Background / History
Laozi is one of the Three Pure Ones and is regarded as Tongtian’s eldest brother despite Tongtian taking form first. He and Yuanshi transform on Kunlun Mountain together, overcome the Transformation Tribulation through Taiqing and Yuqing Celestial Light, and agree with Tongtian that the three brothers should support one another in the Primordial World 3.
Before Laozi can claim it, Tongtian takes the Heavenly Yellow Linglong Pagoda, a treasure Laozi regards as his original opportunity. Although Laozi accepts the loss because Tongtian is his brother, he feels that an important opportunity has slipped away 2 3. He later receives the Coiled Dragon Cane when the ruined 24th Grade Creation Green Lotus produces one treasure for each of the Three Pure Ones 29.
Laozi accepts Hongjun as his master and remains on Kunlun Mountain to cultivate while Tongtian accompanies Hongjun during the Dao-Demon War 31 32. He insists on joining the campaign against Rahou with Yuanshi, but their insufficient strength leaves them reliant on Tongtian’s protection; Tongtian ultimately confines them in the Heavenly Yellow Linglong Pagoda during the battle 40 42 45.

Personality
Laozi initially values the unity of the Three Pure Ones and urges continued cultivation rather than reckless travel. He is concerned for Tongtian’s safety after Tongtian chooses to leave Kunlun Mountain, though he also regrets losing the pagoda opportunity to him 3.
Tongtian’s repeated advances, greater fortune, and influence gradually foster Laozi’s envy and resentment. He seeks to restore his standing through cultivation, discipleship under Hongjun, and the establishment of the Human Sect 45 46 51 78.
He is calculating in pursuing his opportunity for sainthood. He secretly promotes the Golden Core Path among the Human Race and argues that Tongtian’s Shangqing cultivation method is inferior, provoking Tongtian into destroying his Good Corpse 83 84. After attaining sainthood, he continues to compete with Tongtian for the Human Race’s destiny and influence 85 108 110.

Tongtian takes form before Laozi and claims the Heavenly Yellow Linglong Pagoda with Heaven-Opening Merit. Laozi recognizes that the treasure has fallen to his brother but feels that he has lost a major opportunity 2 3.
Hongjun’s Disciple and the Dao-Demon War
Laozi becomes Hongjun’s disciple and later insists on fighting Rahou beside Tongtian and Yuanshi. He is overwhelmed by the Demon Clan’s forces and must be saved by Tongtian, receiving none of the battle’s treasures or merit afterward 31 40 42 45.
Separation of the Three Pure Ones
As Tongtian’s reputation, cultivation, disciples, and allies grow, Laozi and Yuanshi choose to split from him. The separation becomes widely interpreted as an act driven by their jealousy of Tongtian’s gains 69 70.
Conflict over the Human Race
Laozi identifies the Human Race as his path to sainthood and sends his Good Corpse to recruit Xuandu and promote the Golden Core Path. Tongtian destroys the Good Corpse for denigrating the Shangqing method, then seizes the Coiled Dragon Cane 83 84.
Founding of the Human Sect
Laozi re-establishes his Good Corpse, preaches the Golden Core Path to human cultivators, and receives vast Heavenly Dao Merit. He founds the Human Sect and becomes a Heavenly Dao Saint 85.
