Background / History

Attempt to recruit Sora

After Sora defeats Itachi in the Chunin Exam finals, Danzo approaches Hiruzen and insists on handling the young Uchiha’s recruitment. Hiruzen refuses to yield, then orders Kakashi to monitor Danzo and protect Sora from his interference. Sora’s subsequent ANBU recruitment places him under the Hokage’s authority instead 16 17.

Fugaku nevertheless considers Root a route to political influence for the Uchiha and arranges for Itachi to enter the organization. Danzo allows Itachi considerable freedom while repeatedly instilling the belief that protecting Konoha must come first 16 22 29.

Root headquarters raid

Following Shisui’s death, Sora attacks Root’s underground headquarters. Danzo destroys many of Sora’s Shadow Clones with Wind Release, but discovers that Sora has placed Flying Thunder God markers throughout the base 27 28.

Danzo attempts to control Sora with Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami. When the technique fails, Yamanaka Fū saves him from a lethal lightning attack by controlling another Root operative and forcing that man to intercept it. Danzo incorrectly concludes that Sora’s resistance comes from possessing Shisui’s other eye 28.

Unable to secure a victory, Danzo offers to support Sora as Hokage and proposes that they take control of the Land of Fire together. Sora rejects the offer and leaves; meanwhile, his clones steal Root’s extensive collection of classified technique records 28.

Danzo then proposes abducting Izumi and Hazuki as leverage, but his agents discover that Sora has already moved them away. He and Hiruzen turn to Itachi instead, and Danzo orders him to assassinate Sora 29.

Campaign against Kusagakure

As Sora builds his own faction, Danzo secretly orders Root to sell detailed intelligence on him to the Raikage, intending to draw the Land of Lightning into conflict with him. Danzo later sends Fū to capture Samui; Sora kills and reanimates Fū, turning Danzo’s operative into his own subordinate 55 59 71.

Uchiha extermination plot

When Itachi reports Sora’s proposal to relocate the Uchiha clan, Danzo orders him to lead Root in exterminating the clan the following night. Danzo reveals that he has already used Kotoamatsukami to implant the command “loyal to Konoha” in Itachi, altering his priorities without completely replacing his will 68.

Sora’s intervention prevents the clan’s total destruction. Root is nearly wiped out in the counterattack, although close to a thousand Uchiha—mostly civilians—have already died. Danzo exploits the chaos to steal Sharingan and flees toward Ancient Kikyo Castle 69 70 71.

Final duel and death

While fleeing, Danzo implants ten stolen Sharingan into his modified arm. Sora tracks him using the reanimated Fū’s sensory abilities. Danzo relies on Wind Release, deceptive attacks, and Izanagi to survive the duel, but Sora’s Susanoo and Flying Thunder God repeatedly deny him a decisive opening 71 72.

After exhausting the arm’s eyes, Danzo suffers a severe wound and loses control of its Hashirama cells. The arm transforms into a tree, forcing him to tear it off. He then activates the Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Technique to prevent Sora from obtaining Shisui’s eye 73.
