Background / History

Tongtian first appears opposing Daoist Zhunti's attempt to claim the Thirty-Sixth Grade Creation Green Lotus for the West, insisting that it was a treasure of the East. 1 When Chen Xuan's existence as the Profound Origin Water Control Banner draws eighty-one bolts of Heavenly Punishment, Tongtian considers the Three Pure Ones indebted for exposing the banner's aura. He enters the tribulation alone, uses the Qingping Sword to cut down twenty-seven lightning bolts, and returns to defend Chen Xuan again after recovering with a Nine Revolutions Golden Pill. 2

Chen Xuan survives, transforms, and kneels before Tongtian in gratitude. Although Dao Ancestor Hongjun orders Chen Xuan into the Profound School, Chen Xuan recognizes Tongtian as his master; Hongjun subsequently orders all Three Pure Ones to teach him together. 3 4 Tongtian later accepts disciples through unconventional means, including transforming the Purple-Yellow Gourd into the Water-Fire Disciple and taking Daoist Duobao after his transformation. 10

Before establishing his Great Teaching, Tongtian is persuaded by Chen Xuan to delay his ascension until a suitable destiny-suppressing treasure can be secured. He and Chen Xuan consult Dao Ancestor Hongjun, who refines Primordial Violet Qi into the Primordial Demon Suppressing Bell. Tongtian then establishes the Intercepting Sect to “intercept a sliver of life” for all living beings. 85 87 88

After the Three Pure Ones split, Tongtian establishes Golden Turtle Island as his Dao Field and Biyou Palace as the Intercepting Sect's sacred hall. 127 He later accepts that the sect must prepare for the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation, supporting Chen Xuan's plans to protect disciples, compete for luck, and practice the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation. 192 236 272

Personality

Tongtian is protective and deeply responsive to perceived debts. He risks his own cultivation to save Chen Xuan, later confronting the Western Sect and the Demon Race whenever they threaten his disciples or their interests. 2 48 56

He is blunt, fiery, and willing to escalate conflicts through force. When Daoist Zhunti refuses to yield the Six Roots of Purity Bamboo, Tongtian deploys the Immortal Slaughtering Formation around Western Spiritual Mountain; once Zhunti hands over the treasure, however, Tongtian immediately honors his promise and withdraws the formation. 48 49

Despite his status, Tongtian has an informal, almost familial relationship with Chen Xuan. He regularly threatens Chen Xuan with the Purple Lightning Hammer, yet trusts his judgment on sect affairs and shows paternal concern for his safety. 124 224 225 His longing to reconcile with Taishang Laozi and Yuanshi Tianzun also leaves him initially optimistic about Yuanshi's intentions. 240

After receiving the Primordial Demon Suppressing Bell, he establishes the Intercepting Sect, whose doctrine offers all living beings a chance at survival. 85 87 88

Protector of the Intercepting Sect

Tongtian sets clear limits on Sage interference: disciples may decide life and death among themselves, but any Sage who bullies or massacres his disciples will face Tongtian personally. 248 He acts on this principle when confronting Daoist Zhunti over Yaoji and when supporting Chen Xuan against threats to the sect. 234 248

Investiture of the Gods Preparations

Tongtian eventually accepts Chen Xuan's warnings that the Intercepting Sect may become a central target of the next Heavenly Kalpa. He supports efforts to secure Human Race luck, prepare disciples, and avoid a repeat of the sect's predicted destruction. 192 234 236
