Background / History
Historical reputation
Madara is remembered as the powerful Uchiha who founded Konoha alongside Hashirama Senju and helped bring peace to a war-torn world. Ōnoki regards him as a benchmark for exceptional shinobi strength, while displaced Uchiha clansmen remember Konoha’s founding as their clan’s greatest moment of glory 55 75.
Sora also recalls that Madara obtained Hashirama’s flesh, transplanted it into himself, and awakened the Rinnegan 73.
Warring States encounter
Sora and Tsunade identify the era they have entered through reports that Madara leads the Uchiha and that only the Senju’s strongest fighter can oppose him. Sora proposes that their destination may be a parallel timeline rather than their own past 144 145.
When Sora enters the Uchiha settlement to demand an end to the war with the Senju, Madara questions his identity and authorizes Izuna to test him. He warns Izuna against carelessness, recognizes Sora’s unusual techniques, and helps guide his brother’s newly awakened Susanoo during the duel 159 162 163.
After Izuna loses, Madara catches him and acknowledges Sora’s strength. Despite resenting Sora’s warning, he declines an immediate confrontation: defeating Sora would require his full strength, and exhausting both Uchiha brothers could leave the clan vulnerable to an enemy attack 165 166.
Battle at the Uzumaki Clan
Madara arrives atop the controlled Nine-Tails during the Ninja Clan Alliance’s attack on the Uzumaki. He says he wants to test Hashirama’s newly learned senjutsu, then takes control of six additional tailed beasts. Sora immediately frees the Seven-Tails with a Contract Seal, leaving Madara with six controlled beasts in total 214.
Madara fights Sora with his Gunbai, Fire Release, ocular clones, and increasingly powerful Susanoo forms. Sora breaks through his armored defense and later overwhelms Madara and the Nine-Tails’ combined counterattack. Hashirama intervenes with Sage Art: Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands to save Madara’s life 215 216 217 220.
Izuna then sacrifices the use of his own Sharingan to grant Madara temporary Eternal Mangekyō power. Madara refuses Hashirama’s plea to stop, kicks him away, and incapacitates Mito through Tsukuyomi infused with Amaterasu before resuming his battle with Sora 221 222.
Sora’s own Sharingan evolves during the confrontation. Their Perfect Susanoo clash, but Sora neutralizes Madara’s black-flame feints with Boundary of Reality and Illusion. Madara is defeated as his borrowed power runs low and his eyesight begins failing 223 224 225 226 227.
Cooperation and Konoha’s founding
Sora uses Kotoamatsukami to alter Madara’s will, making him willing to set aside old grievances and cooperate with the Senju. Hashirama asks that Madara be spared and takes him into his care 227.
After Sora proposes Konoha’s establishment, Hashirama brings Madara back to the Senju compound. The two speak through the night; Madara then returns to his clan and publicly announces that the Uchiha and Senju will unite to establish Konoha Ninja Village 228 230.
Resurrection and renewed conflict
In the later conflict with Obito, Obito uses his final strength to resurrect Madara rather than Rin. Madara says Obito told him about Sora in the Pure Land and promises to repay Obito by killing him. He absorbs the evolved Ten-Tails and immediately enters Six Paths Mode 287.
Even with this transformation, Madara is overwhelmed by Sora’s combined Super Sage Mode, Susanoo, and Strength of a Hundred Technique. After his Limbo defense is countered and he suffers a heavy blow, he retreats toward shore; Sora infers that he intends to retrieve his other Rinnegan 288.
By his next supplied appearance, Madara possesses both Rinnegan and has cast Infinite Tsukuyomi. He believes he has realized his dream of peace, but is shocked when Sora appears before him, free of the illusion 290.
Appearance
- Hair: Long black hair in his Warring States appearances and immediately after resurrection; turns white upon entering Six Paths Mode 159 214 287.
- Clothing: Armor, described as samurai armor during the Uzumaki battle and Warring States-era armor upon resurrection 214 287.
- Carried weapon: A large Gunbai strapped to his back 159.
- Six Paths form: Six Paths robes, a staff, and Truth-Seeking Orbs behind him 287.
- Susanoo: Deep blue; its Perfect form has armor, wings, and a longsword at its waist 216 223.
Personality
Madara combines pride with practical concern for the Uchiha. He restrains Izuna’s impulsiveness, recognizes that Sora is dangerous, and refuses a costly fight when it could compromise the clan’s defenses. His clan members initially question that decision, then accept his explanation 159 166.
His appetite for battle is particularly strong toward Hashirama and Sora. He enters the Uzumaki conflict to test Hashirama’s senjutsu and welcomes Sora fighting at full strength. When Sora’s Susanoo proves larger than his own, Madara briefly doubts himself but quickly regains his resolve 214 223 225.
New power intensifies his arrogance and ruthlessness. After receiving Izuna’s ocular chakra, he attacks the friend who saved him and tortures Mito within an illusion. Nevertheless, he can acknowledge an opponent’s superiority: as Six Paths Madara, he declares Sora the strongest Uchiha and retreats when the battle turns against him 222 288.
Abilities & Skills
Mangekyō Sharingan
Madara’s original ocular abilities are space-time clones and Tsukuyomi. His temporary Eternal Mangekyō also incorporates Izuna’s Amaterasu and Kagutsuchi 222.
- Space-time clones / Instant Clone: Instantly creates a solid clone anywhere within his line of sight. Each clone has half his strength and can launch physical surprise attacks 216.
- Tsukuyomi: Draws Mito into an illusion after brief eye contact, leaving her unconscious in the real world 222.
- Amaterasu and Kagutsuchi: Uses black flames and shape transformation, including a fire dragon and a clone-based flame trap 225 226.
- Combined attacks: Hides Kagutsuchi behind an Instant Clone feint, ensuring that black flames catch on Sora’s clothing even if he teleports away 226.
- Temporary power limit: The chakra fusion with Izuna does not last indefinitely; near defeat, Madara’s borrowed power is nearly spent and his eyesight deteriorates 227.
Tailed-Beast Control
His Sharingan can subjugate multiple tailed beasts with a glance 214.
- Controls the Nine-Tails before entering the Uzumaki battlefield, then captures six other beasts with his Mangekyō 214.
- Uses the controlled beasts to reverse the battlefield’s balance in the Ninja Clan Alliance’s favor 214.
- A Contract Seal can sever the Sharingan’s link to a beast, as Sora demonstrates on the Seven-Tails 214.
- Sora releases the remaining six beasts after Madara’s defeat 227.
Susanoo
Madara manifests a deep-blue chakra warrior for defense and large-scale combat 216.
- Defensive manifestation: Protects him from a direct Rasengan to the chest 216.
- Armored form: Develops legs, armor, four arms, and chakra longswords 217.
- Perfect form: Exceeds 100 meters in height and supports aerial combat through its wings 223 225.
- Weapons: Uses sword strikes and Yasaka Magatama 217 220.
- Limits shown: Sora punches through its armored defense and later knocks the Perfect Susanoo backward before striking it with a massive golden Rasengan 217 226.
Fire Release and Weapon Combat
Madara combines powerful elemental attacks with close-range weapon exchanges 215.
- Majestic Destroyer Flame: Produces a massive fire attack, countered by Sora’s Great Exploding Water Colliding Wave 215.
- Uchiha Reflection: Uses his Gunbai to repel Sora’s incoming Rasengan 215.
- Gunbai combat: Trades repeated midair strikes with Sora’s borrowed greatsword 215.
- Kunai attacks: Arms an ocular clone with a kunai for a sudden attack behind Sora 216.
Rinnegan and Six Paths Mode
Madara is the original owner of the Rinnegan preserved during his resurrection. Absorbing the Ten-Tails grants him Six Paths Mode 287.
- Limbo: Border Jail: Uses it against Sora, who counters the invisible barrier with Boundary of Reality and Illusion 288.
- Flight: Fights above the sea and retreats through the air 288.
- Six Paths equipment: Manifests a staff and Truth-Seeking Orbs 287.
- Immortality: Claims he is immortal after restoring both Rinnegan 290.
- Limits shown: Sora’s combined enhancements overpower him despite his strength exceeding Six Paths Obito’s 287 288.
Infinite Tsukuyomi
Madara casts Infinite Tsukuyomi and regards its completion as the realization of his dream of peace 290.
