Background / History

Founding and public mandate

Pompey Gattuso proposed Chaldea as an observatory dedicated to monitoring and protecting human civilization. Its name derives from the Chaldeans' association with astronomy, astrology, star-gazing, and the preservation of celestial maps 289.

The project became a politically acceptable bridge between the Mystic Side and secular governments: a publicly funded, non-military research institution where alchemy and magecraft could be openly studied alongside conventional science. The Gattuso Family supplied most of the resources, while the United Nations and major powers approved the project 299.

Public reporting describes Chaldea as an Antarctic institution established after abnormal weather in 2004, tasked with simulating Earth's environment, forecasting future development, and proposing responses to potential disasters 299.

Early administration

Chaldea's early years were marked by poor management, rapid staff turnover, and long periods without effective leadership while Director Pompey was absent. Caesar Gattuso later arrived and used his leadership ability to impose order on the facility 301.

Pompey secretly initiated Project Beta, the Heroic Spirit Summoning System, and successfully summoned Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci remained at Chaldea to improve the system and stabilize summoned Servants' Spirit Origins 301 305.

An international Observation Team was created to independently supervise Chaldea. Its members are institutionally attached to Chaldea but administratively answer to outside organizations, including the Spiral Hall, Clock Tower, Holy Church, and Secret Society 300.

Exposure of the former regime

Emiya's inspection team uncovered discrepancies in Chaldea's financial records and evidence of early human experimentation. The former administration had conducted Servant-fusion experiments; a summoned Heroic Spirit's refusal caused the project to go out of control and halted the Pseudo-Servant program 306 307 330.

Pompey was subsequently confirmed to be compromised. Caesar assumed the directorship and approved a three-part strategy: construct a new Chaldea, strengthen defenses, and infiltrate hostile forces through covert agents 325 336.

After the destruction of the outside world, Chaldea discovered that it existed within Imaginary Space. Da Vinci identified seven crucial historical Singularities whose restoration was necessary to recover human history 352.
