Background / History

Original history and the Warring States counterpart

In Sora and Tsunade's original history, Hashirama founded Konoha alongside Madara Uchiha. His exceptional physique and Wood Release remain benchmarks of shinobi power, while his cells are used by later ninja to acquire extraordinary abilities 73 75.

Sora and Tsunade arrive in another world's Warring States Period, where Hashirama is still the young leader of the Senju Clan. The Senju and Uchiha are enemies, but Hashirama and Madara retain a friendship intertwined with rivalry. Tsunade joins the Senju as a medical ninja while concealing that Hashirama is her grandfather in her own world 144 166 167 202.

The Six-Tails expedition

Hashirama leads the Senju against the Hyuga Clan over possession of the Six-Tails. Although he drives the Hyuga away, their leader's Gentle Fist seals many of his chakra pressure points. His clansmen maintain a barrier around the beast while he recovers; once the barrier breaks, he restores his chakra flow and resumes the fight 167 171.

After subduing and sealing the Six-Tails, Hashirama encounters Sasuke Sarutobi, who demands the beast in exchange for allowing him to reinforce Tobirama. Unwilling to risk his brother's life, Hashirama relinquishes his prize. He acknowledges that he failed to anticipate how many other clans would covet a tailed beast 172.

Hashirama subsequently drives back the Hozuki Clan and reaches the battlefield where Sora is fighting Kaguya Yakki. He joins Tobirama and Sora against Yakki's Bone Demon Warrior, but the successive battles have depleted his reserves enough to prevent him from using stronger Wood Release techniques 176 177.

Sora's mediation and their sparring match

After the expedition, Sora asks the Senju brothers to end their war with the Uchiha. Hashirama listens to the proposal and restrains Tobirama's hostility; both brothers take Sora's proposed role as mediator seriously after witnessing his combat strength 178.

Sora then requests a sparring match to stimulate his own physique's evolution. Hashirama's Wood Release supplies the pressure that allows Sora's automatic training system to complete the Hashirama Sage Body transformation ahead of schedule. Hashirama senses their newly similar constitutions but does not learn the cause. The match ends when Sora teleports away and declines to continue 181 182 183.

The six-tailed-beast attack

Hashirama and Sora intercept six tailed beasts near the Senju compound. Hashirama initially restrains several with Wood Release, but coordinated attacks break his Wood Dragon. Since he has not yet learned senjutsu, he needs Sora to buy time while he prepares a stronger technique 184 185 189.

His Wood Human Technique overwhelms the already-exhausted beasts, allowing him to seal the Two-Tails, Four-Tails, and Five-Tails into miniature forms. When other clan leaders subsequently gang up on Sora, Hashirama abandons his earlier restraint and intervenes with Deep Forest Emergence 191 196.

The Uzumaki alliance and senjutsu training

Uzumaki envoys propose an alliance with the Senju and an engagement between Hashirama and Mito Uzumaki, whom he previously rescued during a mission. The prospect leaves him visibly embarrassed and delighted 200 201.

Seeking the strength needed to bring peace to the Land of Fire, Hashirama sets out to locate Shikkotsu Forest with Sora and the Six-Tails. He masters its senjutsu in roughly one month, develops a powerful sage art, and promises the Slug Sage that he will use his new power to protect the shinobi world 202 206.

Defense of the Uzumaki Clan

Upon returning, Hashirama learns that the Ninja Clan Alliance is attacking the Uzumaki. Sora transports him partway to the Land of Whirlpools, allowing the two to reach the battle without waiting for the Senju army 208.

Hashirama saves Mito with the Hōbi Technique, then brings the battlefield under control with Deep Forest Emergence. His smaller Wood Dragons prevent alliance ninja from blocking the Uzumaki retreat, enabling the defenders to withdraw to their clan grounds 211 212.

Madara arrives with the controlled Nine-Tails to challenge Hashirama's new senjutsu. Hashirama initially leaves Sora to fight him, but intervenes when Sora's attack threatens to kill Madara. His True Several Thousand Hands blocks the attack at the cost of almost all his remaining senjutsu chakra 214 215 220 221.

Madara refuses to stop, kicks the depleted Hashirama aside, and incapacitates Mito with genjutsu. Furious, Hashirama carries her to safety and warns Sora about Madara's new power. Nevertheless, after Sora defeats Madara, Hashirama asks to take responsibility for him, still hoping to save his life and persuade him to change 222 227.

Founding Konoha

Sora establishes Konoha as a new village centered on the Senju and Uchiha clans, fulfilling Hashirama's long-held ambition. He then leaves the village's affairs to Hashirama 228.

Hashirama brings Madara back to the Senju compound, where they talk through the night. Madara subsequently announces the clans' merger, and other major Land of Fire clans join. Hashirama uses Wood Release to construct homes as the village takes shape in little more than ten days 230.

The Senju brothers want Sora to become Konoha's Kage, but he leaves with Tsunade. His farewell letter instead asks Hashirama to take the position 230.

Appearance

Hashirama has long black hair and a resolute face 171 176.

  • Youthful age: He is only in his twenties when Tsunade accidentally calls him “Grandfather” 202.
  • Sage markings: Blue-black markings appear on his face when he uses Sage Mode 220.
  • Casual clothing: He receives Sora in casual clothes at the Senju residence 178.

Personality

Hashirama is warm and hospitable, welcoming Sora with tea and later inviting him to drink. He is not belligerent by nature: when Sora ends their sparring match, he accepts the decision rather than pursuing another exchange 178 183 201.

His loyalty frequently outweighs strategic advantage. He surrenders the Six-Tails to protect Tobirama and saves Madara despite their clans' enmity. Madara's attack on Mito finally provokes genuine fury, though Hashirama later still seeks custody of his defeated friend 172 221 222 227.

Hashirama wants peace but recognizes the difficulty of achieving it. He also admits mistakes, including his failure to anticipate rival clans' interference during the Six-Tails expedition. Around Mito, his commanding manner gives way to blushing, sheepish laughter, and distracted excitement 172 201 202.

Abilities & Skills

Hashirama Sage Body

Hashirama's unique constitution combines immense vitality, recovery power, chakra reserves, and Wood Release. It is distinguished from both an ordinary sage body and the senjutsu-based Sage Mode he learns later 73 183 206.

  • Chakra reserves: Far exceed those of an ordinary tailed beast. After fully adapting to an equivalent physique, Sora reaches at least Nine-Tails-level reserves and is described as roughly equal to Hashirama 182 206.
  • Recovery: His constitution possesses exceptional self-healing and vitality 183.
  • Limits: Gentle Fist can seal his chakra pressure points, and repeated major battles can exhaust his reserves despite their size 171 177 222.
  • Cell transplantation: The narrative credits transplanted Hashirama flesh with helping Madara awaken the Rinnegan, and an inferior Hashirama-cell-based White Zetsu body with allowing Obito to use his Mangekyō without its usual burden 73.
  • Cell instability: Danzo's implanted cells run out of control and transform his arm into a tree, forcing him to tear it off 73.

Wood Release

Hashirama's signature kekkei genkai creates and controls enormous wooden constructs. His mastery allows him to restrain tailed beasts, absorb opponents' chakra, control battlefields, and construct buildings 189 211 230.

  • Deep Forest Emergence: Produces a rapidly expanding mass of trees, roots, and vines. It can surround targets from every direction and absorb the chakra of captured ninja 171 182 211.
  • Wood Dragon Technique: Creates a dragon approximately one hundred meters long that binds targets and drains chakra. It can catch and redirect Tailed Beast Bombs, and regenerate damage from an ordinary Rasenshuriken 171 182 189.
  • Hotei Technique: Raises enormous wooden hands to seize opponents' limbs or combine with the Wood Dragon to close escape routes 177 183.
  • Hōbi Technique: Forms a demon-faced wooden shield. It protects Hashirama from a Five-Tails tail strike and later shields Mito from the Akimichi clan head 185 211.
  • Wood Human Technique: Produces a hundred-meter wooden giant capable of overpowering multiple weakened tailed beasts in close combat 191.
  • Construction: Creates homes during Konoha's founding 230.
  • Limits: Kaguya Yakki's Bone Demon Warrior breaks his Wood Dragon, while the coordinated attacks of several tailed beasts also tear one apart 177 189.

Tailed-Beast Suppression

Hashirama's Wood Release chakra inherently suppresses tailed beasts, rather than relying solely on conventional sealing jutsu 191 229.

  • Seals beasts into miniature forms by pressing his marked palm against their heads 191.
  • Suppresses their chakra and leaves a sealing character on their foreheads 191.
  • His seals can normally be undone only by him, unless a stronger chakra force breaks through them 191.

Shikkotsu Forest Sage Mode

After training in Shikkotsu Forest, Hashirama gains senjutsu and powerful sensory perception 206 208.

  • Long-range sensing: Detects the alliance's attack on the Uzumaki territory from the Senju compound 208.
  • True Several Thousand Hands: Creates a wooden Buddha hundreds of meters tall whose enormous hands deliver a sustained barrage. Hashirama uses it to counter Sora's Super Great Ball Rasenshuriken and save Madara 220.
  • Energy cost: That clash consumes almost all his senjutsu chakra, leaving him unable to use senjutsu against Madara afterward 221 222.

Fivefold Rashomon

Hashirama summons five demonic-faced iron gates as successive defensive barriers 171.

  • Stops a Six-Tails Tailed Beast Bomb by exhausting its energy across the gates; the first four break, while the fifth withstands the weakened remainder 171.
  • Uses the same technique against a Tailed Beast Bomb fired by the Nine-Tails 214.

Swordsmanship

Hashirama opens his sparring match with Sora using a heavy Greatsword summoned from a scroll 181.

  • Later lends the weapon to Sora for his fight against Madara 215.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Greatsword — A visibly heavy weapon stored in a summoning scroll; used in sparring and later lent to Sora 181 215.
  • Flying Thunder God Kunai — Carries a marked kunai that lets Sora teleport to him in Shikkotsu Forest 206.
  • Crystallized chakra necklace — An item Hashirama left behind in the original history; its chakra can suppress tailed beasts 229.

Relationships

  • Tobirama Senju — Younger brother and close battlefield partner. Hashirama prioritizes his safety over retaining the Six-Tails and relies on him to manage clan affairs 172 177 201.
  • Madara Uchiha — Friend, rival, and leader of the enemy Uchiha Clan. Their shared dream survives repeated conflict; Hashirama saves his life and later talks with him before the clans unite 166 221 227 230.
  • Mito Uzumaki — Woman he rescued and proposed fiancée through the Senju–Uzumaki alliance. He is openly affectionate toward her and becomes furious when Madara harms her 200 201 211 222.
  • Uchiha Sora — Trusted ally, sparring partner, and fellow senjutsu trainee. Hashirama acknowledges that Sora's strongest mode surpasses his own full strength; Sora entrusts him with Konoha's leadership 181 206 218 228 230.
  • Tsunade — His granddaughter in her original world, but a respected medical ninja and apparent peer in the visited Warring States world. Her accidental use of “Grandfather” leaves him bewildered 167 202.
  • Slug Sage — Senjutsu mentor at Shikkotsu Forest. Hashirama promises to use her teachings to protect the shinobi world 206.
  • Sasuke Sarutobi — Rival clan leader who exploits Tobirama's danger to obtain the Six-Tails; later joins Konoha with the Sarutobi Clan 172 230.
