Konoha Career and Defection

Orochimaru survived both the Second and Third Shinobi World Wars, accumulating the combat experience that distinguishes him from younger ninja. By his first encounter with Sora’s ANBU team, he had defected from Konoha roughly one or two years earlier 19.

He resents Konoha’s rejection of his human experiments, considering their sacrifices justified by the research they enabled. Mikoto identifies his defection as one of the losses that weakened the village after the Nine-Tails incident 11 38.

Encounter with Sora’s ANBU Team

Orochimaru intercepts Kakashi, Sora, Yugao, and Eagle after their rescue mission near the Land of Fire border. He recognizes Sora despite his ANBU mask and isolates him by ordering three giant snakes to occupy his teammates 18 19.

His flexible body and veteran reflexes defeat Sora’s initial counterattack, including a point-blank Rasengan. However, the battle triggers Sora’s automatic mental-energy training, strengthening his chakra and Sharingan enough to immobilize Orochimaru with genjutsu 19.

After Sasuke disappears from Kusagakure, Sora and Fugaku identify evidence of Orochimaru’s Face Copying Technique. Fugaku sets out to track him, while Sora instructs him to deliver an invitation to settle in Kusagakure 76.

By Sora’s later visit, Orochimaru has left Akatsuki and founded Otogakure in the Land of Rice Fields. He secretly develops its forces, recruits people with unusual abilities, and conducts experiments in an underground laboratory. Sasuke is training under him and has received a Cursed Seal 126 128 135.

Sora demands his Cursed Seal research and demonstrates Perfect Sage Mode. Confronted with both Sora’s strength and a shared interest in understanding power, Orochimaru provides the research scroll and known White Zetsu hideout locations 127 128.

Sasori’s Attack and Continued Cooperation

When Sasori infiltrates the laboratory to kill him and seize his research, Orochimaru destroys several attacking puppets with Hidden Shadow Snake Hands. He attempts to stop Sasori’s retreat, then follows Sora into the forest to witness their battle 129 130 131.

Orochimaru interprets Sora’s techniques for Sasuke, explaining Sage Mode, the Mangekyō Sharingan, and the scale of Sora’s Rasenshuriken. He welcomes Sasori’s defeat and privately hopes that seeing Sora’s power will make Sasuke more receptive to the Cursed Seal 131 134 135.
