Background / History
Yuanshi Tianzun is one of the Three Pure Ones, alongside Taishang Laozi and Tongtian, and is identified as part of Pangu's orthodox lineage. He first appears at Mount Buzhou when the Thirty-Sixth Grade Creation Green Lotus is born, joining the struggle over the treasure with his brothers, Fuxi, Nüwa, Jieyin, and Zhunti 1.
When Chen Xuan's sentience is exposed and Heavenly Punishment descends, Yuanshi initially emphasizes the danger of intervening: the tribulation contains eighty-one lightning bolts, each twice as powerful as the last, and rescuing Chen Xuan would leave the Three Pure Ones severely weakened 2. After Tongtian chooses to repay the karmic debt and intervenes, Yuanshi and Taishang Laozi ultimately assist Chen Xuan's survival 2. Once Chen Xuan survives, Yuanshi immediately attempts to accept him as a disciple, competing with both Taishang Laozi and Tongtian 3.
Following Taishang Laozi's breakthrough, Yuanshi argues that Chen Xuan should study the Yuqing Artifact Dao under him rather than Tongtian's formations 5. Chen Xuan later spends three hundred years learning the Yuqing Artifact Dao, though Yuanshi is dissatisfied that his student focuses on refining practical vessels and stoves rather than the results Yuanshi expects 14.
At Dao Ancestor Hongjun's distribution of treasures, Yuanshi receives Primordial Violet Qi and the Pangu Banner, an Innate Supreme Treasure able to suppress a great sect's destiny 25. He subsequently founds the Chan Sect and becomes a Saint 85.
Personality
Yuanshi is proud of Pangu's orthodox lineage and deeply prejudiced against those he considers inferior. During the conflict with the Demon Race, he dismisses them as “feathered, horned, wet-born, and egg-hatched creatures” and is prepared to tear down the Demon Race Heavenly Court over its treatment of Chen Xuan 41.
He is exacting and punitive toward his own disciples. After their poor performance in a conflict with the Western Sect, he orders them into seclusion for a thousand years and threatens ten thousand years of wall-facing if they fail to improve 96. He similarly sends Guang Chengzi to Repentance Cliff for three thousand years after Guang Chengzi's attempted sneak attack on Zhao Gongming disgraces the Chan Sect 200.
Despite his arrogance, Yuanshi is fiercely protective of his disciples. He intervenes personally when Guang Chengzi is threatened by Zhao Gongming's Golden Flood Dragon Scissors, even though this risks escalating the conflict with Tongtian 200. His concern for the Chan Sect's standing also drives much of his conduct during the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation 236.
