Background

Chen Xuan originated as the Profound Origin Water Control Banner. During an eighty-one-bolt heavenly punishment tribulation, Tongtian shielded him from the first twenty-seven strikes, allowing Chen Xuan to condense the banner into a physical body with the Nine Heavens Breath Soil and Nine Revolutions Golden Pills. He later absorbed golden tribulation lightning, formed his sea of consciousness, and entered the Golden Immortal realm 2 3.

Although Dao Ancestor Hongjun invited him into the Profound School, Chen Xuan chose Tongtian as his master. He regarded Tongtian as both his savior and his idol, accepting the danger of the Intercepting Sect's future karma in order to help change its fate 3 4 6.

Hongjun subsequently gave Chen Xuan personal instruction in the complete Profound School orthodox Dao, from Earth Immortal through Great Luo Golden Immortal, and allowed him to choose treasures first at Treasure Distribution Cliff. Chen Xuan took the banners and treasures he considered necessary rather than emptying the cliff, earning Hongjun's approval 18.

Appearance

Chen Xuan's present body was formed by refining his original banner into flesh during his transformation tribulation 2.

Personality

Chen Xuan is deeply loyal to those who aided him. His decision to become Tongtian's disciple stems from gratitude and a determination to protect the Intercepting Sect despite knowing its future calamity 4 6. He treats Tongtian as more than a teacher, describing a teacher as a father for life 124.

He is calculating, opportunistic, and highly protective of his interests. Chen Xuan avoids unnecessary karmic debts, collects useful spiritual roots and treasures, and frequently manipulates rivals or allies to secure advantages for the Intercepting Sect 9 18 33 267. He nevertheless shows restraint when taking treasures and accepts that cultivation must proceed steadily 18 19.

His methods can be severe: he disciplines sect members harshly, binds Daoist Duobao's soul against betrayal, and later controls Chang Er Ding Guang Xian and Vairocana Immortal through their Heavenly Dao Merit 6 21 241. At the same time, he repeatedly protects disciples, shares cultivation knowledge, and accepts personal blame to shield those he considers family 47 143 244.
