Ch. 41False Prosperity
Plot points and events
- Uchiha Yoru shows the visiting shinobi delegations their hotel rooms, warmly flirting with Kurotsuchi and inviting her out. Ōnoki becomes jealous and calls his granddaughter back. Yoru also refuses Mei Terumi’s request for a massage, though she finds him intriguing.
- Yoru orders staff to monitor Kumogakure and charge them for every extra service. The visiting villages, unsettled by Konoha’s rapid development, begin investigating the village.
- From a hidden surveillance room, Yoru watches the visitors and learns that several powerful, uninvited shinobi have entered Konoha. He orders the next phase of a plan to proceed.
- Ao and Darui explore Konoha. Although the villagers appear cheerful and volunteer to help the Hokage, Darui interprets a ragged little girl’s claims that they are forced to work as evidence that Konoha’s prosperity is staged.
- The girl convinces Darui that an abusive uncle exploits her. When Zabuza arrives, she runs to him, drops her coins, and cries after he pushes her aside. Darui assumes Zabuza is the abuser and confronts him.
Character developments and interactions
- Yoru comes across as charming and flirtatious, but also calculating: he exploits the visitors’ suspicions and keeps them under surveillance.
- Ōnoki is protective and jealous of Kurotsuchi’s closeness with Yoru; Kurotsuchi blushes at Yoru’s attention.
- Mei is attracted to Yoru and briefly imagines him as a possible husband, while he declines her offer.
- Darui is compassionate toward the girl but too quick to trust her account, mistaking an apparent setup for proof of Konoha’s decline.
- Zabuza, confused by the girl’s familiarity and unaware of the story she has told, becomes the target of Darui’s anger.
- The visiting leaders dispatch scouts—Darui for Kumogakure and Akatsuchi for Iwagakure—reflecting their growing distrust of Konoha.
Significant themes
- Appearance versus reality: Konoha’s visible prosperity may be genuine, but outsiders interpret unfamiliar scenes through their own suspicions.
- Misinformation and manipulation: The girl’s story leads Darui to a confident but possibly mistaken conclusion, while Yoru appears to be managing the visitors’ perceptions.
- Power and unease: Konoha’s rapid growth makes neighboring villages fear that it could eventually dominate them.
