Ch. 1The River God's Gift
Plot points and events
- University student Jun Wangchen sits by a lake, despondent after his girlfriend of three years leaves him for a wealthy man. He also accidentally drops his hard-earned iPhone into the water.
- An immortal-looking “River God” appears and offers him a choice between a gold and silver phone. Jun honestly rejects both, explaining that neither is his. The River God refuses to retrieve the lost iPhone, then gives Jun a strange oversized Band-Aid that he says can also be a sanitary pad.
- After putting Jun into a mysterious sleep, the River God disappears. The object becomes a phone with a groundhog-like shape. Its WeChat contacts include famous gods, immortals, and ghosts, and its group chat distributes supernatural items through red envelopes.
- Jun claims a red envelope from Primordial Heaven Venerable and withdraws an “Energy Hat,” which physically appears in his hand. Though he initially suspects a scam, he puts on the green hat to test it. Nothing seems to happen, and passersby laugh at him.
- Angry and humiliated, Jun kicks a tree. The hat’s power suddenly activates, and his kick snaps the tree with tremendous force.
Character development
- Jun begins bitter, broke, and defeated by his breakup and lost phone, but remains quick-witted and honest when confronted by the River God.
- His disbelief and cynicism persist even after receiving the mysterious phone and hat. The tree-breaking kick provides the first undeniable sign that his circumstances—and perhaps his abilities—have changed.
Character interactions
- Jun’s memories of his ex-girlfriend and her wealthy new partner fuel his resentment and sense of powerlessness.
- His exchanges with the boastful, eccentric River God are comic and confrontational: Jun questions the old man’s behavior, while the River God flatters himself and gives Jun an absurd gift.
- The WeChat group connects Jun to supernatural figures, though he has not yet interacted with them directly.
Significant themes
- Misfortune and reversal: Jun’s ordinary bad luck gives way to a potentially extraordinary opportunity.
- Disbelief versus the supernatural: Jun initially dismisses the phone and its contacts as a scam, even as events challenge his rational assumptions.
- Humiliation and self-worth: The breakup, poverty, and public laughter intensify Jun’s frustration, while the hat’s power hints that he may gain a way to change his position.
- Comedy through contrast: Slapstick and irreverent jokes undercut the dramatic arrival of gods and supernatural power.
