Background / History
Meng Chengcheng joins a P.E.A.C.D. mission at Horror Amusement Park to collect Game Coins and exchange them for a souvenir. Fellow trainee Liu Xiaohu is devoted to her, but she has shown no romantic interest in him. Unknown to her, the Liu Xiaohu who accompanies the team after his collapse is an avatar controlled by Chen Feng 34.
At the park, Chengcheng helps interpret attraction rules and contacts dead visitors for clues. In the air-rifle game, Chen warns her that its owner counts as a monster. The warning may save her life, but hearing it costs her the chance to earn the Game Coin she needs for the mission 36 38 40 42.
During Hide-and-Seek, Chengcheng hides in the cats’ shelter. After the priest, Captain Wu, and Lin He die, Chen rescues her by obtaining a black-cat skin to replace her mouse costume. His promise to get her out of the park makes her feel safe, and she begins to think she has fallen in love with him 45 46.
That night, Chengcheng contacts Liu Xiaohu’s ghost and learns that the original Liu is dead. She concludes—incorrectly—that the man with her is a local monster using his body. She decides to conceal what she knows, accept his protection until they escape, and report him to P.E.A.C.D. Both continue through the bumper-car attraction, each misreading the other’s intentions 46 47 48 49.
Chen uses an exploding visitor car to disable the ghost cars, allowing them to finish Bumper Cars. After the remaining attractions, Chengcheng leaves the park without him and returns to the P.E.A.C.D. base. She seeks out Jiang Die for help with Mr. Rabbit, a threat that followed her out of the park. Chen subsequently reaches the base, and Jiang Die identifies the Visitor Guide’s warning against crying as the clue to defeating the rabbit 50 52 53.
At the base, Chengcheng sees Chen kill Imposters with unexpected ease. She stops India from drawing him away for a late-night meal and later attends the park mission debriefing with him. Chen admits that Liu Xiaohu died but claims to be a psychic who can turn the dead into doubles. Chengcheng keeps her earlier discovery to herself and professes trust. While Chen trains, she practices Spirit Communion daily; after the team’s losses, rumors that she has lost her nerve make her anxious to resume missions and earn a promotion 54 55.
After a load-save reset, Chen returns to the start of the park mission in Liu Xiaohu’s body. In this run he takes command, kills Lin He when Lin attacks Chengcheng, and leads the surviving team through the attractions by force and loopholes. Chengcheng is intimidated by him but recognizes that his help made their survival possible 58.
In a possible future Chen observes, Chengcheng disappears after a mediumship ritual. He later learns that the Hell King intends to possess her during a Deity-Invoking Ritual. After warning her, Chen follows her to the Hell King’s territory, where the spirit enters her body. The Hell King’s subsequent attempt to possess her fails, and Chen’s Ghost-Catching System registers Chengcheng as a nine-star Ghost Immortal under his command 80 115 120 121.
Chen later brings Chengcheng to Metro Station Eight in pursuit of a Ghost King. He tricks her into accepting him as her master by disabling and restoring her abilities. In the ensuing confrontation, the Lesser Ghost King annihilates her alongside A Fei and Black Hand. Later system records again list her among Chen’s commandable ghosts, at ten stars 126 129 170.
Appearance
Chengcheng is described as pretty and lively, with a ponytail 34.
- She carries a backpack containing incense for her mediumship 37.
- After Hide-and-Seek, her eyes are red and swollen from crying over her teammates’ deaths 46.
Personality
Chengcheng is proud and confident in her abilities, but she takes the park’s rules seriously and looks for ways to survive them. She insists on contributing even when Captain Wu orders her to avoid a dangerous game 36 38 40.
The deaths of her teammates leave her terrified and grieving. Once she discovers Liu Xiaohu’s death, she hides her suspicion of Chen and acts affectionate because she believes staying close to him is her best chance of survival 45 46 47.
She is competitive about her standing as an agent: she excelled in the rookie assessments and grows anxious when her absence from missions prompts gossip. Although she initially regards Chen as a threat, she protects him during Bumper Cars and objects when India tries to recruit his attention 49 54 55 88.
Abilities & Skills
Spirit mediumship
Chengcheng is at the Aperture Opening stage, the first stage of mediumship, during the initial park mission 37.
- She can invite a recently deceased spirit into her body to communicate, normally once per day 37 38.
- She uses a dead visitor’s account to identify the balloon monsters’ distracting and overhead ambushes in the air-rifle game 38.
- She later contacts Liu Xiaohu’s lingering ghost and examines his final memories 46 47.
- She has not reached Aperture Binding, the stage at which a medium can summon an Immortal Patron, during the park mission 37.
- Spirit Communion also lets her experience a dead visitor’s final moments from their perspective, which can be deeply distressing 43 44.
- In the later course of events, she advances far enough to attend her family’s Deity-Invoking Ritual. Mediumship runs in families, and practitioners report their advancements to their families 120.
Rule analysis
- She recognizes that the fish-catching rules require players to collect nets, but do not require them to use the nets 36.
- She questions whether Hide-and-Seek’s required mouse costumes make players easier for the cats to find, then realizes a black-cat skin can also serve as a costume 42 46.
- She identifies clues suggesting that players might use the black ghost cars in the bumper-car attraction 48.
- In Hide-and-Seek, she reasons that the cats may search apparently safe hiding places first and hides in the Cattery’s litter box instead 43 44.
- During Bumper Cars, she recognizes that the warning before a visitor car explodes gives players time to escape while the blast can destroy nearby ghost cars 50.
Ghost Immortal abilities
After the Hell King’s failed possession attempt, the Ghost-Catching System registers Chengcheng as a nine-star Ghost Immortal with Spirit Communication, Soul-Hooking Chains, Red Paper Umbrella, Ghost Mist, and Shared Fate. Because the system permits only four skills, one must be discarded; later records list the other four. Her recorded rating subsequently rises to ten stars 121 135 170.
