turned him into a ghost intent on killing her 4 15.

He haunted the river beneath the bridge, dragging people underwater and drowning them. Heavy rain also allowed him to pursue people on land 4 6 7. Chen Feng initially fought and killed him, then used a later reload to subdue him temporarily by promising to help him take revenge on He Ting. The Ghost-Catching System rated his resentment and combat strength at three stars 7 8.

After He Ting’s death fulfilled his wish, the Water Ghost became Chen Feng’s permanent subordinate. Chen Feng later strengthened him with spirit-money offerings and additional ghost abilities 15 120 122.

Power Progression

Stage Development
Three stars Initially assessed at three stars, with immense strength in water, short-distance travel through water, and the ability to leave the shore in rain 8. He was still listed as a three-star commandable ghost later in Chen Feng’s travels 76.
Eight stars Six months of spirit-money offerings from the Holy Cow Cult’s followers raised him to eight stars. He could summon wind and rain, allowing Chen Feng to call him onto land without waiting for natural rainfall; further spirit money gave diminishing returns at this rank 120. His recorded abilities included Water Manipulation, Invisibility, Black Mud Bomb, and Poison Mist 122.
Nine stars After the Ghost-Catching System began permitting advancement beyond ten stars, Chen Feng’s roster listed the Water Ghost at nine stars, with Black Mud Bomb, Poison Mist, Water Escape, and Invisibility 166 170.
Potential specter transformation Once Chen Feng obtained Death Divinity, the system displayed a possible conversion into a Water Specter. Its proposed killing rule would strike anyone with more than one-third of their body submerged in water with a death-causality attack; burning it would shut it down for one day. The displayed option does not establish that Chen Feng performed the conversion 383.

Appearance

The Water Ghost is transparent and difficult to make out, especially in rain 4 8.

  • Hands — Large, icy, wet, slippery, and strong enough to crush a throat or twist off a head 5 10.
  • Presence — Accompanied by a sharp drop in temperature; on wet ground, his approach can be traced by footprints appearing without a visible walker 7 10.
  • Corpse oil — Coats his body, causing a baton to slide off but making him highly flammable 7 8.

Abilities & Skills

Water and rain

  • Possesses immense strength in water and can teleport short distances through bodies of water; Chen Feng summons him through a running sink 8 10.
  • Can leave the water when it rains, becoming even harder to see 8.
  • Initially, he could not be summoned on dry land without rain. After reaching eight stars, he could summon wind and rain himself, removing Chen Feng’s need to wait for rainfall 16 19 120.
  • His later recorded skills include Water Manipulation or Water Escape, Invisibility, Black Mud Bomb acquired from Stink Ghost, and Poison Mist acquired from Poison Ghost 122 135 170.

Physical attacks

  • Drags victims underwater and drowns them; on land, he can crush throats and tear off heads 4 5 10.
  • Kills four impostor café attendants and catches and crushes Zhu Xianxian’s true body before it reaches Chen Feng 14.
  • Ambushes He Ting in the final fight and, aided by Chen Feng’s Blessings, strikes and crushes her heart despite her attempt to teleport away 15.
  • Is vulnerable to fire because his corpse-oil coating ignites on contact with flame. Electricity also produces sparks that set the coating alight 8 19.

Resilience and limits

  • Survives gunfire and being rammed by a car, but sustained burning kills him in one cycle 6 7.
  • Continues fighting despite poison, burns, and partial petrification, though Zhu Xianxian’s spider swarm and He Ting’s mass of human skins can overwhelm him 11 12.
  • Chen Feng’s reloads restore him after his defeats 12 19.
  • Nearly kills the three-star Fire Ghost, but its flames ignite his corpse oil and destroy him. The loss does not permanently remove him from Chen Feng’s summonable ghosts 111 120.
  • Dies alongside several of Chen Feng’s allies fighting the Lesser Ghost King, then revives with his stamina restored through the boss room’s barrier 130.

Relationships

  • He Ting — His wife and killer. Revenge against her is his lingering wish; he crushes her heart in their final confrontation 4 15.
  • Chen Feng — Initially an enemy, then his summoner and ally. Chen Feng helps fulfill his wish, making their subordinate bond permanent 7 8 15. He subsequently invests spirit money in the Water Ghost’s growth and gives him additional abilities 120 122.
  • She Qingqing — An opponent in one cycle, when he tears off her head; in a later cycle, he follows Chen Feng’s order to knock her unconscious without killing her 10 14.
  • Professor Sheep — Defeats him with electricity and the resulting corpse-oil fire; a subsequent reload restores the ghost 19.
  • Fire Ghost — A cemetery opponent whose neck he nearly snaps. Fire Ghost’s flames exploit his corpse-oil weakness and destroy him during the fight 111.
  • Shi Yue — While Chen Feng confronts Shi Yue, the Water Ghost uses the rain and his invisibility to steal Shi Yue’s Death Note 172.
