Background / History
Yu Xiaogang is a member of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan and the cousin of Yu Luomian. He was once romantically involved with Liu Erlong, but abandoned her after learning of their kinship, leaving her to face the clan’s gossip alone. This permanently damaged Yu Luomian’s opinion of him. 162
He became Tang San’s master after identifying Tang San as a twin martial soul possessor at Notting City Junior Soul Master Academy. Tang San developed intense faith in Yu Xiaogang’s theories and continued to defend him despite repeated setbacks. 443 274
Yu Xiaogang had a past relationship with Bibi Dong, later Pope of Spirit Hall. He publicly invoked this connection during a confrontation over his “Reverse Sacrifice” theory, provoking Xue Qinghe to strike him for defaming Bibi Dong. 290
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is intensely prideful about his status as a theorist. He repeatedly presents his research as the product of exceptional insight, reacts strongly to criticism of his theories, and treats Tang San’s accomplishments as validation of his guidance. 274 290 293
His confidence often becomes arrogance. He has claimed others’ research as the basis for his own planned work, misrepresented the origin of Tang San’s Purple Demon Eyes Secret Method, and used his lineage or connections to bolster his authority. 162 178 271
Despite his self-interest, Yu Xiaogang is protective of Tang San. He accepted responsibility for Tang San’s interference with Han Tao’s Illusion, defended Tang San against Sword Douluo, and later chose to cover Tang San’s retreat. 142 277 443
Abilities & Skills
Soul Master Theory
Yu Xiaogang specializes in martial soul, bloodline, and training theories, although several of his conclusions are challenged or disproven in the story.
- Proposed the “Ten Core Competitiveness of Martial Souls” and later planned a bloodline-focused counterpart, the “Ten Core Competitiveness of Bloodlines.” 221 178
- Claimed a “Seven-in-One Martial Soul Fusion Skill” could have enabled Shrek Academy to defeat the Star Luo Royal Team. 193
- Proposed Reverse Sacrifice, a process intended to recreate a soul beast from a soul master’s spirit ring and spirit bone. 290
- Suggested bloodline absorption and transfusion theories; Tang San’s bloodline research caused adverse consequences for Tang San’s martial soul development. 279 384
- Later acknowledged that mistakes in his bloodline research had made Tang San “pay a certain price,” while still valuing the experience gained from them. 279
Training Instruction
Yu Xiaogang devised demanding physical-training programs for Shrek Academy and the Clear Sky Sect.
- Required Clear Sky Sect disciples to run ten laps around the sect’s back mountain each morning, totaling roughly seventy kilometers. 222
- Initially allowed Soul Power-assisted running for one week, then prohibited Soul Power use. 222
- Introduced weighted-running training and considered using Clear Sky Hammers as individualized weights. 222
- His Clear Sky Sect regimen produced measurable improvements in completion time, though its long-term danger was not recognized at the time. 226
- Shrek students under his later training accumulated microscopic injuries to their muscles, bones, and meridians without treatment support. 306
Strategic Planning
Yu Xiaogang can formulate aggressive faction-level plans and exploit leverage against opponents.
- Planned an open attack on Heaven Dou Imperial Palace intended to destroy Xue Qinghe’s meridians. 267
- Suggested using Bamboo Forest Village to force Zhu Qi into compliance and pressure Han Tao. 431
- After his release from prison, supported Tang San’s plan to use multiple poisons against Ye Lingling. 432
- Attempted to identify Xue Qinghe’s martial soul through blood absorption by other princes. 278
Equipment / Items
- Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan token — used to establish the clan’s backing before Emperor Xue Ye. 271
- God’s Handbook — claimed by Yu Xiaogang to be a legacy gifted by surviving members of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. 479
Relationships
- Tang San — Disciple. Tang San regards Yu Xiaogang with deep reverence and repeatedly defends his theories; Yu Xiaogang protects and directs him, though his guidance has also harmed Tang San’s martial soul development. 142 279 431 443
- Liu Erlong — Former lover and fellow member of the Golden Iron Triangle. Yu Xiaogang abandoned her after learning they were related; they later unsuccessfully attempted martial soul fusion without Flender. 162 432
- Flender — Fellow member of the Golden Iron Triangle and ally in efforts to help Yu Xiaogang advance. 224
- Bibi Dong — Former lover and Pope of Spirit Hall. Their past connection remains a point of tension, and she later protected him from Han Tao despite his hostility toward her. 290 582
- Yu Yuanzhen — Father and Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan patriarch. Yu Yuanzhen openly expressed disgust toward Yu Xiaogang and prioritized Yu Tianheng over him. 175
- Yu Luomian — Cousin. Yu Luomian despises Yu Xiaogang for abandoning Liu Erlong and for falsely claiming the Purple Demon Eyes as a clan secret method. 162
- Han Tao — Rival theorist and adversary. Yu Xiaogang resented Han Tao’s rapid growth, was repeatedly humiliated or manipulated by him, and later accused him of Tang San’s death. 103 187 582
- Qin Ming — Shrek Academy graduate and collaborator in replacing the Heaven Dou Royal Team with Shrek’s team; Qin Ming later tortured Yu Xiaogang in prison. 193 431
- Yu Tianheng — Clan relative whose injury led to Yu Xiaogang nearly being drained of blood for a transfusion. 175
- Xue Qinghe — Opposed Yu Xiaogang’s conclusions on martial soul identity and Reverse Sacrifice; struck him after he invoked Bibi Dong. 278 290
Story Role / Major Arcs
National Elite Soul Master Competition
Yu Xiaogang attempted to prevent Canghui Academy’s disqualification by framing Shi Nian’s attack on Han Tao as a personal matter. His reasoning was dismissed, and his hostility toward Han Tao stemmed in part from Han Tao surpassing Tang San despite possessing only level-one Innate Soul Power. 103
He later accepted responsibility for Tang San breaking Han Tao’s Illusion, claiming the Illusion and Poison Barrier had obstructed his view. 142
Purple Demon Eyes Dispute
Yu Xiaogang falsely claimed Tang San’s Purple Demon Eyes Secret Method belonged to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Yu Luomian exposed the lie internally, having never heard of such a clan secret method. 162
He subsequently sought to turn bloodline-transfusion research into his own published theory, envisioning personal fame from the resulting work. 178
Clear Sky Sect Guidance
After Tang San joined the Clear Sky Sect, Yu Xiaogang offered theoretical guidance to its disciples and implemented a six-month special-training program. The program initially showed visible results and earned Tang Xiao’s approval. 221 226
Yu Xiaogang later claimed responsibility for the degeneration of Tang San’s Clear Sky Hammer, presenting it as a necessary stage before evolution. 227
Heaven Dou and Seven Treasure Sect Conflict
Yu Xiaogang defended his analysis of Xue Qinghe’s martial soul against Sword Douluo, was injured in the ensuing clash, and threatened the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect when Tang San was endangered. 277 278
His guarantee that Xue Qinghe possessed a Swan martial soul was later revealed to be wrong when Xue Qinghe’s Six-Winged Angel martial soul became known. 396
Imprisonment and Release
Yu Xiaogang was imprisoned in Heaven Dou Empire’s prison, where Qin Ming tortured him and Han Tao and Ye Lingling conducted experiments on him while providing food and treatment. Tang San and Oscar eventually found and freed him. 431
Immediately after his release, Yu Xiaogang resumed advising Tang San’s retaliation against Ye Lingling and Han Tao, endorsing coercion against Bamboo Forest Village. 431 432
Revenge for Tang San
After Tang San’s death, Yu Xiaogang confronted Han Tao alongside Yu Tianheng and demanded to know whether Han Tao had killed his disciple. Han Tao confirmed Tang San’s death, and Yu Xiaogang vowed vengeance despite being dismissed as a Great Soul Master. 582
