History
Rocks D. Zebek founded the crew with powerful recruits already assembled; Jaeger was among its founding members. The World Government and Marines initially encouraged the crew’s rise, expecting rival pirates to weaken it. Instead, Rocks defeated challengers and absorbed their crews, sometimes allowing them to retain a measure of independence 4 26.
A Marine fleet led by the Three Admirals failed to defeat Rocks. After a prolonged war, the Government killed Jaeger, but his death provoked retaliation: the Rocks Pirates destroyed most Marine strongholds in the New World. The war ended with the crew replacing the Marines as the region’s dominant power 24 26.
In Sea Era 1485, Rocks led an assault on God Valley, targeting the Celestial Dragons. The World Government destroyed the island with Uranus; Rocks died after holding enemy fighters back, while much of his crew survived. He had ordered the crew disbanded. Back on Hachinosu, the thirteen captains accepted that none of them could command the others, and members began forming independent crews 203 221 222 223 225.
Organization and Resources
- Coalition: The Rocks Pirates comprised officers’ own forces, numerous affiliated pirate crews, and allies outside piracy. At one point, they controlled more than half the New World, with islands and Underworld factions paying for protection 22 23.
- Divisions: After the capture of Impel Down, the crew established thirteen divisions of at least 3,000 fighters each. Rocks also led a separate Zeroth Division containing officers and escaped prisoners 185 187.
- Leadership: Rocks’s strength held together captains who maintained rivalries and sometimes fought among themselves. Officers could build their own forces, but defection risked pursuit by the rest of the crew 63 195.
- Recruitment: Annual tournaments drew pirates to Hachinosu. A mass trial brought in more than 20,000 survivors amid widespread deaths; the April 1477 tournament drew 30,000 applicants for roughly 500 places 78 165.
- Backing: The Kronos Kingdom supplied weapons and provisions, while Hilton-controlled merchant houses secretly provided early funding. Other kingdoms, giants, and anti–World Government factions also aided or joined the coalition 23 83.
- Flagship: The Godslayer Raven was over 300 meters long and could carry 8,000 people. Its name expressed Rocks’s challenge to the Celestial Dragons 86.
