Background / History

Team 7 and rivalry with Naruto

Sasuke initially resists Naruto’s proposal to train together and help him obtain revenge. After losing their second match, he remains unwilling to accept an arrangement that might look like submission. He eventually trades access to his ninjutsu scrolls for Naruto’s Tree-Walking instruction 11 13.

His early combat ability earns Kakashi’s approval, and he matches Naruto through a hundred close-range exchanges during one sparring session. On Team 7’s escort mission to the Land of Waves, he moves to confront the assassins after Kakashi’s apparent death, only for Naruto to kill them first 19 20.

Chunin Exams

Naruto redirects Rock Lee’s challenge toward Sasuke. Lee’s repeated victories trigger Sasuke’s Two-Tomoe Sharingan, but the improved perception cannot compensate for his slower body. Naruto then defeats him with Flash Step, further undermining his belief that the Sharingan makes him unbeatable 28 29 30.

In the Forest of Death, Orochimaru’s killing intent initially immobilizes Sasuke. Naruto’s rebuke pushes him to fight, but Orochimaru overwhelms him and places the Cursed Seal of Heaven on his neck. Naruto secretly allows the encounter to continue because Sasuke and Orochimaru are useful to his longer-term plans 33.

Sasuke subsequently challenges Naruto while drawing on the seal’s power. During the preliminaries, Kakashi warns that using chakra could cause the seal to flare fatally. Sasuke defeats Yoroi, after which Kakashi takes him away to apply the Evil Sealing Method 35 38.

Defection to Orochimaru

Sasuke’s first renewed confrontation with Itachi ends in a crushing defeat. Itachi stops his Chidori, beats him repeatedly, and forces him to relive the massacre through Tsukuyomi. The trauma produces no further Sharingan advancement, and Sasuke requires treatment in Konoha 51 52.

After losing to Naruto for the eighth time, Sasuke faces pressure from both Kakashi and the Sound Four. Kakashi urges him to reconsider revenge; the Sound Four promise that Orochimaru can give him the strength Konoha cannot. Sasuke chooses to leave, believing that training under another Sannin will let him surpass Naruto and kill Itachi 61 62.

Naruto does not stop him and secretly places a Flying Thunder God mark on his shoulder. During the retrieval mission, Naruto’s Female Avatar rescues Sasuke from his pursuers as part of a deal with Orochimaru. His defection succeeds, although Tsunade initially refrains from formally declaring him a rogue ninja 62 70.

Orochimaru’s defeat and Team Snake

Sasuke trains under Orochimaru over the following three years, with Sakura eventually joining them. Orochimaru intends to take his body, but Sasuke turns against him and is reported to have killed him. Later events reveal that Orochimaru remains absorbed and suppressed within Sasuke 87 90 137 142 151.

Sasuke accepts Sakura’s request to accompany his revenge mission and recruits Suigetsu and Jūgo. Together they form Team Snake, later renamed Team Hawk. Hearing that Haku restrained the Three-Tails makes Sasuke reassess his peers’ growth and wonder how powerful Naruto has become 142.

Learning the massacre’s truth

Before Sasuke meets Itachi, Naruto explains the Uchiha’s political isolation and alleges that Konoha’s leadership manipulated Itachi into turning against his clan. Naruto states that Itachi carried out the massacre after securing a promise that Sasuke would be spared. Sasuke attacks the reincarnated Third Hokage, then breaks down as memories of his brother’s kindness return 144 145.

Sasuke initially approaches Itachi seeking answers rather than an immediate killing. Itachi refuses to explain and resumes portraying himself as a cruel brother who wants Sasuke’s eyes. The performance exploits Sasuke’s Tsukuyomi-related trauma and causes him to doubt Naruto’s account 147 148 149.

Their battle exhausts Sasuke despite his weapons, cursed-seal techniques, and Kirin. Orochimaru emerges when Sasuke can no longer suppress him, and Itachi seals him with the Totsuka Blade. Itachi then touches Sasuke’s forehead and apologizes, finally confirming his affection. Sasuke awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan, while Naruto prevents Itachi’s death 150 151.

Return to Konoha and collective revenge

Sasuke redirects his hatred toward Konoha and Danzo. He accepts Naruto’s bargain to save Itachi, but remains suspicious when his brother abruptly begins obeying Naruto. Sasuke does not witness Naruto’s concealed use of Kotoamatsukami on Itachi 151 152 153.

When Obito captures Sakura, Sasuke initially remains focused on Itachi and announces Team Taka’s dissolution. He rejects Obito’s recruitment offer and attacks only after Itachi reminds him that the others are his teammates. Obito easily outmaneuvers him, and Naruto intervenes 154.

Naruto takes Sasuke and Itachi to Root’s base. Sasuke is enraged by Danzo’s implanted Uchiha eyes and helps prevent his escape during the ensuing battle. After recovering, he enthusiastically supports Naruto’s proposal to destroy the Sarutobi and Shimura clans, participating with Susanoo 155 156 163 164.

Still immersed in the bloodshed, Sasuke ignores Sakura’s warning and fires Chidori Sharp Spear through her parents to kill a surviving Sarutobi ninja. He leaves without remorse as she tries to treat their wounds. In his latest direct appearance, he demands that Naruto resurrect the entire Uchiha clan; Naruto refuses, while agreeing separately with Itachi to revive their parents 165 172.

Appearance

  • Clothing: Wears a stylish kimono in his later appearance 172.
  • Weapon placement: Carries the Kusanagi Sword at his waist 172.
  • Sharingan: His Two-Tomoe Sharingan appears as blood-red eyes with two spinning tomoe in each 30.
  • Cursed Seal: Located on his neck; activation spreads black markings across his body and produces purple chakra. His higher transformation includes two large flesh wings 33 35 150.
  • Visible eye strain: Blood remains beneath his eyes after he dismisses Susanoo following the clan massacre 165.

Personality

Sasuke is proud, competitive, and acutely sensitive to being outshone. He repeatedly challenges Naruto after defeats, dismisses Sakura’s reassurance when he wants Naruto’s judgment, and initially treats each new Sharingan advancement as proof that he can overcome stronger opponents 11 28 30 61.

Revenge dominates his decisions. Although he hesitates between his bonds and his ambition, he ultimately accepts the Cursed Seal’s dangers and leaves Konoha to pursue Itachi. Naruto’s rapid growth intensifies his insecurity and helps make Orochimaru’s offer attractive 62 63.

His affection for Itachi survives beneath years of hatred. Once the truth becomes clear, he prioritizes saving his brother over retaining Shisui’s eye and offers Itachi the opportunity to obtain the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 152 164.

That familial devotion does not extend consistently to his teammates or bystanders. He abandons Team Taka during Sakura’s capture, then escalates revenge into collective slaughter. After killing Sakura’s parents despite her warning, he treats their deaths as irrelevant to him 154 165.

  • Prolonged release threatens to consume his body and identity, while unfamiliarity with the enhanced state initially drains his strength 62 70.

  • Suppresses the absorbed Orochimaru until chakra exhaustion allows him to emerge 151.
