History
Winterfell and Eddard’s death
Robb grows up at Winterfell alongside his siblings, Jon Snow, and Theon Greyjoy. When Eddard prepares to become Hand of the King, he decides that Robb should remain behind to learn how to rule the North 116 117.
After Eddard’s execution, Robb calls the northern banners. Thousands gather at Moat Cailin to avenge his father 131. By the early campaign to relieve Riverrun, Robb has become King in the North. With the Lannisters controlling the available crossings, he initially proposes storming the Twins. Roose Bolton instead presents Walder Frey’s offer: passage across the Green Fork and Frey allegiance in exchange for Robb marrying a Frey daughter. Robb accepts the pact despite Catelyn’s objections 462.
Westerlands campaign
Robb’s army wins repeated victories in the Westerlands over two months, including battles against superior numbers. He intends to draw Tywin Lannister away from Harrenhal and ambush his main force, but Edmure Tully’s failure to dislodge Tywin stalls the plan 193 194.
The Targaryen return forces Robb to reconsider the war. Reports credit Viserys with ten dragons, control of Dragonstone and Driftmark, and an army of roughly fifty thousand. Robb chooses temporary neutrality while continuing his campaign against Tywin. He also hopes to capture Westerlands nobles who can be exchanged for Sansa and Arya, and privately accepts that submission may be necessary to secure his sisters’ release 193 195.
During the capture of the Crag, Robb is wounded and treated by Jeyne Westerling. They fall in love but initially conceal their relationship because of his Frey betrothal. Jeyne later becomes pregnant, and Robb promises to marry her 195 252. His broken marriage pact costs him Frey troops and support, worsening the army’s supply problems 250 462.
Journey to King’s Landing
Viserys offers ceasefire negotiations and reports that both Stark sisters are safe. Sansa’s own letter helps convince Robb to attend personally. With provisions dwindling, troops exhausted, and winter approaching, he decides that protecting the North outweighs preserving his crown 250 268.
Before leaving, Robb appoints Rickard Karstark to command the army, with Greatjon Umber and the Blackfish assisting. He also orders trusted allies to watch Roose Bolton and act if Bolton makes a suspicious move 253.
Robb’s party is attacked on the journey by apparent trained assassins disguised as bandits, suffering deaths and injuries. He reaches King’s Landing exhausted, with his left arm bandaged, but maintains a composed public bearing. The sight of Cersei and Joffrey’s severed heads offers no restoration of what his family has lost 266 267.
Truce and fealty
Robb initially appears before Viserys as King in the North and does not kneel. He negotiates protections for northern self-government before accepting the Iron Throne’s authority 267 268.
| Issue | Robb’s request | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Northern laws and faith | No interference from the Iron Throne | Viserys agrees 267. |
| Southern military service | Permanent exemption, with supplies provided instead | Viserys grants a five-year exemption from providing troops, not a permanent one 267. |
| Sansa and Arya | Permission to return north | Viserys states that they are guests, not hostages, and may leave whenever they wish 268. |
| Taxes | Five years of relief | Robb accepts a two-year concession; he later describes it as two years without taxes 268 283. |
| Allegiance | Peace on terms protecting the North | Robb kneels and pledges House Stark’s loyalty to Targaryen rule 268. |
Viserys also confirms the danger posed by the Others and explains Benjen Stark’s half-undead condition. Robb accepts the need to reinforce the Night’s Watch and cooperate against the coming Long Night 268.
Reunited with Sansa and Arya, Robb is relieved but remains preoccupied with the attack on his party. He suspects Roose Bolton intended to prolong the northern war and weaken House Stark; Viserys neither confirms nor resolves that suspicion 269. Both sisters ultimately choose to remain in King’s Landing 271 283.
Return and reconstruction
Viserys provides a hundred-man escort for Robb’s return. At the northern camp outside the Crag, Robb begins explaining the settlement and preparing the army’s withdrawal. The tax and troop concessions, together with the approaching harvest, support his argument for ending the campaign 283.
Back at Winterfell, Robb faces demands for food, compensation, coastal defense, and supplies for the Night’s Watch. He has at least doubled the castle’s guard strength since the war, but reconstruction leaves him dependent on wealthy northern houses. Roose becomes increasingly evasive, while Wyman Manderly requires compromises in exchange for White Harbor’s support 383 384 385.
Robb respectfully welcomes Viserys to Winterfell and thanks him for destroying Victarion Greyjoy’s fleet and arranging Free Folk settlement in the Gift. His gratitude remains mixed with unease over Targaryen power 387. In private, he admits that the North has exhausted its grain reserves and cannot send more food to the Wall. Viserys promises southern troops and supplies, rejecting Robb’s tentative suggestion of capturing a wight to prove the threat 392.
Jon’s parentage and the crypt crisis
While guiding Viserys through the Stark crypts, Robb learns that Lyanna went south willingly with Rhaegar Targaryen and that Jon is their son. He comes to understand Eddard’s secrecy as the fulfillment of a promise to protect Lyanna’s child. Robb agrees to preserve Jon’s identity until the threat of the Others has passed 400 401.
The revelation also changes Robb’s succession plans. Although he had considered Jon his preferred heir and did not object to his supposed illegitimacy, he decides that Jon’s Targaryen parentage prevents him from inheriting House Stark. Robb considers sending his family south for safety, possibly after Jeyne gives birth 405.
Deeper in the crypts, Robb encounters Benjen fully transformed into an Other. A powerful female Other subsequently attacks him, leaving his shoulder pierced and half his body frozen. Viserys blocks a further strike with Blackfyre and orders soldiers to remove Robb, despite his desire to remain and defend his family’s honor 416 418 425.
After escaping, Robb sends a warning to Rhaenys, believing that she and Meleys may be the only available force capable of confronting the danger below Winterfell. He explains his decision to Viserys while suffering severe frostbite 426.
Mobilization for the Wall
Robb sends orders throughout the North to muster fighting men and provisions for the Wall. His forces begin contributing before the other houses, and he prepares to lead Stark soldiers north personally. He hopes the campaign will both defend the North and consolidate its unity 436 452 453 461.
Ramsay Bolton attempts to undermine Robb’s confidence in Jon through an anonymous accusation of collaboration with the Boltons. Robb dismisses the allegation without investigating it and writes to warn Jon that someone may be targeting him. His reply is too late to reach Jon before the Bolton contingent leaves the Dreadfort 461 462.
Appearance
- Build: Described as a sturdy young man when Robert visits Winterfell 116.
- Eyes: Gray; his gaze is repeatedly described as composed and watchful 250 266 267.
- War-worn features: At thirteen, his exhaustion makes him look older than his years. Later, he develops dark stubble and pronounced shadows beneath his eyes 266 384.
- Clothing: Wears black clothes during his royal audience and a thick, dark gray fur coat in Winterfell’s crypts 267 399.
- Injuries: Arrives in King’s Landing with a bandaged left arm; later suffers a bloodied shoulder wound and severe frostbite from an ice sword 266 425.
Personality
Robb’s initial campaign is driven by grief and vengeance, but responsibility increasingly shapes his decisions. He distinguishes the Lannisters’ responsibility for Eddard’s death from older Targaryen grievances and accepts negotiation when continued war threatens the North’s survival 131 195 252.
He remains deeply attached to his family. His sisters’ danger troubles his dreams, and his confidence in Jon survives political pressure and deliberate attempts to discredit him. Nevertheless, sympathy for Catelyn leads him to abandon a plan to recall Jon to Winterfell and give him important governing duties 195 452 461.
Robb measures himself against Eddard’s honor while questioning whether honor alone can preserve a house. He regrets breaking the Frey marriage pact for personal desire, yet increasingly sees compromise and ruthlessness as possible necessities. His reluctance to retreat from the crypts shows that Stark honor still has a powerful hold on him 390 418.
His judgment of Viserys is cautious rather than absolute: he recognizes the king’s strength but reserves judgment on whether he will be a good ruler. Over time, Robb finds Viserys’s calculated conduct more understandable than Aerys’s madness, without ceasing to fear him 271 390.
