Background and History

Itachi joined the Anbu and served as a double agent for Konoha and the Uchiha clan. When Konoha’s leaders prepared to destroy the clan, he agreed to carry out the massacre on the condition that Sasuke be spared. He then left the village and joined Akatsuki 145.

He later returns to Konoha with Kisame. Capturing Naruto is his stated objective, but he also intends to see Sasuke and push him to grow stronger. He uses Tsukuyomi on both Kakashi and Sasuke during the visit 50 51.

Years later, Itachi fights Sasuke while gravely ill. He conceals his affection behind threats and deception, then draws Orochimaru out of Sasuke and seals him. As Itachi collapses, Naruto revives him. Naruto subsequently takes the crow carrying Shisui’s eye and uses its Kotoamatsukami to redirect Itachi’s loyalty from Konoha to himself 147 148 151 152 153.

Personality

Itachi usually maintains a calm, unreadable expression, even when questioned or threatened. His cruelty toward Sasuke is largely a performance intended to strengthen Sasuke’s hatred and conceal his own motives 51 59 147 148. His commitment to protecting Konoha persists after Sasuke learns the truth: he prepares to use Kotoamatsukami to make Sasuke defend the village 152.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and genjutsu

• Tsukuyomi — His Mangekyō genjutsu leaves Kakashi unconscious for a week. Sasuke later breaks free of it during their fight, though Naruto believes Itachi held back 108 149.
• Genjutsu defense — His Sharingan breaks Yakumo’s initial illusion, but a layered illusion deceives him into wounding his own shoulder before he escapes with his Mangekyō 110 111.
• Cost — Repeated Mangekyō use drains his chakra and damages his eyesight; Amaterasu severely strains his right eye during the fight against Naruto’s allies 108 111.

Fire Release and Susanoo

• Fire Release and Amaterasu — He uses fireballs in combat and black Amaterasu flames to escape Jiraiya’s trap, overcome Haku’s ice, and counter Sasuke’s fire 52 110 111 150.
• Susanoo — His crimson Susanoo protects him from Sasuke’s Kirin and lets him repel an Ice Dragon. Its Totsuka Blade seals Orochimaru’s Eight-Headed Serpent 112 150 151.

• Clones and weapons — Uses Shadow Clones, Crow Clones, kunai, and precise trick throws; one deflected kunai nearly strikes Yakumo in the throat 110 147 149.

• Totsuka Blade — Susanoo’s sealing sword; Naruto takes it after Itachi defeats Orochimaru 151.
• Yata Mirror — Carried by Susanoo and taken by Naruto alongside the Totsuka Blade 151.
