History

Big Black Fish appeared in the Little Oasis pool near the Red Sun Fruit, despite the oasis being occupied by a Horned Python. Ye Chuqi took the fruit, and the fish pursued her across the wasteland until it could no longer survive away from water. After defeating it, she placed it in a pool fed by diluted Spirit Spring water inside her Portable Space 6 7 261.

The fish offered Ye Chuqi a piece of Spatial Bluestone it had nurtured beside its Beast Core in hopes of securing its place in her space. It later gave her magic-resistant scales and volunteered to fight for her. Its original pool became a larger home supplied with Spirit Spring water, while treasures it had collected remained hidden in the mud 27 50 107.

Appearance

Big Black Fish’s size and appearance have changed substantially as it evolved 71 261 377.

• Early appearance: A slick black body, tiny dark eyes, an exceptionally hard head, and large white teeth 6 7.
• Later appearance: An enormous, streamlined body with a smooth, jade-like sheen. It learned to suppress the slime that Ye Chuqi disliked 139 224.
• Size control: Worked to shrink despite growing stronger; even after considerable effort, it was once larger than a sea ship 261. It later became small enough to enter a narrow Fallen Demon Beast nest 384.
• Unexplained features: A transparent Silk-Gauze Fin behind its head can unfurl around a passenger. After a later evolution, two symmetrical bumps appeared on its head; whether they are developing horns is unknown 303 378.

Personality

Big Black Fish is eager to be useful and deeply attached to Ye Chuqi. It worries about losing the home and opportunities she gave it, and seeks her approval even when she is only teasing. It also wants to nuzzle her like her other companions, but has learned to respect her dislike of its slime 85 138 377.

It can be playful and proud, particularly when showing off its flight or size. It is also cautious about opponents beyond its strength: it readily transports Ye Chuqi into danger but does not pretend it can defeat every enemy waiting there 139 225 269.

Abilities & Skills

Spatial Travel

Spatial Bluestone nurtured beside its Beast Core enabled Big Black Fish to travel through space; its control improved while it lived in Ye Chuqi’s Portable Space 27 49 71.

• Opens an internal space to shelter passengers during teleportation. Its first attempt with Ye Chuqi required San San’s help and severely strained its Beast Core 82 83.
• Uses repeated short-range jumps when a chaotic magnetic field makes a long jump unsafe 216.
• Can locate an approximate destination through a spatial vortex, but could not establish whether Marcus had actually arrived there 138 139.
• Later learned to transport passengers within the membrane behind its gills rather than always placing them in its internal space 448.

Defense and Combat

• Its slime blunts physical attacks, while its scales resist magic and can be added to armor 6 50.
• Its sharp fins cut through beasts that Ye Chuqi’s Greatsword struggled to injure; it later used the fins to hunt underwater and project Wind Blades 85 264 383.
• Can ram, bite, strike with its tail, and draw enemy attacks onto its durable body 222 441.
• Against a nest that produced a replacement whenever a beast died, it adapted by disabling newly emerged beasts without killing them 385.

Aquatic Movement and Passenger Protection

• Adapted quickly to seawater despite initially finding its salinity and pressure uncomfortable 178 179.
• Can carry Ye Chuqi through dangerous waters; its Silk-Gauze Fin shields her from sea pressure while leaving her view largely unobstructed 302 303.
• Carried a ship away from a giant octopus’s thrashing tentacles before returning it to the fight 269.

Limits

• Prolonged travel away from water nearly killed it before its advancement; it later became able to remain out of water for long periods 7 71 338.
• Spiritual Energy leaking from its body attracts sea beasts and Sea Demons. San San warned that failing to control the energy would attract still more creatures 262 272 276.
• A force from Monte City’s black vortex briefly clouded its senses, though its lack of a Beast-Taming contract limited the effect and San San helped it recover 222.

Relationships

• Ye Chuqi — Defeated and saved Big Black Fish, then gave it a home. It protects and transports her without a formal Beast-Taming contract 7 85 222 338.
• San San — Interprets its speech, guides its spatial training, and helps care for its recovery and evolution 50 83.
• Little White — Sought Big Black Fish’s help when Ye Chuqi disappeared. Big Black Fish accommodated the fox’s dislike of its internal space by sheltering it beside its head 418.
• Nora — Quickly befriended the fish and explored the sea with it; Big Black Fish welcomed her attention 192.

Story Role / Major Arcs

• Lost Forest: Spoke to the Ironclad Rhinoceros leader during the Beast Tide crisis, then used a risky new teleportation technique to bring Ye Chuqi away from the search for the Nine-Leaf Green Flower 71 82 83.
• Imperial Capital Academy: Examined the vortex left by Marcus’s disappearance and narrowed its destination to a search area in the far north. Its help earned it a special permit to move around outside 137 138 139.
• Monte City: Disrupted the Beast Tide, helped transport Ye Chuqi’s group, and briefly fell under the vortex’s influence 221 222 224.
• Misty Sea and Sea of Exile: Drew sea beasts toward the ship, aided underwater hunts, protected the vessel during a Sea Demon fight, and carried Ye Chuqi into the Sea of Exile 264 269 303.
• Beast Abyss and Kabu Continent: Transported an investigation team into the Abyss, helped clear Fallen Demon Beasts, and later crossed a weak point to reunite with Ye Chuqi on Kabu Continent 379 418 441.
