Background / History
Establishing Her Business
Ning Yu left her family in Heaven Dou City to gain experience in Shrek City. The employees who helped her establish herself became her sworn brothers and sisters through a ceremony involving rooster blood and burned yellow paper. She considers their bond more than a financial arrangement and promises to share her success with them 37 38.
Her shop sells Storage, Defensive, Ranged, Melee, and Support Soul Tools ranging from levels one to six, with Defensive Soul Tools forming its main stock. When Ji Feng visits, she identifies his interest in storage equipment and recommends Shrek’s third-generation commemorative Twenty-Four Bridges Bright Moon Night belt. He pays 70,000 Gold Soul Coins for the 60,000-coin item 30.
Alliance with Ji Feng
Ji Feng subsequently asks Ning Yu to warn him about Shrek Academy’s secret hunts and missions, presenting himself as a bounty hunter. She agrees without charge, citing the Ning Family’s longstanding ties to Shrek and its involvement in supporting Inner Court missions. She offers to return his extra 10,000 Gold Soul Coins, but he tells her to keep them as a gesture of friendship 31.
Ning Yu directs his attention to Tang Ya, a starving Tang Sect girl being persecuted by the Xiang Family Pill Shop. She suggests that helping Tang Ya could provide an opening to Shrek, while also supplying intelligence on the Soul King guarding her, Ma Chuwen 31.
Her interest is personal as well as practical: Ma Chuwen killed her cousin, intercepted her cargo, and insulted her sisters. After Ji Feng defeats him, Ning Yu confronts him and supports Ji Feng with her martial soul. She hesitates when Ma accuses her of violating the great families’ rules, but ultimately accepts Ji Feng’s decision to take his apparently dead body. Meanwhile, she rescues Tang Ya 32 33.
Shelter at Inkstone Village
Expecting retaliation, Ning Yu disguises herself and retreats to Inkstone Village, intending to remain there until the Xiang Family will negotiate. She acknowledges that her sect’s former influence has declined and that Shrek City no longer needs it as it once did 35.
Ning Yu takes in Tang Ya and investigates treatment for her blocked meridians. Elder Zhuang’s requested payment—two catties of rare metal—would cost approximately 240,000 Gold Soul Coins and could rise to 300,000. Ning Yu is unwilling to fund such an expensive treatment herself. Ji Feng instead cures Tang Ya with the Bone Spirit Scimitar, whose capabilities leave Ning Yu both impressed and increasingly curious about his secrets 36.
The Taotao Residence Ambush
Ning Yu accepts Xiang Li’s invitation to negotiate at Taotao Residence, bringing forty-two shop assistants and an offensive Soul Tool. Despite Ji Feng’s warning that the invitation looks like a trap, she believes refusing would disgrace her sect on Soul Tool Street and invite punishment from its leadership 37.
Xiang Li presents three coercive conditions 37 38:
- Her shops must surrender 40 percent of their profits to the Xiang Family.
- She must become his seventh concubine.
- She must strip naked and submit to three lashes as an apology for Ma Chuwen’s fate.
Ning Yu rejects the meeting as insincere, but Xiang Li immediately starts a fight. Her support skills and offensive Soul Tools cannot overcome his fighters’ unnatural regeneration. She escapes to Inkstone Village with the survivors; twenty-one of her forty-two employees are dead, only three bodies are recovered, and everyone who returns is severely injured 38.
After receiving treatment, she establishes a mourning hall and keeps vigil alone. Filled with remorse, she expects Xiang Li to attack again and urges Ji Feng to take Tang Ya away rather than become further entangled 38.
Choosing Retreat
Ji Feng discovers monkey blood on the weapons used in the battle. Ning Yu confirms that the blood is not human and considers whether the enemy fighters were blood-based puppets. Warehouse keeper He Jingquan proposes that a blood-martial-soul expert from the Body Sect supplied them, but this remains a theory. Ning Yu recognizes that she is badly outmatched if such an expert is involved 39.
She initially argues that an open challenge must be answered openly to preserve the sect’s standing. Ji Feng counters that dead members cannot defend their banner or enforce its rules. With the warehouse keeper supporting withdrawal, Ning Yu finally agrees to hide in the Rainbow Mountain Soul Zone. She leaves Inkstone Village with the shop assistants at 1 a.m., before Xiang Li arrives at 2:30 a.m.; Ji Feng remains behind 40.
Appearance
Ning Yu is introduced as a luxurious-looking proprietress and is later described as tall and curvaceous 30 35 37.
- Usual presentation: Lavish clothing consistent with her sect’s tastes 35.
- Disguise: A black feathered gown and a formal hat with its brim pulled low 35.
- Later attire: A fitted dark long dress; she also wears leather boots during her confrontation with Ma Chuwen 33 37.
Personality
Ning Yu is attentive and politically resourceful. She recognizes a customer’s needs, offers useful intelligence, and sees Tang Ya’s rescue as an opportunity to advance both Ji Feng’s interests and her own vendetta. Ji Feng’s generosity gives her a favorable impression of him, while his unusual equipment prompts her to suspect that he possesses deeper secrets 30 31 36.
Her loyalty to her sect and sworn companions initially outweighs concern for her own safety. She treats Jianghu conventions as essential to business and reputation, believing that refusing a formal invitation would damage everyone associated with her. The deaths at Taotao Residence expose the limits of that belief: she accepts responsibility, warns her allies to escape, and eventually agrees that survival must take priority over answering an open challenge 37 38 40.
Abilities & Skills
Seven Treasures Glazed Tile
Ning Yu’s martial soul provides support enhancements rather than direct offensive power. During the Taotao Residence battle, she applies all five of her demonstrated skills to herself and her two guards 38.
| Soul Skill | Enhancement | Demonstrated Use |
|---|---|---|
| First: Strength | Strength | Used in her five-skill support sequence 38 |
| Second: Speed | Speed | Used in her five-skill support sequence 38 |
| Third: Soul | Soul power | Used in her five-skill support sequence 38 |
| Fourth: Defense | Defense | Used in her five-skill support sequence 38 |
| Fifth: Attack | Attack | Used in her five-skill support sequence 38 |
- Her support enhances Ji Feng’s physique and accelerates his recovery; it does not directly heal his wounds 33.
- During the Xiang Family battle, her continuous support at least doubles her employees’ fighting strength 39.
- Despite these enhancements, her side cannot overcome the enemy fighters’ regeneration 38 39.
Seven Apertures Exquisite Heart
Ning Yu has cultivated the Seven Apertures Exquisite Heart to its highest level 38.
- She can control five soul skills and a Soul Tool simultaneously 38.
- This allows her to maintain group support while personally attacking with offensive equipment 38.
Soul Tool Expertise
Her business gives her practical familiarity with Soul Tool categories, grades, and prices 30 36.
- Identifies the Bone Spirit Scimitar as a Grade Five Soul Tool capable of storing soul power independently 36.
- Recognizes independent soul-power storage as a research direction associated with the Sun Moon Empire’s Bright Virtue Hall 36.
- Uses both melee and ranged offensive Soul Tools in battle; the supplied chapters do not identify her as their manufacturer 38.
Intelligence and Factional Knowledge
- Can seek information about Shrek’s Inner Court missions through Ning Family connections 31.
- Supplies Ma Chuwen’s martial soul and combat information, enabling Ji Feng to plan a swift attack 31 33.
- Knows about Sun Moon Empire border restrictions and explains the formation and characteristics of soul lands 35 40.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Seven-colored gemstone shortsword — Used to stab Xiang Li’s saber-wielding guard. Its classification varies: Chapter 37 calls it a level-six Soul Tool, while Chapter 38 describes the gemstone shortsword as a Class Five offensive Soul Tool 37 38.
- Thunder-Gathering Cannon — Class Five ranged Soul Tool that gathers lightning energy. Its blast shatters the saber-wielding guard’s body, but he immediately regenerates 38.
- Concealing clothing — Black gown and low-brimmed hat worn while avoiding Xiang Family retaliation 35.
Relationships
- Ji Feng — Customer turned ally. She supplies intelligence and support, while he challenges her reliance on Jianghu rules and persuades her to retreat after the ambush 30 31 33 38 40.
- Tang Ya — Takes her into shelter after rescuing her from the Xiang Family’s persecution and helps investigate treatment for her blocked meridians 33 35 36.
- Shop employees — Sworn brothers and sisters who helped establish her business. Their deaths leave her remorseful and responsible for protecting the survivors 37 38 40.
- Ma Chuwen — Personal enemy responsible for her cousin’s death, cargo interceptions, and insults against her sisters 33.
- Xiang Li — Rival businessman who attempts to seize her profits and coerce her into concubinage before attacking her delegation 37 38.
- He Jingquan — Warehouse keeper who proposes the blood-puppet explanation and supports withdrawing to the Rainbow Mountain Soul Zone 39 40.
- Bai Xuesong — Employee who loses his sister Xiaoyu in the ambush. Ning Yu allows him to keep her Soul Tool longsword as a memento 39.
